* Tape speed

  * Remaining QTR time (if programmed)

Press DISPLAY again to clear the information.

Note: If you change the channel while information is displayed, all
information except the channel number disappears. Then, after about 4
seconds, the information reappears.

Blue Screen Display

The TV/VCR displays a blue screen when you select the menu, play unrecorded
portions of a tape, or when you tune to a weak TV station. You can turn
the blue screen on or off.

Notes:

  * You cannot record the blue screen on a tape in the TV/VCR.

  * If you tune to a weak TV station, the TV/VCR mutes the sound when it
    displays the blue screen.

Follow these steps to turn the blue screen on or off.

1. Press MENU/ACTION to display the main menu.

2. Use CH /\, CH \/, VOL + >, and VOL - < to highlight VCR, then press
    MENU/ACTION.

3. Repeatedly press CH /\ or CH \/ to highlight NOISY CH BLUE BACK. Then
press > to select ON or OFF.

4. Press MENU/ACTION twice to exit.

Function Indicators

Each time you press a function button (such as STOP), the selected
function's indicator appears.

When you change the channel, the new channel number appears for about 4
seconds.

Note: If you play back a poor quality (worn) or damaged tape, the function
indicator might not appear.

USING THE SLEEP TIMER

The TV/VCR's sleep timer lets you set the TV/VCR so it plays for a specific
amount of time then automatically turns off.

Follow these steps to set the sleep timer.

1. Press SLEEP on the remote control. SLEEP TIMER 30 appears.

2. Within 5 seconds, repeatedly press SLEEP until the TV screen shows the
desired sleep time (30, 60, or 90 minutes).

Note: If you do not press SLEEP again within 5 seconds, SLEEP and the
displayed time period disappear. Start over at Step 1.

To see the remaining time on the sleep timer, press DISPLAY. SLEEP TIMER
and the remaining time appear on the TV screen for a few seconds.

Note: The TV/VCR automatically displays the remaining time beginning when
there are 3 minutes left.

To cancel the sleep timer, repeatedly press SLEEP until SLEEP TIMER 00
appears.

USING THE NITE/GAME MODE

The TV/VCR has a preprogrammed picture control setting for viewing
broadcasts or video tapes at night, or video games at any time. These
settings soften the contrast and are easier on the eyes.

To select the nite or game setting, repeatedly press GAME on the front
panel until NITE or GAME appears for about 4 seconds. To turn off the nite
or game setting, repeatedly press GAME until NITE and GAME disappear.

Notes:

  * You cannot select the game setting while playing a tape or the FM
    radio.

  * If you turn the power off (or the power is interrupted), play a tape,
change the channel, change the input signal source, or play the FM
radio, the TV/VCR automatically turns off the game setting.

  * If you turn the power off (or the power is interrupted), the TV/VCR
automatically turns off the nite setting.

USING THE COUNTER

Your TV/VCR's counter shows how long a tape has been running in hours,
minutes, and seconds. To display the counter, press DISPLAY on the remote
control. To reset the counter to 0:00:00, press COUNTER RESET on the
remote control.

Note: Because the TV/VCR's counter reads special signals recorded on the
tape, the counter might stop while you fast-forward or rewind through a
blank section on the tape. This is normal.

Follow these steps to easily return to a selected point on the tape.

1. During playback, press DISPLAY on the remote control.

2. When you see the location on the tape that you want to return to later,
press COUNTER RESET on the remote control. The TV/VCR displays 0:00:00
    on the TV screen

3. To return to the location you selected in Step 2, press STOP then
ZERO/1 MIN. The tape fast-forwards or rewinds and automatically stops
    at 0:00:00.

Note: The tape usually stops exactly at 0:00:00. However, depending
on the tape you use, it might stop a few seconds sooner or later.

USING ONE-MINUTE SKIP

To skip over unwanted portions of a recording (such as commercials), while
playing a tape, simply press ZERO/1 MIN. The TV/VCR fast-forwards the
tape, skipping over 60 seconds of recorded time. Then normal playback
resumes.

USING INDEX SEARCH

Your TV/VCR has the VHS Index Search System. Each time you start
recording, the TV/VCR automatically marks the tape with an index mark at
that location. You can locate the recording you want to play or skip the
recording(s) you don't want to watch by either entering the number of index
marks or by scanning. The TV/VCR searches forward or backward from the
current location.

Notes:

  * Since the TV/VCR does not display the index marks, we recommend you
list the recordings on each tape in order on the tape's box, to make it
easier to locate a particular recording on the tape.

  * Index search might not function properly when two or more index marks
    are close to each other.

  * If you do not press any button within 10 seconds after you select INDEX
SEARCH, the TV/VCR cancels index search.

  * If you activate the direct access index search at a tape position very
close to an index mark, the TV/VCR might not count that mark. See
    "Direct Access Index Search," below.

  * Recording over an index mark erases that index mark.

Direct Access Index Search

1. Press INDEX. The following appears on the screen if there is a timer
recording on the program index list:

    ===========================
         INDEX

INDEX SEARCH
PROGRAM INDEX SEARCH

SELECT: /\ \/ KEY
SET : > KEY
END : INDEX KEY
    ===========================

If not, skip to Step 3.

2. Repeatedly press CH /\ or CH \/ to highlight INDEX SEARCH.

3. Press VOL + >. INDEX appears.

4. Use the number keys to enter the number of index marks you want to
    skip.

For example, if the tape is at the second recording (index mark 2) and
you want to watch the seventh recording (at index mark 7), enter 5 to
skip past index marks 3 through 6. Or, if the tape is at index mark 9
and you want to watch the recording at index mark 3, enter 7 to skip
past index marks 9 through 4.

Then press FAST-F to skip forward to that index mark or REWIND (REW on
the remote control) to skip backward. When the tape reaches the
selected index mark, the VCR starts normal playback.

Index Scan

1. Follow Steps 1-3 under "Direct Access Index Search," above.

2. Press FAST-F or REWIND (REW on the remote control) to start the scan.
AUTO INDEX SEARCH appears and the VCR starts to fast-forward or rewind.
As the tape passes an index mark, the TV/VCR plays at normal speed for
10 seconds, then resumes fast-forwarding or rewinding.

3. When you see the recording you want, press PLAY. Normal playback
    starts.

Program Index Search (Timer Recording Only)

The program index search looks for a timer-recorded program in a program
index list, then searches for the specified program

The TV/VCR automatically adds recorded programs to the program index list.
However, when you eject the tape or press any function button such as
REWIND (REW on the remote control) or PLAY then record a new program using
normal recording, any previous program is erased from the list.

Follow these steps to search for a timer-recorded program.

1. Press INDEX. You see:

    ================================
           INDEX

INDEX SEARCH
PROGRAM INDEX SEARCH

SELECT: /\ \/ KEY
SET : > KEY
END : INDEX KEY
    ================================

2. Press CH /\ or CH \/ to highlight PROGRAM INDEX SEARCH, then press VOL
    + >. You see:

    ============================
      PROGRAM INDEX
DATE START CATEGORY CH
12/28 10:00A SPORTS ABCD

1/ 4 8:00P COMEDY CBC
1/ 7 3:00P MUSIC NBC

SELECT: /\ \/ KEY
SEARCH: > KEY
END : INDEX KEY
    ============================

3. Repeatedly press CH /\ or CH \/ to select the program you want, then
press VOL + > to start the search.

When the tape reaches the selected program, the TV/VCR starts normal
playback.

USING AUTOMATIC REPEAT PLAYBACK

the end of a tape, or from the beginning to a blank (unrecorded) portion of
a tape (at least 30 seconds long).

Or, to cancel automatic repeat playback, select OFF.

5. Press MENU/ACTION twice to return to the normal screen.

USING VCR LOCK

You can use the VCR lock feature to prevent operation of the VCR (by small
children, for example).

To turn on VCR lock, without a tape loaded, hold down REC/TIME on the front
panel for at least 7 seconds until VCR LOCK ACTIVATED appears on the
screen.

If any VCR control button on the TV/VCR (except STOP/EJECT) or remote
control is pressed while the VCR is locked, VCR LOCK ACTIVATED appears on
the screen, and the button does not function.

To release VCR lock, hold down REC/TIME on the front panel for at least 7
seconds until VCR LOCK OFF appears on the screen.

Notes:

  * VCR lock is automatically released after 24 hours (if the clock is
    set).

  * The TV/VCR runs any timer recordings you set even when VCR lock is
    turned on.

  * You can load or eject a tape while the VCR lock is on.

TURNING THE ERROR BEEP ON/OFF

The TV/VCR is preset to sound an error beep is you make an invalid entry or
try an invalid operation, but you can turn the beep off.

  * Scheduled stop time (for timer recording only)

  * Channel number

number you want the TV/VCR to tune to, or select PLAY if you want the
TV/VCR to play a tape, or select FM1-FM9 if you want to wake to the FM
station when it turns itself on.

    Notes:

    * If you want the TV/VCR to play a tape at a preset alarm time, be sure
      to insert a video tape.

move forward or ADD/DLT to move backward to the incorrect entry, then
      correct it.

5. Press VOL + > then CH /\ or CH \/ to select alarm ON or OFF.

6. Press ON-TIMER then turn off the TV/VCR. The ON TIMER indicator lights

CLOSED CAPTION

Your TV/VCR has several closed caption options. Check you TV program
listings for CC (Closed Caption) broadcasts.

Selecting the Closed Caption Mode

captioning methods; C1 or C2. You can select one of two options (CAPTION
or TEXT) on your TV/VCR for each type of captioning.

Here are the caption settings you can select:

TEXT1 or TEXT2 -- The center of the screen is blocked out. When the TV
station broadcasts text, such as program listings or special information,
it appears in this space.

CAPTION OFF -- Narration does not appear on the screen even if the TV
receives a closed caption or text broadcast. (This is the default
setting).
