Multi-Channel Television Sound

Beginning in 1984, the FCC allowed television stations to broadcast multi-
channel stereo audio signals. All stations are not yet broadcasting these
signals. but the demand is growing as more and more people buy TVs and VCRs
that include multi-channel sound tuners.

In addition to the main stereo sound track, a multi-channel sound broadcast
might also include a completely separate mono "special audio program" (SAP).
The SAP signal may be used for a second language or additional commentary
for the video program.

The multi-channel stereo and SAP signals are specially encoded and are
similar in quality to FM stereo broadcasts.

They cannot be received or decoded by an FM radio tuner, however. A special
multi-channel sound tuner, such as the one in your Model 42 VCR, is re-
quired.

NOTE: If a TV or VCR does not have a Multi-Channel Sound tuner, the signal
will be received in mono, as usual.

After the Model 42 has been connected to an antenna, as described in this
manual, the STEREO and SAP indicators will tell you when the selected sta-
tion is broadcasting a multi-channel stereo signal and if a SAP signal is
also present.

Then, by connecting the AUDIO OUT jacks of the Model 42 to your stereo
system's amplifier/receiver, you may listen to stereo audio and/or record
the stereo signal on the left and right audio channels of the Model 42.

If a SAP signal is present you may record it on one audio channel and record
the main multi-channel sound signal (combined L+R mono) on the other audio
channel. Then, you may listen to either audio program during playback.

NOTE: Multi-channel sound signals are only used for broadcast TV channels
and are not used by cable-only channels. If you are receiving local
TV stations as part of a 36-channel cable service, multi-channel
sound signals might be included. If the service offers more than 36
channels, multi-channel sound signals are probably not included. See
Faxback Doc. # 41001 for the necessary connections to receive both
antenna and cable signals, and thus receive the multi-channel stereo
       signals.

Some premium cable channels offer stereo sound, but these signals are sent
through the cable wire and are designed to be received by a standard FM
stereo tuner. You may connect the Model 42 AUDIO IN jacks to output of an FM
receiver or tuner to record these cable stereo signals. See "Simul-cast"
Recording, on Faxback Doc. # 41006.

HQ (High Quality) Video System

Your Model 42 VCR has the new HQ video system that delivers improved video
recording and playback while remaining completely compatible with regular
VCRs. The HQ feature is actually a combination of several new circuits that
add the sharpness, detail and clarity to the picture. Because these cir-
cuits affect both recording and playback, you will get optimum results when
playing back an HQ recorded tape on an HQ VCR. However, you will realize
some of the positive benefits when an HQ tape is played on a regular VCR.

The end result is that your HQ VCR will improve video quality in almost any
situation. Therefore, the circuits are always functioning for all record-ing and playback on your Model 42 VCR.
