Stopping the Tape Temporarily During Recording/Playback

If you want to edit out some material while you are recording, press PAUSE/
STILL; the PAUSE/STILL indicator will light. Press PAUSE/STILL again to
resume recording.

NOTE: If you leave the VCR in the pause/still mode for more than five min-
utes, it will automatically switch to the stop mode.

Changing the Channel You Are Recording

1. Press PAUSE/STILL.

2. Press the channel select button for the new channel.

3. Press PAUSE/STILL again to resume recording on the new channel.

Using the Digital Counter

When you press PLAY or PLAY & RECORD, the tape is automatically pulled out
of the cassette and threaded through the VCR mechanism. As this happens the
reading on the digital counter will change (decrease by up to 20-25 digits).
For this reason, it is usually best to take the reading before you begin
recording/playback or after you press STOP; the tape will not be threaded
at these times. Then when you use fast-forward or rewind, and the tape is
again not threaded, the reading will be correct (+/-2 to 3 digits).

If you are performing editing or recording functions, in which the tape
remains threaded (using SEARCH or PAUSE/STILL), take counter readings after
PLAY or PLAY & RECORD have been pressed.

Memory Rewinding

The MEMORY button can be used during rewind, to automatically stop the tape
when the counter reaches a pre-set 0000 reading.

For example, this feature can be used to return the tape to a pre-selected
position immediately after recording, or to repeatedly play back a portion
of a tape.

1. Before playback or recording press RESET; the counter will show 0000.
    (See "Using the Digital Counter.")

2. Press MEMORY; an M will appear on the display.

3. Begin playback or recording.

4. Press STOP when recording on playback is complete.

5. Press REWIND/SEARCH; the tape will automatically stop when the counter
    returns to 0000.

NOTE: In practice the tape stops slightly past the pre-set position
           (approx. 9999).

Auto Rewinding

When the end of a tape is reached during recording, playback, or fast-for-
ward, the tape will automatically rewind to the beginning (or to a preset
memory position). The cassette mechanism will disengage after rewinding,
but the VCR will not shut itself off.

NOTE: The tape will not auto-rewind during timer recording.

Forward and Reverse Picture Search

You may view the video program at a high speed in either a forward or
reverse direction. When in the play mode, press FAST-Forward/SEARCH to view
the tape at a faster speed in the forward direction; press REWIND/SEARCH to
view the tape at a fast speed in the reverse direction. The sound will be
muted.

This feature should be used to aid you in finding a particular section of a
tape; you will get best results when playing back at the Beta III speed.

To return to normal playback, press PLAY.

NOTES: If you do not press PLAY, the Model 20 will return to the play mode
        automatically in approximately five minutes.

The picture will be less than normal viewing quality during Forward
        and Reverse Picture Search.

Still Frame During Playback

If you press PAUSE/STILL during playback, the picture will "freeze" on the
screen. You may use this to study details of a particular scene, Press
PAUSE/STILL again to continue playback.

NOTE: The VCR will automatically switch to the stop mode, if it is left in
the pause/still mode for more than five minutes.

The Tracking Control

This knob is used to help eliminate video "noise" (lines and dots on the
screen). For tapes recorded on your VCR, the center setting (you'll feel a
slight catch) is usually best. Tapes recorded on other VCRs may require
adjustment.

If you encounter video "noise" during playback, adjust the knob to the
right or left to achieve the best picture.
