In most cases the built-in telescopic antenna will provide good reception
for FM and TV. However, for the very best reception and/or to tune in a
weak station, you should use an external antenna. Connect such as antenna
to VHF or UHF antenna terminals as appropriate and set Antenna switch to
EXT. ANT. position. You'll find the following chart to be helpful as you
determine the best antenna to use.

NOTE: No. 1 With VHF reception, use the full length of the rod antenna
for best reception on channels 2 to 6, shorten the antenna for
channels 7 to 13.
NOTE: No. 2 When connecting an outdoor VHF antenna to the VHF external
terminals. do not connect an additional outdoor FM antenna
at the same time (the FM antenna may interfere with TV
reception). Usually, an outdoor FM antenna is not required.
Or, if you want good FM reception, obtain a TV/FM antenna
and connect it. Check your local Radio Shack store for
antenna suitable to your needs. You'll also find various
other useful accessories.
