Product: Amplified Antennas
Question: What amplified antenna do you suggest for my location?
Answer: Without actual testing, it is impossible to be certain how a particular amplified antenna will operate in a particular environment. We can only recommend purchasing the unit which most closely matches your needs and testing it for suitability. Please note, RadioShack makes no warranty, express or implied, of fitness for a particular purpose with regard to the product; however, RadioShack products have a 30-day no-questions money-back warranty in part to ensure that your purchase is what you really need. If the product does not perform as anticipated, it can be returned within 30 days of purchase with the packaging and receipt to any RadioShack for a complete refund.
We offer a number of indoor TV antennas. They vary in what they receive (VHF, UHF, FM), how they connect to the TV, whether they are amplified and the level of amplification. The chart below shows this information:

Cat. No.

Amplified antennas will bring in signals from further away; the greater the amplification, the better the signal. A 75 Ohm connection is the single coaxial cable, such as used by the cable company. A 300 Ohm connection has separate "u" shaped connectors to be attached to screw terminals on the back of the television.

Product: Antenna Color Ratings
Question: How do I determine the color rating of antenna that I need? What do the color ratings mean?
Answer: Color ratings are through CEA and indicate the reception capability of the antenna. The CEA AntennaWeb TV Antenna Selector program is available on-line at http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.asp. By clicking on the "Choose an Antenna" link on the left side of the page and following the prompts, you can determine which color rating of antenna he or she needs. Product: Antenna Troubleshooting
Question: I replaced my antenna and now I don't get the stations as well; what could be the problem?
Answer: If you replaced the antenna with a more-powerful antenna or added an amplifier:
  • You may be using too-powerful of an antenna.
  • To determine the antenna range you actually require, we recommend that you consult AntennaWeb, the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association) website.
  • If the antenna range is significantly larger than the distance to your stations, you would need to either replace the new antenna with a less-powerful antenna or use a Signal Attenuator (Cat. No. 15-678).

If you replaced the antenna with the same or a comparably-powered antenna:

  • Check all connections.
  • Be sure you have connected any power adapters required in the installation instructions.

General Questions

Product: Connections
Question: How do I connect Picture-in-Picture?
Answer: Here are general hookup instructions, which should work for most televisions with this feature; however, you must know how to select and connect the (2) Inputs. This information will be in the television's user's manual.
  1. In order to use the PiP feature you need two INPUTS. One method uses both the RCA inputs and the Coax/75 ohms cable input.
  2. After you have both inputs connected, turn on the TV and press the PiP button.
  3. When you get the picture from the coaxial (75 ohm) connection, press the SWAP button.
  4. Then, swap the picture to the other input. You may have to press the WHO/INPUT button to get the other Picture on the TV screen.
  5. You should get the picture from the RCA connection as you press the LINE/INPUT button, with the picture from the coaxial connection.

HDTV Questions

Product: HDTV
Question: What is HDTV?
Answer: HDTV (High-definition Digital Television) is one of three standards which make up digital television or DTV. The three standards are HDTV 1080, HDTV 720 and SDTV.

HDTV 1080 (1080 lines of resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)
HDTV 720 (720 lines of resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio)
SDTV (480 lines of resolution, 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio)

HDTV is an improvement over SDTV (Standard-definition Digital Television) in that it has a higher resolution picture and a wider aspect ratio (screen width vs. screen height).   Additionally, the digital nature of this format means that if you can receive the signal, there should not be "snow" or other interference issues such as are experienced with analog signals.

Product: HDTV
Question: What do pixels have to do with HDTV?
Answer: Today's broadcast signal lights up about 200,000 pixels arranged in a 4:3 rectangle.  High-definition digital television is different. At the very minimum, over-the-air digital television offers a picture that's 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high -- that's over 300,000 pixels (about 50% more than today's TV).

Since more pixels mean more visual information, an increase in pixels means a sharper picture.  In the past, a sharper picture was just ... sharper.  But with digital television, there's a way to quantify just how sharp it is.

From the minimum of 300,000 pixels all the way up to about a million pixels is called Standard-definition Digital Television (SDTV).  High-definition Digital Television (HDTV) starts at around a million pixels and can go all the way up to 2 million -- almost ten times the resolution of today's TV.

Product: HDTV
Question: What do I need to receive HDTV signals?
Answer: In order to receive HDTV signals, you would need an HDTV source (such as RCA's 18x24" Elliptical Satellite Dish (Cat. No. 160-2604) and either an HDTV-ready Television (or Monitor) or a standard television and a high-definition receiver to convert the HDTV signal into standard NTSC.

Product: HDTV
Question: Does RadioShack sell HDTV-ready televisions or monitors? Why not?

Answer: We do not sell an HDTV-ready television or monitor at this time, due to the currently narrow market and high price for these items.  We anticipate that as the market for HDTV matures, we will be carrying these in the future. We do not have a timetable for this availability, however.

Product: LCD Televisions
Question: How do I connect my LCD television to an external A/V source?

Answer: You will need to use a Y-adapter cable with a 1/8" stereo plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other end, such as the 420-2550 3' Cable or the 420-2551 6' Cable. Connect the cable's red plug to the component's video output jack and its white plug to the component's audio output jack. Then, plug the cable's mini plug into the TV's AUDIO/VIDEO jack.

Product: F23685 RCA 32" Color Stereo Monitor Cat. No.: 160-3401
Question: The screen is yellow and displays "dealer do not remove pin for demo"..... "consumer remove pin for demo to go away" How do I fix this?
Answer: You will need to turn the TV off, unplug it and remove the pin from the back of the TV. It is inserted in the "g-link cable slot" on the back of the unit and looks like a nail but with a flat head. Once that is done wait a few seconds and then plug the TV back in and turn on.

If there is no pin on the back, then you will need to unplug the TV for a few minutes and then plug it back in.

If you still get a demo running , go to the menu screen and go to guide setup to turn the demo off.

Product: F23685 RCA 32" Color Stereo Monitor Cat. No.: 160-3401
Question: Does this have Picture-in-Picture? The specification sheet refers to "Twin Tuner"; however, page 48 of the manual says that says "Your monitor is equipped with a single tuner that tunes to cable or off-air television signals. The PIP feature on your monitor requires a second video source, like a VCR or satellite receiver to supply the second picture to the screen. The PIP feature also requires connecting the second video source to the monitor with audio/video cables." This seems to imply a single tuner, and uses A/V inputs for the second source.
Answer: The F32685 does have Twin Tuner PIP, which is available without hooking up an additional video source.

General Questions

Product: Audio/Video Distribution
Question: I added a splitter to send the signal to multiple televisions; I was getting a good display, but now I don't; what did I do wrong?
Answer: Are you using a Passive Splitter or a Distribution Amplifier (click on the term to see definitions)?
  • If you used a Passive Splitter, you probably need to either replace it with a Distribution Amplifier or add a Signal Amplifier.
  • If you used a 75-ohm Distribution Amplifier, you may have unterminated outputs.  Any output not connected to a video device should be terminated using a Terminating Resistor (Cat. No. 15-1144).

Product: UHF/Satellite Coaxial Antenna Amplifier Cat. No.: 150-1115 / 150-1115A / 150-1115B
Question: Can all versions of this unit be used with a combo antenna?
Answer: Yes. The documentation for the original version (150-1115) and the "A" version (150-1115A) indicate that they can be used with a combo antenna. The "B" version manual (150-1115B) says that it is not for use with a combo antenna; this is incorrect. The 150-1115 passes VHF-FM at an unamplified level. The unit was re-imaged several years ago and the statement not to use with UHF/VHF/FM combo antennas was added at that time. This is a minor error and the proper use should have been better qualified. With many combination antennas, the UHF needs the gain and the VHF/FM would be just fine. The use in some areas of a broadband amplifier could cause tuner overload.
