| Question: Why won't a Universal Remote control all my devices? |
| Answer: The
"Universal" in "Universal Remotes" refers to the remote controls
ability to control a wide range of device types and models; however, there are two types
of remotes. In order to understand the differences, we need to cover the basic operation
of remotes in general. When a device is designed to be used with a remote control, the designers select a system and a control scheme. The system most commonly used is IR (infrared), but ultrasonic and RF (radio frequency) remote systems also exist. The scheme is the correlation of signals to operation (such as three short, quick bursts for POWER ON). The designers can either create a new control scheme or use an existing scheme. Most manufacturers reuse schemes within their product lines simply because it is cost-efficient. Programmable remotes are preset with codes which represent the schemes most commonly used by the manufacturers, and include a code book which lists these codes. The actual codes can vary between remotes; programmable remotes can have 2, 3, 4 or 5-digit codes (or more), and the numbers used in the codes can be 0-9, 0-1 or anything in between -- the actual number and format depends on the manufacturer. For this reason, different remotes can vary in the codes they use and the devices they control, and programmable remotes are limited by their programming to those devices which use a control scheme in their memory. Because of this, they cannot be completely universal; new control schemes are created regularly. Learning remotes often contain codes just like the programmable remotes, but they also have a very special feature -- the ability to "learn" the control scheme from an existing remote. This is usually done by putting the learning remote in the proper mode, putting the two remotes "eye-to-eye" (with their IR lights pointing at each other), and pushing the button(s) on the original remote to send the proper sequence to be learned. The actual steps vary from remote to remote. These remotes are more universal than a strictly programmable remote; however, even these remotes are limited to controlling devices using the same system (IR, RF or ultrasonic). The 15-2103 5-in-1 Remote and 15-2104 6-in-1 Remote have buttons which can be "learned" from an existing remote. |

| Question: How do I use this remote with my Plug 'n Power or X-10 controller? |
| Answer: Standard remotes
operates on infrared, and the Plug 'n Power modules respond to radio signals across the AC
lines. In order to operate Plug 'n Power or X-10 modules via these remote controls, you
must have both a remote which has a Plug 'n Power button and a
special interface unit (available as part number 980-0214 or RSU number 10037703). The remote sends an IR (infrared) command to the
980-0214 interface unit, which sends the RF (radio frequency) command to the Plug 'n Power
or X-10 modules across the AC lines. These types of remotes cannot be set for different house or unit codes. You can use the Bright and Dim functions of your modules using the Vol+ and Vol- buttons. |

| Question: Does RadioShack have any remotes that will work with X10/Plug 'n' Power controllers with unit codes above 09? |
| Answer: We do not have a remote which will handle a Plug 'n Power code above 09. The Plug-n-Power key on the remote is programmed like the other device keys, and it is preprogrammed for the most common code - 167 (X10). The house codes for the individual devices are set on the special interface unit (available as Catalog Number 980-0214 or RSU number 10037703). The remote controls will operate the devices by selecting the number programmed on the unit and pressing the appropriate numeral for the device on the remote (00 through 09). This works because the controller interface numbers the first ten modules 00-09. The next ten modules are numbered A0-A9, however, and there is no way on our remote controls to send an "A"; there is not a shift or function key which will do this. Because of this, the RadioShack remotes with Plug 'n Power capabilities will only control the first ten devices. |

Answer: Follow
these steps to set up your 4-in-1.
Notes: Do not place objects on top of the remote control after you install the batteries. This can press down keys for an extended period and reduce battery life. Some remote controls have several possible codes listed. Try each code until you find the correct one. If you cannot get the remote to accept any code, see If You Have Problems for troubleshooting tips. |

| Question: How do I program this remote without a code? | |
| Answer: To program this remote without a code:
Notes: You can repeat this procedure for each device key. The device keys are TV, CABLE, VCR, and AUX. If the original remote control does not have a POWER key, use any other common key on the original remote control instead of the POWER key. Because of the huge number of codes in the 4-in-1, this procedure can take several minutes for each device. When you reach the end of the library, the red indicator blinks three times. However, you might begin searching in the middle of the library, so you must wait for the three blinks to occur a second time before you can be sure you have tried all the codes. |
