Playing a Pre-Recorded Tape

1. Plug in and turn on the TV and VCR.

2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the back
of the VCR - either 3 or 4. If possible, select the channel that is
not used for broadcast TV in your area.

See Faxback Doc. # 41002 for details on the CHANNEL switch.

3. If the tape is recorded with stereo Hi-Fi sound, set the VHS/AUDIO HI-
    FI/REGULAR switch to VHS/AUDIO HI-FI and the L/L + R/R switch to L+R.

4. Insert a pre-recorded VHS tape into the cassette compartment. See Fax-
back Doc. # 41001 for video cassette handling instructions. Playback
automatically starts if the erase protection tab is removed.

5. Press PLAY on the VCR front panel or Remote Control if necessary.

Press STOP to stop playback.

Press EJECT to remove the tape.

Normal TV Viewing

To watch TV as usual, turn off the VCR or press the TV/VCR button to select
the TV mode (VCR does not appear on the display.) The antenna or cable
signals pass through the VCR unaffected, as if they are connected directly
to the TV.

Then, select the desired channel using the TV tuner or cable box.

How The Tuner Works

The model 42's 110-channel digital tuner is active when POWER is on and you
select the tuner or simul mode using the INPUT SELECT button. The tuner has
two functions.

It selects VHF/UHF/Cable sources to be recorded on the tape.

It selects the output of the VCR when neither recording nor playback is
taking place and the VCR mode is selected using the TV/VCR button (when
  VCR appears on the display).

The tuner has no effect when POWER is off or you use the INPUT SELECT button
to choose the AUX mode.

Channel Selection

The tuner has 32 channel memory positions. The first 16 are pre programmed
as shown in the chart below. The remaining 16 channel positions are blank.
If you do not need additional channels, use the CHANNEL buttons (< >) to
scan through the pre-programmed channels.

If you want to program additional channels, see "Understanding the Tuner"
and "Programming the Tuner" on the following pages.

If you do not need all the pre-programmed channels, see "Skipping Memory
Positions," on below.

Understanding the Tuner

Although the operation of the Model 42 tuner is similar to other digital
tuners, its programming is probably different from others you have used.

The 32 memory positions have permanent number designations - 1 through 32.
The memory position number cannot be altered and is seen on the display
only during tuner programming.

The actual channel programmed into the memory location is not automatically
displayed during programming. You must identify the channel by comparison
with a known source - usually a TV set.

The channel tag number is the reference number you assign to the memory
position during programming. This is the number displayed during normal
tuner operation. It is best to make the tag number the actual channel used
by the local TV station or cable company.

Stereo and SAP Broadcast Reception

The MTS (multi-channel television sound) decoder built-into the VCR tuner
automatically indicates when stereo and/or SAP (special audio program)
signals are received.

The STEREO indicator lights when a stereo signal is received.

The SAP indicator lights when an SAP signal received with a mono main
signal.

The STEREO and SAP indicator light when the SAP signal is received with
a stereo main signal.

However, the TUNER MODE switch and L/L + R/R switch control what you hear
and what is recorded. For example, if the TUNER MODE switch is set to MONO,
the recorded signal is mono, even if the STEREO indicator is on.

See "Controlling VCR inputs and Outputs" below.

Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs

The CHANNEL switch, TV/VCR button, INPUT SELECT button, TUNER MODE switch,
and PLAY switches (L/L + R/R and VHS/AUDIO HI-FI/REGULAR) work together to
control the input and output signals of the Model 42. This is important
during recording or when using the VCR tuner to select the program you want
to watch.

Be sure you understand the function of each control and how the controls
affect each other.

Also, be sure to carefully read "How the Tuner Works" above .

CHANNEL Switch

During playback, the video tape signals are sent from the VHF OUT Terminal
to the TV on the channel selected by the CHANNEL switch - either 3 or 4.
The tape signals are also sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks.

If a video tape is not playing and you have selected the VCR mode using the
TV/VCR button (VCR appears on the display), the signals selected by the
INPUT SELECT button are sent to the VHF OUT terminal on the channel selected
by the CHANNEL switch - either 3 or 4. The same signals are sent to the
AUDIO/VIDEO OUT Jacks.

The CHANNEL switch has no effect when POWER is off or when the TV mode is
selected using the TV/VCR button.

TV/VCR Button

When you select the VCR mode using the TV/VCR button (VCR appears on the
display) and a tape is not playing, the source selected by the INPUT SELECT
button is sent to the VHF OUT terminal on the channel selected by the
CHANNEL switch.

When you select the TV mode (VCR does not appear on the display), antenna
or cable signals connected to the VHF and UHF IN terminals pass through to
the VHF and UHF OUT terminals unaffected. Use the TV tuner to select
channels as if the signals are connected directly to the TV.

If POWER is on, the source selected by the INPUT SELECT switch is sent to
the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, regardless of the TV/VCR button mode.

INPUT SELECT Button

The INPUT SELECT button has three modes - tuner, AUX, and simul.

When you select the AUX mode, AUX appears on the display.

When you select the simul mode, SIMUL appears on the display.

When you select the tuner mode, there is no indicator on the display.

Each time you press the INPUT SELECT button, the VCR changes modes - tuner,
AUX, simul, tuner, AUX, etc.

The INPUT SELECT button controls the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks whenever power is
on. It controls the VHF OUT terminals only when you select the VCR mode
using the TV/VCR button.

The effects of the three INPUT SELECT modes are shown in the following
chart.

Switch Setting Video Source Audio Source
                             Recorded Recorded

   TUNER TUNER Channel TUNER Channel

AUX VIDEO IN Signal AUDIO IN Signals

SIMUL TUNER Channel AUDIO IN Signals

TUNER MODE Switch

The TUNER MODE switch selects the audio that is recorded when the INPUT
SELECT button is in the tuner mode and MTS stereo signals are being
received. It has no effect or AUX - or simul - mode recordings or on mono
broadcast recordings.

The following chart shows the left and right channel content for each of
the switch settings.

                        Multi-channel L R
                        Stereo + SAP

   * SAP                Multi-channel            L + R         SAP

* Special Audio Program

The sound you hear during recording or playback might also be affected by
the L/L + R/R switch, as described in the following section.

See "Stereo and SAP Broadcast Reception" above for more information on MTS
and SAP signals.

NOTE: The main signal (in mono) is always recorded on the regular track,
regardless of the TUNER MODE switch setting.

PLAY Switches
(L/L+R/R and VHS/AUDIO HI-FI/REGULAR)

The L/L+R/R switch controls the sound you hear during recording or playback.
It is especially useful when the main signal is on the right channel and a
different SAP signal is on the left.

The following chart shows the available audio options.

  VCR SWITCH
OUTPUT SETTING

VHF L+R Left and right channels
OUTPUT combined (mono).

                 L Left channel only.

                 R Right channel only.

AUDIO L+R Left channel from L output,
OUTPUT right from R.

L Left channel from L and
                                R outputs.

R Right channel from L and
                                R outputs.

The switch has no effect on mono signals or on what is recorded on the tape.

The VHS/AUDIO HI-FI/REGULAR switch allows you to manually select the regular
audio track of tapes that have both hi-fi and regular tracks. Simply set the
switch to REGULAR. The Hi-Fi indicator goes off.

If a tape has only a regular track, the VCR plays that track regardless of
the setting of this switch and the Hi-Fi indicator goes off. Therefore, we
suggest that you leave the switch in the VHS/AUDIO HI-FI position unless you
want to override the hi-fi track priority.

This switch does not affect recording. The Model 42 always records both
hi-fi and regular audio tracks so that the tapes are compatible with any
VCR.
