Model 36 (160-0706) Recording Faxback Doc. # 6530

There are four ways to record using your VCR-immediate recording, quick
timer recording, and dubbing.

The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection
tab in place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects if
you try to record on it.

The remote control has two REC buttons. You must press both buttons to
begin manual recording using the remote control. This safety feature
helps prevent accidental erasure of a tape.

Notes: The VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level.

The system selection is NOT automatic in the recording mode. Be
sure that the NTSC3.58 indicator on the VCR front panel is lit.
. If not, press SYSTEM before you start recording so the NTSC3.58
        indicator lights.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. High-grade tape has a better coating that helps
prevent dirty video heads and gives the best results.

This chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length tapes.
The Model 36 records only in SP speed.

Cassette Used Recording Time

T-60 1 hour

T-120 2 hours

T-160 2 2/3 hours

For PAL or SECAM tapes:

E-120 2 hours

E-150 2 1/2 hours

E-180 3 hours

E-240 4 hours

ERASE-PROTECTION TAB

Video cassettes have an erase-protection tab to prevent accidental erasure
of a tape. To prevent recording, break off the tab using a screwdriver.
If the tab is removed, the VCR cannot record on the tape. The cassette
automatically ejects with three beeps if you try to record on the tape.

If you want to record on a video cassette that does not have the tab, put
a piece of heavy plastic tape over the erase-protection tab hole.

IMMEDIATE RECORDING

Recording a Program As you Watch It

1. Turn on the VCR and The TV. If you use a TV monitor, set it to the
video mode and skip Steps 2 and 3.

2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL switch
    (3 or 4).

3. Press TV/VCR so VCR appears on the display.

4. Insert the tape you want to record on into the VCR.

5. Press CHANNEL/TRACKING-/+ or use the remote control's number buttons
    to select the desired channel.

6. Press RECORD on the VCR or both REC buttons on the remote.
    REC appears on the display

You can press PAUSE/STILL during recording to temporarily pause
recording (during commercials, for example). To resume recording,
    press RECORD.

7. Press STOP to stop recording.

Recording One Program While You Watch Another

1. Follow Steps 1-6 in the previous section "Recording a Program as You
    Watch It."

2. Press TV/VCR so VCR does not appear on the VCR's display. If you
use a TV monitor, set it to the TV mode.

3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch.

4. Press STOP to stop recording.

QUICK TIMER RECORDING

Quick Timer Recording (QTR) automatically stops recording after the length
of time you select (30 minutes to 4 hours). You need not supervise the
VCR while it is recording.

1. Follow Steps 1-5 in "Recording a Program as You Watch It."

2. Press QTR on the VCR twice to begin recording.

3. Repeatedly press QTR until the desired recording length appears on the
VCR's display. The recording lengths are displayed in 30-minute
    increments, up to 4 hours.

You can also use quick timer recording for dubbing (copying) from another
VCR or video device.

QTR Hints: To ensure that you record all of the desired program, select a
recording length longer than the program material.

QTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted, or if the
            erase-protection tab is removed.

If QTR and an automatic timer recording overlap, QTR has
            priority.

To cancel QTR, press STOP or POWER.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

Automatic timer recording (ATR) lets you set the VCR to start and end
recording while you are away. The VCR has six program timers that let
you record on a specific day within a two-week period. The seventh timer
lets you record on the same day every week. You can set each program
timer to record on a different channel.

Automatic timer recording consists of two steps: setting the program timer
and making the automatic timer recording.

SETTING THE PROGRAM TIMER

1. Insert the cassette that you want to record on into the cassette
    compartment.

2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
switch (3 or 4). Press TV/VCR so VCR appears on the display.

If you use a TV monitor, set it to the video mode.

3. Press CHECK/PRGM. ON --:--appears on the VCR's display. If you have
already programmed a timer recording, the set program information
appears. Press CHECK/PRGM until ON --:-- appears on the display.

For weekly recording, press CHECK/PRGM until W appears on the display.

4. Press NEXT on the VCR within three seconds. The day-of-the-week
    indicator flashes.

5. Press CHANNEL/TRACKING -/+ to set the desired day. When you want to
program a day more than a week ahead, press CHANNEL/TRACKING -/+
until NEXT and the desired day of the week appear on the display.
Then press NEXT on the VCR. The hour indicators for the start time
    flash.

6. Press CHANNEL/TRACKING -/+ until the desired start hour appears.
Then press NEXT on the VCR. The minute indicators for the start time
    begin flashing.

Note: Be sure to set AM or PM correctly.

7. Press CHANNEL/TRACKING-/+ until the desired start minutes appear.
Then press NEXT on the VCR. The hour indicators for the end time
begin flashing. OFF appears on the display.

8. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to set the end time.

9. If necessary, press SYSTEM until the correct TV system's indicator
    lights. Then press NEXT.

10. Press CHANNEL/TRACKING -/+ or the remote control's number buttons
and CH to select the channel. Then press NEXT on the VCR.

If you want to set a simulcast or A/V recording, press INPUT SELECT
until SIMUL or LINE appears on the display.

11. The display alternately shows the start and end time for three
seconds, then returns to normal display.

To store other programs, repeat Steps 3 through 9.

MAKING AN AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

After you set the automatic program timer(s), check to be sure that the
tape you want to record on is in the cassette compartment. Then press
TIMER REC on the VCR. TIMER appears on the display to indicate that the
VCR is in the timer standby mode and the VCR turns off.

You can press TIMER REC again to turn on and operate the VCR manually
prior to the set times. But the VCR makes the automatic timer
recording(s) only if you press TIMER REC so TIMER appears on the display
at the set start time(s). REC appears on the display when the VCR begins
recording.

ATR Hints: If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts later has
priority. At the start of the second program, the VCR
switches to record the second program.

If a tape is not loaded or the erase-protection tab is
removed, TIMER does not appear, indicating that you cannot
            make an automatic timer recording.

MONITORING AN AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

To monitor an automatic timer recording, turn on the TV and set its tuner
to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL switch. Press TV/VCR so VCR
appears on the display. Or, if you use a TV monitor, set it to the video
mode.

CHECKING/CLEARING/CHANGING PROGRAM TIMERS

Press CHECK/PRGM on the VCR until the program number you want to check
appears. The start time and end time alternately appear for three
seconds.

If you want to clear the programming for that timer while the start time
and end time alternately appear, press CLEAR on the VCR. The display
changes to --:--.

To change a program timer, follow these steps

1. Press TIMER REC on the VCR so TIMER disappears from the display.

2. Press CHECK/PRGM on the VCR so the program number you want to change
    appears.

3. Press NEXT on the VCR while the start time and end time alternately
    appear.

4. Repeatedly press NEXT until the setting you want to change flashes.

5. Press CHANNEL/TRACKING -/+ to change the setting.

6. Repeatedly press NEXT until the entire display stops flashing.

7. Press TIMER REC until TIMER appears on the display.

RECORDING SIMULCASTS

During a simulcast, the audio signals for a TV program are broadcast on
the radio while monaural audio and video signals are broadcast on
television.

Use the following steps to record the simulcast programs.

1. Connect your receiver's tape-out jacks to your VCR's AUDIO INPUT jack.
Use a Y-adapter to feed both left and right channels.

2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and receiver.

3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the VCR's
    cassette compartment.

4. Press INPUT SELECT on the VCR until SIMUL appears on the display.

5. Tune the receiver to the proper radio station.

6. Use CHANNEL/TRACKING-+ or the remote control's number buttons and
CH to select the proper channel.

7. Record the program.

The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing.

You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with
A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR.

Always use video-quality shielded cables with phono connectors to connect
the video output device to the VCR. Do not use standard audio patch
cords.
