Special Record/Playback Functions
Tape Motion Display

times. The following chart shows the display symbol for each mode.

Automatic and Repeat Play
These features work only with tapes that have the erase-prevention tab
removed.
If the AUTO FUNCTION switch is set to AUTO PLAY, playback begins automatic-
ally when a tape is inserted. When the tape ends, the VCR automatically
rewinds and ejects the tape and turns POWER off.
If the AUTO FUNCTION switch is set to AUTO REPEAT playback begins automatic-
ally when a tape is inserted. When the tape ends, the VCR automatically
rewinds and plays it again.
Two-Speed Visual Search
Two-speed visual search allows you to view a tape at either of two speeds
in the forward or reverse directions.
To use this function, begin regular playback of a tape. Then press FAST-F
to search forward or REWIND to search backward. The tape moves at slower
visual search speed in the direction you choose. Press the same button
again and the tape moves at the faster visual search speed. Press the
button additional times to alternate between two search speeds. See the
chart below for relative tape speeds.
Times Pressed 1 2 3(=1)
Search EP x 9 x 15 x 9
Speed SP, LP x 5 x 7 x 5
Press PLAY to return to normal playback speed.
During visual search, the sound is muted, and the picture quality is not as
good as during normal playback. The visual search picture quality is best
with tapes recorded at the EP speed.
Freeze-Frame
Freeze-frame allows you to stop the action while playing a tape.
Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press it again
to return to normal playback.
During freeze-frame, the picture quality is not as good as during normal
viewing. The freeze-frame picture is best with tapes recorded at the EP
speed.
NOTE: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for more than five
minutes, it automatically returns to the play mode.
Fast-Forward/Rewind
Use FAST-Forward and REWIND buttons when the VCR is in the stop mode to
move the tape quickly in the desired direction.
There is no picture or sound when you use these functions, but you can use
the counter and memory functions to locate specific sections of the tape.
Digital Counter with Memory
Use digital counter and memory functions to mark, and return to, specific
locations on a video tape. To use either function, press CLOCK/COUNTER so
that the counter appears on the display.
To use the counter most effectively, always rewind tapes to the beginning
before using them. Then press RESET to set the counter to 0000. As you
record or play back a tape, note the counter reading at any desired
location.
Next time, if you start at the beginning of the tape with a counter reading
of 0000, the number should be the same (plus or minus a few counts) for the
same location on the tape.
To use the memory function, press RESET at a tape location you want to
return to - the counter displays 0000. When you are ready to return to the
selected location, press MEMORY so that M appears on the display. Then press
REWIND. The VCR stops when the counter returns to 0000. (In actual prac-
tice, the counter usually indicates 9999.)
Tracking Control
The TRACKING control allows adjustment of your VCR for best playback of
tapes made on other machines. The center "detent" position is best for
recording and for playback of tapes made on the Model 42.
If, however, you are playing tapes made on other machines and the quality
is not good, adjust this control for best results.
CAUTION: For consistent results, set the TRACKING control to the center
position before making a recording.
Dew Protection System
Moisture inside the VCR can cause tape "jams" or damage the video heads.
The dew protection system helps avoid such damage by preventing VCR opera-
tion when it senses excess moisture.
Activation of the dew protection system is indicated by a flashing DEW
indicator. You can resume normal operation only after the moisture is gone
and the indicator stops flashing.
Record Pause
Use PAUSE/STILL button during recording to edit out unwanted material, such
as commercials.
Simply press the button at the beginning of the unwanted material - the
tape stops temporarily. Press the button again to resume recording.
Using PAUSE/STILL makes a smooth, almost unnoticeable "edit". If you use
STOP, there will be a "glitch" at the edit point.
NOTES: The PAUSE/STILL button has no effect during timer recordings.
If you leave the VCR in the pause mode for more than five minutes,
it automatically returns to the record mode.
Automatic Rewind System
When the end of the tape is reached during manual recording, playback, or
fast-forward, the tape automatically rewinds to the beginning (or to the
0000 counter reading if the memory function is activated).
The VCR remains on after automatic rewinding.
Hi-Fi Tracking Adjustment
To assure optimum hi-fi sound playback, set the METER switch to HI-FI
TRACKING. Then, adjust the TRACKING control for the maximum reading on the
level meter - only the left channel of the meter operates in this mode.
This procedure is most important on pre-recorded tapes or other tapes not
made on the Model 42.
Set the METER switch to AUDIO LEVEL after making the adjustment.
Headphone Jack with Level Control
A 1/8" stereo jack is included to allow you to hear the superb hi-fi stereo
quality audio, even if you do not have the Model 42 connected to your stereo
system or a stereo TV. Headphones can be used at any time for private
listening - simply turn down the TV or stereo system volume and adjust the
headphones volume using the PHONES LEVEL control.
Neither the headphones not the PHONES LEVEL control affects the VCR's
recording or playback level.
