Model 87 Double Azimuth 4-Head VHS VCR
(160-0525) Recording Faxback Doc. # 40522

There are four ways to record using your VCR - immediate recording,
quick-timer recording, automatic timer recording, and dubbing.

Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level. The video
cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection tab in
place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects if you
try to record on it.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official
VHS logo.

High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video
heads. This type of tape gives the best results.

Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use
T-120, or shorter length tape.

The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length
tapes at the three recording speeds.

Cassette Recording Speed T-60 T-120 T-160

If you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode.

3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch.

4. Press STOP to stop recording.

Power-Failure Auto-Rewind

If a power failure occurs when a video cassette is loaded, the VCR is in
the stop mode, and the fast-response system is activated, the VCR rewinds
to protect the tape for about 10 seconds after power is restored.

Before you make a recording, check the memory counter. If it shows a
negative reading, press BLANK SEARCH on the remote control, or press
MEMORY. Then, fast-forward the tape to 0H 00M 00S on the display to
position the tape as it was before the power failure.

QUICK TIMER RECORDING

Your VCR is capable of two types of quick timer recording (QTR) -
immediate and delayed.

You can set the QTR program on the TV screen or on the VCR display.
The instructions refer to the TV's on-screen display indicators.
Some of the indicators on the VCR's display vary slightly.

Immediate QTR starts recording immediately and stops at the time you
select.

Delayed QTR starts recording at the time you select within the following
24 hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, recording stops at the time you
select.

    Note:

You cannot use immediate QTR if the VCR is programmed for delayed QTR.

Immediate QTR

1. Insert a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over,
into the VCR. The VCR automatically turns on.

If a cassette is already in the VCR, press POWER to turn on the VCR.

2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
    3/4 switch.

If you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode.

3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control so that VCR appears on the display.

4. Press INPUT for the desired input.

5. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired
    recording speed.

6. Select the channel you want to record, or prepare the A/V source you
    want to record.

    Note:

The tuner does not affect A/V source recording.

7. Press QTR OFF TIME twice to begin recording. Then, press QTR OFF TIME
repeatedly until the VCR displays the desired recording end time
within the next 24 hours. You can set the end time only in 30-minute
increments within the next 24 hours.

To ensure that you record all the desired program, set the end time a
little later than the end of program.

Delayed QTR

1. Perform Steps 1-6 in "Immediate QTR."

2. Press QTR ON TIME repeatedly to display the desired start time
(08:00 AM, for example). You can set the start time only in
30-minute increments within the next 24 hours.

3. Press QTR OFF TIME repeatedly to display the desired QTR end time.

Be sure the press OFF TIME within about 10 seconds after you press
QTR ON TIME. Otherwise, the VCR leaves the QTR mode.

The VCR automatically turns off about 10 seconds after you set the VCR
    for delayed QTR.

    Note:

If you turn on the VCR manually, QTR is cancelled.

QTR Hints

QTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted, if the erase-
protection tab is removed, or if an automatic timer recording is in
    progress.

To cancel QTR during the delayed QTR standby time, press
PROG/QTR/CLEAR on the remote control or press EJECT on the VCR.

To cancel QTR in progress, press STOP or PROG/QTR/CLEAR.

You can change the QTR end time by pressing OFF TIME during the QTR
    standby time.

The VCR's power turns off at the end of QTR.

TAPE SPEED is active during QTR but should not be changed while the
    VCR records.

You cannot check automatic program timer settings during QTR. If the
dew protection system stops the VCR's operation, QTR is cancelled.

To temporarily stop the tape during QTR, press PAUSE/STILL.
Press PAUSE/STILL again or press RECORD to resume recording. If you
leave the VCR in the pause mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically
    stops.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end recording
while you are away. Your VCR has six program timers that let you record
on a specific day within a 1-year period (NORMAL), the same day every week
(WEEKLY), or once a day, the same time every day (DAILY). You can set
each program timer to record on a different channel and at a different
speed.

Automatic timer recording consists of two steps: setting the program timer
and making the automatic timer recording.

Setting the Program Timer

You must use the remote control to set the program timer.

Be sure you correctly set the clock before you use automatic timer
recording.

In the following example, Timer No. 2 is set to record Channel 10 from
9:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on July 9, 1992 at the SP speed.

1. Insert a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over, into the
    VCR. The VCR turns on.

If the cassette's erase-protection tab is removed, place a piece of
plastic tape over the hole to allow recording on the tape.

2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4
switch. Or, if you have a TV/monitor, set the monitor to the video
    mode.

3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control. The program timer menu appears
    on the TV screen.

5. Press 2 to select the timer setting.

6. Use the remote control's number buttons 1-6 to select the program
    number.

7. Use number buttons 1-3 to set the desired timer mode-NORMAL, WEEKLY,
or DAILY. (Press 1 to set NORMAL, for example.)

8. Use the number buttons to set the desired date.
    (Press 0, 7, 0, and 9 to set July 9, for example.)

    Precede single-digit entries with 0.

    Note:

If you accidentally set the timer to record on a date that is before
the VCR's clock, date, the VCR considers the set time, date, and day
of the week to be for next year. If you set the timer to record on
the same day as on the VCR's clock, but at an earlier time, the VCR
    does not keep the entry.

9. Use the number buttons to set the start time.
    (Press 0, 9, 0, and 0 to set 9:00, for example.)

10. Press 1 to set an a.m. hour or press 2 to set a.m. hour.

11. Press the number buttons to set the end time.
    (Press 1, 0, 3, and 0 to set 10:30, for example.)

12. Press 1 to set an a.m. hour or press 2 to set a p.m. hour.

13. Press the number buttons to select the channel number.
(Press 1 and 0 to select 10, for example.)

For A/V recording, enter 0 twice as the channel number.
    A/V appears on the display.

14. Press number buttons 1-3 to select the tape speed (SP, LP, or EP).
(Press 1 to select SP, for example.)

15. Double-check all the set information.

If it is correct, press PROG.

    If something is not correct,
    a. press PROG/QTR/CLEAR as needed to erase the wrong program number,
    b. enter the correct information, and
    c. press PROG.

The MENU display reappears.

To store other program(s), press 2 and repeat Steps 6-15.

16. Press PROG again to erase the MENU display.

Making an Automatic Timer Recording

After you set the automatic program timer(s), follow the steps below to
make the recording(s).

1. Be sure a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, is in
    the cassette compartment.

2. Press POWER to turn off the VCR. The timer indicator (SYMBOL) appears
on the display. This shows that the VCR is in the timer standby mode.
When a timer recording begins, the record indicator appears.

You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times,
but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power
is off at the set start time(s).

Automatic Timer Recording Hints

The VCR's power turns off at the end of an automatic timer recording.

If a power failure occurs or the VCR is unplugged for more than a few
seconds, the VCR loses the clock setting and all timer settings.

If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer
    recording, the recording is cancelled.

If two program times overlap, the one that starts first has priority.
When the first program ends, the VCR records the remainder of the
    second program.

If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette,
    the timer indicator flashes.

If the end of a tape is reached during an automatic timer recording,
    the VCR's power turns off.

Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording

To monitor an automatic timer recording, turn on the TV and set it to the
same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch. Press TV/VCR so that VCR
appears on the display. Or, if you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video
mode.

Checking Program Timers

Follow these steps to check a program timer.

1. Turn on the TV and set its tuner to the same channel as the VCR's
CHANNEL 3/4 switch. Or, if you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video
    mode.

2. Turn on the VCR and press TV/VCR on the remote control so that VCR
    appears on the display.

3. Press PROG. The MENU display appears on the TV screen.

4. Press 3 to select the PROGRAM CHECK/CLEAR mode.

5. Use number buttons 1-6 to select the program number that you want to
    check. The selected number flashes.

    clear. The selected number flashes.

3. Press PROG/QTR/CLEAR.

To select another program to clear, press the corresponding program
    number button and press PROG/QTR/CLEAR.

4. Press PROG to exit the PROGRAM CHECK/CLEAR mode. The MENU display
    reappears.

5. Press PROG again to erase the MENU display.

DUBBING

The process of recording from one VCR (playback VCR) to another
(recording VCR) is called dubbing.

You can use VHF signals to make such recordings, but separate audio/video
signals are preferred.

Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors.
Do not use standard audio patch cords.

You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with
A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR.

Connections for Dubbing

Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 87.

Dubbing a Video Cassette Tape

To dub a video cassette, do the following:

1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.

2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
    the Model 87's cassette compartment.

3. Press INPUT on the Model 87 so that AU appears on the display.

4. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired
recording speed (SP, LP, or EP).

5. Press RECORD on the Model 87.

6. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.

    Note:

For best results during dubbing, hold the Model 87's remote control
close to the Model 87's remote control receiver window (to the left of
the VCR display) when you press tape SPEED. Otherwise, the remote
control might affect the playback VCR's operation.

Monitoring Dubbing

Follow these steps to monitor dubbing.

1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 87, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 87's CHANNEL 3/4 switch.

2. Press TV/VCR on the remote control so that VCR appears on the display,
or set your TV monitor to the video mode.
