REMOTE CONTROLS

Usage Questions

Product: Remote Control Operation
Question: Why won't a Universal Remote control all my devices?
Answer: The "Universal" in "Universal Remotes" refers to the remote controls ability to control a wide range of device types and models; however, there are two types of remotes. In order to understand the differences, we need to cover the basic operation of remotes in general.

When a device is designed to be used with a remote control, the designers select a system and a control scheme. The system most commonly used is IR (infrared), but ultrasonic and RF (radio frequency) remote systems also exist. The scheme is the correlation of signals to operation (such as three short, quick bursts for POWER ON).

The designers can either create a new control scheme or use an existing scheme. Most manufacturers reuse schemes within their product lines simply because it is cost-efficient.

Programmable remotes are preset with codes which represent the schemes most commonly used by the manufacturers, and include a code book which lists these codes. The actual codes can vary between remotes; programmable remotes can have 2, 3, 4 or 5-digit codes (or more), and the numbers used in the codes can be 0-9, 0-1 or anything in between -- the actual number and format depends on the manufacturer.

For this reason, different remotes can vary in the codes they use and the devices they control, and programmable remotes are limited by their programming to those devices which use a control scheme in their memory. Because of this, they cannot be completely universal; new control schemes are created regularly.

Learning remotes often contain codes just like the programmable remotes, but they also have a very special feature -- the ability to "learn" the control scheme from an existing remote. This is usually done by putting the learning remote in the proper mode, putting the two remotes "eye-to-eye" (with their IR lights pointing at each other), and pushing the button(s) on the original remote to send the proper sequence to be learned. The actual steps vary from remote to remote. These remotes are more universal than a strictly programmable remote; however, even these remotes are limited to controlling devices using the same system (IR, RF or ultrasonic).

The 15-2103 5-in-1 Remote and 15-2104 6-in-1 Remote have buttons which can be "learned" from an existing remote.

Question: How do I use this remote with my Plug 'n Power or X-10 controller?
Answer: Standard remotes operates on infrared, and the Plug 'n Power modules respond to radio signals across the AC lines. In order to operate Plug 'n Power or X-10 modules via these remote controls, you must have both a remote which has a Plug 'n Power button and a special interface unit (available as part number 980-0214 or RSU number 10037703). The remote sends an IR (infrared) command to the 980-0214 interface unit, which sends the RF (radio frequency) command to the Plug 'n Power or X-10 modules across the AC lines.

These types of remotes cannot be set for different house or unit codes. You can use the Bright and Dim functions of your modules using the Vol+ and Vol- buttons.

Question: Does RadioShack have any remotes that will work with X10/Plug 'n' Power controllers with unit codes above 09?
Answer: We do not have a remote which will handle a Plug 'n Power code above 09. The Plug-n-Power key on the remote is programmed like the other device keys, and it is preprogrammed for the most common code - 167 (X10). The house codes for the individual devices are set on the special interface unit (available as Catalog Number 980-0214 or RSU number 10037703). The remote controls will operate the devices by selecting the number programmed on the unit and pressing the appropriate numeral for the device on the remote (00 through 09). This works because the controller interface numbers the first ten modules 00-09. The next ten modules are numbered A0-A9, however, and there is no way on our remote controls to send an "A"; there is not a shift or function key which will do this. Because of this, the RadioShack remotes with Plug 'n Power capabilities will only control the first ten devices.

Question: How do I program this remote control?
Answer: This remote does not program using codes; it is programmed using the original remote(s) as follows:

TEACHING THE URC

ALIGNING THE URC AND A REMOTE CONTROL

  1. You must properly align the URC's infrared (IR) receiver window (located on the bottom end) with the remote control whose commands you want to teach to the URC. Do this with each remote control before you teach its commands to the URC.
  2. NOTE: Be sure that the remote control's batteries are not weak.

  3. Press [LEARN]. SELECT and KEY alternately appear on the display.
  4. Position the remote control and URC on a flat surface so that the remote control's IR window and the URC's IR receiver window face each other about 1 inch apart.
  5. Repeatedly press any key on the remote control and slowly move the control from side to side until the URC's IR indicator lights.
  6. When the alignment is correct, proceed to "Teaching Commands to the URC".

TEACHING COMMANDS TO THE URC

  1. Follow these steps to teach commands to your URC.
  2. Press [LEARN]. SELECT and KEY alternately appear on the display.
  3. Press SELECT [<] or [>] to select the device you want to control (TV, CABLE, VCR and so on).
  4. Press the URC command key you want to teach -- [ON], for example. The key name and IR appear on the display.
  5. Press and hold down the remote control key you want the URC to learn. The IR indicator lights.
  6. Release the remote control key when STORED appears on the display. SELECT and KEY alternately appear on the display.
    • NOTES:
If ERROR appears on the display, see "Troubleshooting".
If the URC has trouble learning a particular key, re-teach that key or see "Alternate Teaching Methods".
If the URC displays STORED after you teach a command key but will not operate the device controlled by that key, see "Alternate Teaching Methods".

  7. Repeat Steps 3-5 to teach the URC more commands from the same remote control. See "Aligning the URC and a Remote Control" before you teach the URC commands from a different remote control.
  8. To exit the learn mode, press [CANCEL]. (The URC automatically exits the learn mode if you don't press any key for 60 seconds.)
    • NOTES:
To change the command learned by a command key, simply repeat the teaching procedure. The URC replaces the old command with the new one.
If FULL appears on the display, the URC's memory is full. Delete some commands before you store new commands. See "Deleting a Command or a Command Sequence."
After you teach the URC, remove the batteries from the old remote controls and store the remote controls in case you need to re-teach the URC.

Additional information is available in the on-line manual.

Question: How do I program this remote?
Answer: Follow these steps to set up your 4-in-1.
  1. Remove the battery compartment cover and install four fresh AAA alkaline batteries (RadioShack Cat. No. 23-555).  Observe the polarity (+ and -) marked in the compartment.
  2. Refer to Manufacturers' Codes and write down the codes for your original remote controls on the provided label that fits on the back of the 4-in-1.  For example, a code for an RCA remote control TV is 047.
  3. Press the key for the device you want to set up: TV, CABLE, VCR, or AUX.  Press A  B  C, and enter the 3-digit code for the device.  For example, to set up the 4-in-1 for an RCA TV with a code of 047, press the following keys:
    TV  A  B  C  0  4  7
The red IR indicator at the top of the 4-in-1 flashes each time you press a key.  It also flashes twice when you enter a code that it recognizes.  (This does not mean that it is the right code for your device, however.)
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to setup other devices.

Notes:

Do not place objects on top of the remote control after you install the batteries.   This can press down keys for an extended period and reduce battery life.

Some remote controls have several possible codes listed.  Try each code until you find the correct one.  If you cannot get the remote to accept any code, see If You Have Problems for troubleshooting tips.

Question: How do I program this remote without a code?
Answer:

To program this remote without a code:

  1. Manually turn on the device you are trying to set up.
  2. Aim the 4-in-1 at the device.
  3. Press the following keys:
    A  B  (Device Key)  Power
  4. Repeatedly press C POWER until the device responds to the 4-in-1. Each time you press C POWER, the 4-in-1 advances to the next manufacturer's code in its library and sends the remote control code for POWER.
  5. When the device responds to the 4-in-1, press A to lock in the current manufacturer's code.

Notes:

You can repeat this procedure for each device key.

The device keys are TV, CABLE, VCR, and AUX.

If the original remote control does not have a POWER key, use any other common key on the original remote control instead of the POWER key.

Because of the huge number of codes in the 4-in-1, this procedure can take several minutes for each device.

When you reach the end of the library, the red indicator blinks three times.   However, you might begin searching in the middle of the library, so you must wait for the three blinks to occur a second time before you can be sure you have tried all the codes.

Question: How do I program this remote without a code? How do I determine what code is used?
Answer: If your home entertainment device does not respond to remote control commands after trying all of the codes listed for your brand, or if your brand is not listed, try searching for your code. Follow these steps to search for codes manually.
  1. Turn on the desired device.
  2. On the 5-In-One Remote, press the appropriate device key once.
  3. Hold down P until the red light blinks twice.
  4. Press 9 9 1. The red light blinks twice.
  5. Aim the 5-In-One Remote at the desired device and slowly alternate between pressing POWER and the appropriate device key. Stop when the device turns off - a code that works has been found.
Note: In the search mode, the remote sends IR codes from its extensive library to the selected device, starting with the most popular codes. Because of the library’s size, this procedure may take some time. When the red light blinks three times, the search of every code is complete.
  6. Press P once to lock in the code.

Note: If the device turns off during the search, but does not operate after you lock in the code, begin the search again, pausing longer between key presses.

Checking Your Code

Question: Programming via Code How do I program this remote?
Answer: To control devices other than the default brands (for example, an RCA TV, VCR, and cable converter or SAT/DSS receiver, a Pioneer DVD player, CD player, and auxiliary device), perform the following steps. If you use the default brand devices, you do not need to program the remote.
  1. Refer to the code lists and write down the code(s) for the brand of each device you want to program on the supplied label.
Note: Some manufacturers may have several codes listed. Try each until you find the right one. If you cannot find the correct code, see "Programming without a Code".
  2. Turn on all your home entertainment devices.
  3. On the remote control, press the desired device key (TV, VCR, CBL/SAT, DVD, CD or AUX).
Note: For TV/VCR combinations, press VCR and use the VCR code listed for your model under "TV/VCR Combo Codes". If your TV/VCR combination also lists a TV code, you must program the TV separately by repeating Steps 3–5 to add volume control. In Step 3, press TV, then in step 4 enter the TV code.
  4. Hold down P until the remote’s red light blinks twice, then enter the first 4-digit manufacturer’s code for the desired device. When the red light blinks twice, the remote control has accepted the code. For example, to set up the remote control of a Panasonic TV (manufacturer’s code 0051), press TV, hold down P until the red light blinks twice, then press 0 0 5 1.
Note: If you entered the code incorrectly, the red light emits one long blink.
  5. Point the remote control at the desired device and press POWER. The device should turn off. If the remote control does not operate your device, try the other codes listed for your brand of device. Otherwise, use the search method to find a working Code.
  6. Repeat Steps 2–5 to program other devices.
Note: If the remote control does not operate all device functions, try using another code in the list that may be more compatible

Question: How do I program this remote without a code?
Answer: If your home entertainment device does not respond to remote control commands after trying all of the codes listed for your brand, or if your brand is not listed, try searching for your code.

Follow these steps to search for codes manually.

  1. Turn on the desired device.
  2. On the 6-In-One Remote, press the appropriate device key once.
  3. Hold down P until the red light blinks twice.
  4. Press 9 9 1. The red light blinks twice.
  5. Aim the 6-In-One Remote at the desired device and slowly alternate between pressing POWER and the appropriate device key. Stop when the device turns off — a working code has been found.
