MOD-42 Cable Ready Stereo VCR
(160-0612) Recording Faxback Doc. # 41005

Tape Selection

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and the
life of the VCR. Use only tapes that have the official VHS logo.

High-grade tapes produce the best results, especially at the EP speed. They
also have better oxide coatings that help prevent dirty video heads.

Although T-160 tapes offer the longest recording time, they use thinner
tape that is more likely to cause tape "jams". We suggest that you use
T-120 or shorter tapes.

Below is a chart that shows the maximum recording times for different
length tapes at the three recording speeds.

Cassette T-60 T-120 T-160

SP Mode 1 hour 2 hours 2-2/3 hours
                    (60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)

LP Mode 2 hours 4 hours 5-1/3 hours
                    (120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes)

EP Mode 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
                    (180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)

Hi-Fi/Regular Recording

The Model 42 always records both hi-fi and regular audio tracks. If the
audio source is stereo, the hi-fi track will be stereo. The regular audio
track is always mono.

When recording with the TUNER MODE switch set to SAP, the main signal is put
on the left channel and SAP on the right. However, because the regular track
is always mono, only the main signals are put on the regular track.

During recording, adjust the HI-FI RECORDING LEVEL control so that the
meters peak into the red area only at the loudest points in the program.
The METER switch must be set to AUDIO LEVEL. See "Hi-Fi Tracking Adjustment"
on Faxback Doc. # 41007.

Recording and Watching the Same Program

To record and watch the same channel, use one of the connections shown on
Faxback Doc. # 41001. Then, proceed as outlined below.

If you are recording from another VCR, a laser disc, or another source with
A/V outputs see "Recording from One VCR to Another" on Faxback Doc. # 41006.

1. Turn on the VCR and the TV.

2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the back
of the VCR - Channel 3 or 4.

3. Insert a blank VHS video cassette or one you want to record over. The
erase prevention tab must be in place, or the hole must be covered with
    tape.

4. Press the TV/VCR button so that VCR appears on the display.

5. Press INPUT SELECT to choose the tuner mode.

See "Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs" on Faxback Doc. # 41002.

Recording One Program While Watching Another

If two programs you want to watch come on at the same time, you can record
one program while watching another. Then, you can watch the recorded pro-
gram at your convenience.

Begin by following all steps in "Recording and Watching the Same Program"
above. Then proceed as shown below.

1. Press the TV/VCR button to select the TV mode - VCR does not appear on
    the display.

2. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch.

Quick Timer Recording (QTR)

The Model 42 is capable of two types of quick timer recording - immediate
and delayed.

Immediate QTR lets you start the recording manually by pressing a single
button. The recording stops automatically after the length of time you
select - up to 4 hours 59 minutes.

Delayed QTR allows you to program recording to start any time within the
following 24-hour period. As with immediate QTR, the recording stops auto-
matically after the length of time you select - up to 4 hours 59 minutes.

You cannot use immediate QTR when the VCR is programmed for delayed QTR.

Immediate Quick Timer Recording

In the following example, the VCR is set to record Channel 8 for 2 hours.

1. Press POWER so that the POWER indicator lights.

2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch
on the back of the VCR.

3. Press the TV/VCR button to select the VCR mode - VCR appears on the
    display.

NOTE: Steps 2 and 3 are not absolutely necessary for quick timer
recording but are suggested because they allow you to confirm
           recording of the desired program.

4. Insert a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into the
    cassette compartment.

The erase prevention tab must be in place, or the hole must be covered
    with tape.

5. Press INPUT SELECT to choose the desired mode - tuner, AUX, or simul.

6. Set the TUNER MODE switch and AUDIO OUTPUT switch as needed.

See "Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs" on Faxback Doc. # 41002.

7. Set the REC SPEED switch for the desired recording speed - EP, LP or SP.

8. Select the channel or prepare the A/V source, to be recorded. The tuner
has no effect on A/V source recording.

9. Press the LENGTH button. Recording begins, and 0:15 is displayed. Then
press LENGTH repeatedly until the desired QTR length is displayed.

    0:15 - 0:30 - 1:00 - 1:30 - 2:00 - 3:00 - 4:00

You can use the FWD and REV buttons to set the time more precisely.
Always make the recording length a few minutes longer than the program
    material - to be safe.

To stop immediate QTR, simply press STOP.

Delayed Quick Timer Recording

1. Perform steps 1-8 of "Immediate Quick Timer Recording".

2. Press the STANDBY button until the desired start-time is displayed - AM
11:00, for example. The QTR indicator lights to show that delayed QTR is
    programmed.

The start-times are displayed in 10-minute increments. You can use the
FWD and REV button to set more precise times.

3. Press LENGTH repeatedly until the desired QTR length is displayed.

    0:15 - 0:30 - 1:00 - 1:30 - 2:00 - 3:00 - 4:00.

You can use the FWD and REV buttons to set the time more precisely.
Always make the recording length a few minutes longer than the program
    material - to be safe.

To cancel delayed QTR before the start-time, press CLEAR. After recording
has begun, you can stop recording by pressing STOP.

Quick Timer Recording Hints

The QTR indicator flashes, and recording does not take place if the tape is
not inserted, if the erase tab is removed or if automatic timer recording is
in progress.

Quick timer recording is not possible when the TIMER indicator is on.

During QTR recording, the display shows the remaining recording time unless
you press COUNTER/CLOCK to change the display mode. Continue pressing
COUNTER/CLOCK to return to the remaining-time display.

POWER goes off automatically at the end of QTR.

You cannot operate the VCR manually during quick timer recording.

If the dew protection system stops operation, quick timer recording is
canceled.

Automatic Timer Recording

Automatic timer recording allows you to set the VCR to start and end record-
ing while you are away. The Model 42 can record four separate events on
different channels within a 14-day period. Also, any of the four timer pro-
grams can be used to record at the same time every day or once a week.

Automatic timer recording involves two steps - setting the timer and making
the automatic timer recording.

Setting the Timer Programs

You must set the clock before programming the timer.

In the following example, timer program #1 is set to record channel 5 for
2-1/2 hours beginning at 7:30 AM on next Tuesday.

1. Press POWER so that the POWER indicator lights.

If the indicator does not light, be sure the TIMER indicator is OFF.

2. Press PROG/CLOCK repeatedly until the desired program number is dis-
    played - 1, for example.

3. Press SET. The channel number display flashes.

4. Use the FWD or REV button to select the desired channel. Then press SET
    - the day indicator flashes.

The channel setting has no effect if the VCR is in the AUX mode
    (recording an A/V source).

5. Use the FWD or REV button to select the start-day for the recording -
    Tu, for example.

If the desired day is more than one week away, continue pressing FWD or
REV until II and the desired day are displayed.

If you are programming weekly recording to begin on the set day, press
FWD or REV until WEEKLY and the desired day are displayed.

If you are programming daily recording, press FWD or REV until DAILY
is displayed and the day indicators go off.

6. Press FWD or REV until the desired hour is displayed - 7:xx AM, for
example. Then press SET - the minutes digits flash.

You might have to go through an entire 12-hour period to reach the
    desired time.

Be sure AM or PM is set correctly.

7. Press FWD or REV until the desired minute is displayed - 7:30 AM, for
example. Then press SET - LENGTH is displayed with the hour digit
    flashing.

8. Press FWD or REV until the desired recording length hour is displayed
    - 2, for example. Then, press SET - the recording length minutes digits
    flash.

9. Press FWD or REV until the desired recording length minutes are dis-
played - 2:30, for example. Press SET a final time.

10. If you want to set another timer program, return to set step 2. Other-
wise, the display automatically returns to the actual time after a few
     seconds.

Making an Automatic Timer Recording

After setting the automatic timer program(s), follow the steps below to put
the VCR in the automatic timer mode and make the recording(s).

1. Press POWER so that the POWER indicator lights.

2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one that you want to record over,
    into the cassette compartment.

If the erase prevention tab has been removed, place a piece of plastic
    tape over the hole.

3. Press INPUT SELECT to choose the desired mode - tuner, AUX, or simul.

See "Controlling VCR inputs and Outputs" on Faxback Doc. # 41002.

4. Set the TUNER MODE switch and L/L + R/R switch to the desired positions.

See "Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs" on Faxback Doc. # 41002.

5. Set the REC SPEED switch to the desired position - EP, LP, or SP.

6. Press the TIMER button so that TIMER appears on the display - the POWER
    indicator goes off.

Manual operation of the VCR is not possible while in the TIMER indicator
    is on.

Automatic Timer Recording Hints

The TIMER indicator flashes and recording does not take place if a tape
is not inserted, if the erase tab is removed, or if the timer is not
  properly set.

To stop automatic timer recording, press the TIMER button so that the
  TIMER indicator goes off.

When all timer programs are complete, VCR power turns off automatically.

To use the automatic timer with an A/V source, that source must have its
own timer and must be set to begin playback at the programmed start time.

If the power cord is disconnected or if there is a power failure, record-
ing stops. If the power is off longer than about half a minute, all
  clock/timer settings are lost.

If power returns in less than half a minute, recording will resume.
Recording does not take place during the power failure, however.

If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer
  recording, the recording is canceled.

Monitoring An Automatic Timer Recording

1. Turn on the TV, and set its tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL
    switch on the VCR.

2. Press the TV/VCR button so that VCR appears on the display.

Checking/Changing Timer Programs

To check a timer program, press PROG/CLOCK until the desired program number
flashes. Then, press SET to display the programmed settings in sequence.

You can use the FWD or REV button to change any of the programmed informa-
tion when that information is flashing.

You cannot check timer programs during a timer recording.

Clearing a Timer Program

Timer programs are cleared when the start-time passes, whether the timer
mode is selected or not.

However, if you want to clear a program manually.

1. Press PROG/CLOCK until the desired program number flashes.

2. Press CLEAR.

The display returns to the actual time automatically after a few seconds.
