Model-20 Beta Hi-Fi Video Cassette Recorder
(160-0600) Operation Faxback Doc. # 41506

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Before operating the Model 20, plug in the power cord and allow the unit to
warm up for at least 1-2 hours. This is especially important in areas with
high humidity and when the unit has been moved from a cold area (your car
for example) to a warm area. Because of the protective DEW circuit (see
Faxback Doc. # 41511), failure to follow this procedure might result in
sporadic operation, or no operation at all, when the unit is first plugged
in.

Viewing Only TV (Without Recording)

You do not need to disconnect the VCR from your TV in order to watch TV
without recording. When POWER is off, or the TV/VCR switch is set to TV,
your TV will operate as if it were connected directly to the antenna or
cable.

NOTE: The VCR must be plugged into an AC outlet.

1. Set POWER to off or set TV/VCR switch to TV.

2. Turn on TV and select the channel you want to watch.

Viewing and Recording the Same Program

1. Press POWER on; TIMER switch must be OFF.

2. Turn on TV and set to the same channel as VCR CHANNEL switch.

3. Set TV/VCR switch to VCR.

4. Set AUDIO INPUT switch to OFF.

5. Select BETA Hi-Fi or REGULAR audio recording mode.

6. Set ALC switch as desired and adjust recording levels, if necessary.

7. Select desired tape speed (Beta II or Beta III).

8. Insert cassette.

9. Select channel to be recorded.

10. Press RECORD and PLAY at the same time.

11. Press STOP when recording is complete.

Recording One Program While Viewing Another

You can record one program while viewing another; then play back the
recorded program at your convenience.

Make sure the program you are recording is tuned properly before switching
to watch the other program. Start the recording by following the instruc-
tions under "Viewing and Recording the Same Program" above.
Then proceed as shown below.

1. Set TV/VCR switch to TV.

2. Set TV to channel you want to watch.

3. To stop recording, press STOP.

If you are recording a tape that will only be played on a standard Beta VCR
it is best to record it in the regular mode.

Recording in the Audio-Only Mode

The Beta Hi-Fi stereo audio recording system is of such high quality (super-
ior to most cassette and reel-to-reel decks) that you will probably want to
use it instead of a regular audio recording deck, in many situations. For
this reason we have included the BETA Hi-Fi/AUDIO Hi-Fi/REGULAR recording
mode switch; for audio-only recording set it to AUDIO Hi-Fi. In this mode,
the source selected by the AUDIO INPUT switch will be recorded using the
Beta Hi-Fi circuitry but the video portion of the tape will be completely
blacked out.

If the AUDIO INPUT switch is set to ON (or FM), you may record in stereo
through the AUDIO IN jacks. If in the OFF position, you may record the
audio portion of a UHF/VHF/cable program; it will be a mono recording, but
it will still use the Beta Hi-Fi circuitry.

NOTE: You may also make timer recordings in the audio-only mode.

Setting Beta Hi-Fi Recording Levels

When making Beta Hi-Fi recordings, you must first set the BETA Hi-Fi/AUDIO
Hi-Fi/REGULAR switch to either BETA Hi-Fi or AUDIO Hi-Fi and make the neces-
sary connections to the Model 20 AUDIO IN jacks and the audio source. Then
activate the audio source and adjust the RECORD LEVEL controls so that the
highest peaks give a reading of 0 on the level meters.

If you set the level too low, you will get too much tape hiss in the record-
ing. If the level is too high, there will be unnecessary distortion.

1. Press POWER on; TIMER switch must be OFF.

2. Load a Beta cassette.

3. Set BETA Hi-Fi/AUDIO Hi-Fi/REGULAR switch to AUDIO Hi-Fi.

4. Set AUDIO INPUT switch for desired source.

5. Select the recording speed (Beta II or Beta III).

6. Activate the audio source (tape desk, amplifier/receiver, etc.).

7. Adjust the RECORD LEVEL controls. (See above)

8. Press PLAY and RECORD at the same time.

9. Use STOP and PAUSE as you would with video recordings.

Live Recording

The AUDIO IN jacks on the Model 20 require a high level source, such as the
line out jacks of a receiver/amplifier or tape deck. If you wish to record
using microphones, you must connect a mixer or other pre-amplifier device
between the microphones and the VCR AUDIO IN jacks.

Playback

The TV/VCR selector automatically switches to VCR during playback; the tape
speed is automatically selected, also.

1. Press POWER on; the TIMER switch must be OFF.

2. Turn on the TV, receiver/amplifier. and other necessary equipment in
    your audio/video system.

3. Set the TV to the same channel as the VCR CHANNEL switch.

4. Insert a pre-recorded tape.

5. Set the PLAY switch (REGULAR, BETA/AUDIO Hi-Fi) to the desired position.

NOTE: The regular mode is automatically selected when a tape with only
a regular audio track is played back.

6. Press PLAY.

7. Press STOP.
