Model-20 Beta Hi-Fi Video Cassette Recorder
(160-0600) Preparations/Connections Faxback Doc. # 41503
Preparation For Use
Setting the CHANNEL Switch
When the Model 20 is in the playback mode, or when the TV/VCR selector
switch is in the VCR position, your TV Will receive the channel selected by
the VCR on either channel 3 or 4. Set the CHANNEL switch to the station
that is not used for normal broadcasts in your area; then set your TV to
that same channel when viewing material from the VCR.
When the TV/VCR switch is in the TV position or when the VCR is off, your
TV will receive programs on regular channels, as if the VCR were not conn-
ected between the signal source (antenna, cable, etc.) and the TV.
Connections
Signals for your VCR will come from four basic sources; VHF channels 2-13,
UHF channels 14-83, cable channels A - W, or a base-band audio/video source
(a VCR, video disc player, TV monitor, etc.). You may connect your VCR to
one, two, three, or all four sources, depending on your needs and what is
available in your viewing area.
NOTE: When a connection is made to the VIDEO IN jack, video signals from
VHF/UHF/cable source are not received by the VCR. Audio signals are
selected by the AUDIO INPUT switch, no matter what connections are
made.
For some of the most common types of connections, see the drawings on Fax-
back Doc. # 41531, # 41532 and # 41533. The wire, cables, and transformers
necessary for most of these connections are supplied with your Model 20.
For more complex set-ups (with multiple TVs, other VCRs, audio/video proces-sors, etc.) the personnel at your local Radio Shack store will give you tips
on how to make the connections and what extra accessories you will need.
General Connection Guidelines
Connect the VHF and/or UHF OUT jacks on the VCR to the antenna terminals
on your TV. Then connect the antenna and/or cable TV to the VHF/UHF IN
jacks on the VCR.
If you want to connect your VCR to a TV that has a built-in antenna
(rabbit ears), disconnect the built-in antenna leads and connect the VHF
terminals on the TV to the VHF OUT jack on the VCR.
For best reception, we recommend an outside antenna.
Cable and Pay TV Reception
With the connections shown on Faxback Doc. # 41532, Fig. A, you may watch
or record any of the cable channels but during recording you may watch only
the channel you are recording.
However, if your TV has a "Cable-ready" tuner and you are not receiving any
"scrambled" premium channels, you may connect the "From Cable System" wire
directly to the VHF IN terminal on the VCR. Then you may watch any channel
while recording another, by setting the TV/VCR switch to the TV position.
NOTE to CATV Installers:
This reminder is provided to call attention to Article 820-22 of the NEC,
which provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular specifies
that the ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building,
as close to the point of cable entry as practical.
The connection on Faxback Doc. # 41532, Fig. B allows you to record one
channel while viewing another, even if your TV does not have a cable-ready
tuner. To record, you must press the Model 20 channel select button that
is set to the same channel as the 3-4 switch on the CATV box; then set the
selector on the CATV box to the desired channel.
If you wish to view the same channel you are recording, set your TV to the
same channel as the CHANNEL 3/4 switch on the Model 20.
If you want to watch a different channel than you are recording, all cable
programs (except "scrambled" premium channels) will be available, on your
TV's UHF channels, through the Cable Converter.
NOTE: If the television does not have a 75 Ohm VHF antenna connection, use
another matching transformer (15-1140).
Re-Programming the Channel Select Buttons
The 12 channel select buttons of your VCR tuner have been pre-programmed to
VHF channels 2 - 13. If you plan to view only those stations, you need not
make any adjustment of the tuner controls.
However, if you wish to reprogram some or all of the channel select buttons
follow the procedure below.
Before Start Adjustment
Set the TIMER switch to OFF.
Press POWER on; the indicator will light.
Set the TV/VCR switch to the VCR mode; the VCR indicator will light.
Turn on the TV or video monitor connected to the VCR.
Set the TV to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the back of the
VCR. (This is not necessary if you are using a monitor.)
If your TV has AFC or other auto-tuning features, turn them off.
1. Open the tuning compartment door.
2. Press the channel select button you want to reprogram; the channel
indicator for that button will light.
3. Using, the tuning tool located in the tuning compartment, set the
channel range selector, which corresponds to the channel select button
you are re-programming, to the range that contains the new channel you
want to program.
2 - 6 (VHF-LO)
A - 1,7 - 13, J - W (mid-band cable, VHF-HI, super-band cable)
14 - 83 (UHF)
4. Rotate the tuning thumb wheel that corresponds to the channel select
button you are re-programming, until you receive the clearest picture
possible on the desired channel.
Watch the tuning indicator; it will show the approximate position of
the channel within each range.
Repeat steps 2 - 4 for any additional channel select buttons you want
to change.
5. Close the tuning compartment door. The TV and VCR are properly tuned
when a clear picture is received.
NOTE: The automatic fine tuning circuit in your VCR is activated when
the tuning access door is closed, unless you move the AFC peg
to OFF.
6. Turn on the AFC or other auto-tuning on your TV.
7. Pull out the channel number holder (plastic tab).
8. Remove the original channel number panels and, using the channel number
cards (supplied), select new channel numbers and insert them in the
appropriate slots.
9. Re-insert the channel number holder.
10. Save unused channel numbers for future use.
Tuning Tips
If the picture on a particular channel is not clear, repeat steps 1 - 5
for that particular channel.
If the picture on all channels is not clear, the TV set is not tuned
properly; adjust the TV as follows.
a) Turn off the TV AFC switch, if it has one.
b) Set the TV to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the VCR.
c) Adjust the TVs fine tuning to receive a clear picture and sound.
d) Turn on the TV's AFC switch.
