Model 53 4-Head Stereo Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0623) Recording Faxback Doc. # 39471

There are four ways to record using your VCR - immediate recording,
VCR Plus+ recording, automatic timer recording, and dubbing.

Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level.

The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection
tab in place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects if
you try to record on it. See "Operation," Faxback Doc. # 39470.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official
VHS logo.

High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video
heads. This type of tape gives the best results.

Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use T-120
or shorter length tape.

The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length
tapes at the three recording speeds.

Cassette Recording Speed T-60 T-120 T-160

SP 1 hour 2 hours 2/2/3 hours
                          (60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)

LP 2 hours 4 hours 5 1/3 hours
                          (120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes)

EP 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
                          (180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)

Power-Failure Auto-Rewind

If a power failure occurs when a video cassette is loaded, the VCR is in
the stop mode, and the fast-response system is activated, the VCR rewinds
or about 10 seconds after power is restored to protect the tape.

Before you make a recording, check the memory counter. If it shows a
negative reading, press MEMORY. Then, fast-forward the tape to 0H 00M 00S
on the display to position the tape as it was before the power failure.
See "Special Functions," Faxback Doc. # 39472.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end recording
while you are away. Your VCR has six program timers that let you record
on a specific day within a 1-year period (ONCE), the same day every week
(WEEKLY), or once a day, the same time every day (DAILY).

Setting the Program Timer

You must use the remote control to set the program timer.

Be sure you correctly set the clock before you use automatic timer
recording.

You can set each program timer to record on a different channel and at a
different speed.

Automatic timer recording consists of two steps:

setting the program timer and making the automatic timer recording.

In the following example, the VCR is set to record Channel 10 from 9:00 pm
to 10:30 pm on March 9, 1993 at the EP speed.

1. Insert a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over, into the
    VCR. The VCR turns on.

If the cassette's erase-protection tab is removed, place a piece of
plastic tape over the hole to allow recording on the tape.

2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's
    CHANNEL 3/4 switch.

If you have a TV/monitor, set the monitor to the video mode.

3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR appears on the display.

    Precede single-digit entries with 0.

    Note:

If you accidentally set the timer to record on a date that is before
the VCR's clock date, the VCR considers the set time, date, and day of
the week to be for next year. If you set the timer to record on the
same day as on the VCR's clock, but at any earlier time, the VCR does
    not keep the entry.

7. Use the number buttons to set the start time.
    (Press 0, 9, 0, and 0 to set 9:00.)

    Precede single-digit entries with 0.

8. Press 1 to set an am hour or press 2 to set a pm hour.

When a timer recording begins, the record indicator (SYMBOL) appears.

    Note:

You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times,
but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power
is off at the set start time(s).

Automatic Timer Recording Hints

The VCR's power turns off at the end of an automatic timer recording.

If two program times overlap, the one that starts first has priority.
When the first program ends, the VCR records the remainder of the
    second program.

If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette,
    the timer indicator (SYMBOL) flashes.

If the end of a tape is reached during an automatic timer recording,
    the VCR's power turns off.

Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording

RECORDING WITH VCR Plus+

SETTING THE VCR Plus+ GUIDE CHANNELS

The VCR Plus+* feature lets you program timer recordings in one simple
step using the Plus-Codes listed in your TV listing. However, before you
can use the VCR Plus+ feature, you must set the VCR Plus+ guide channels.
Setting the VCR Plus+ guide channels makes it possible for your VCR to
recognize and read the channel numbers in the Plus Codes. This is
necessary because the channel numbers used in some areas (especially cable
TV channels) might be different from the channel numbers already stored in
the VCR Plus+ memory.

Most TV listings and cable TV guides have a chart that shows the channel
numbers that have been assigned to cable and broadcast channels for use
with VCR Plus+. These are called the guide channels (also referred to as
VCR Plus Assigned Channel Numbers). To determine the guide channel number
used in your area, refer to your local TV listing or cable TV guide.

Follow these instructions before you begin setting the VCR Plus+
Guide Channels:

Be sure the antenna or cable TV system is properly connected to the
VCR. Check all TV and VCR connections. (See "Connections," Faxback
    Doc. # 39468.)

Be sure the VCR's clock is set correctly. The VCR Plus+ feature will
not operate if the clock is not set correctly.
(See "Preparation," Faxback Doc. # 39469.)

Program all available channels in your area.

Set the VCR Plus+ guide channels as follows:

If you use the basic antenna or cable connection, and your cable
service does not require an external cable box, follow the steps in
    Case A.

If your cable service requires an external cable box or if you receive
scrambled channels, follow the steps in Case B.

After you have set the VCR Plus+ guide channels, you are ready to use the
VCR Plus+ feature to program your timer recordings.

    Note:

You will only need to set the VCR Plus+ guide channels once.
The channels stay in memory even if the VCR's power is interrupted
    for an extended time period.

TIMER RECORDING WITH VCR Plus+

If CASE B (you are using an external cable box or receiving scrambled
channels) applies to you;

    Cautions:

You must be aware of the following before programming timer recordings
    with VCR Plus+.

The cable box must be on. In this case, the Model 53 operates as
        a timer only.

Before programming a PlusCode timer recording, you must set the

record, you have entered the wrong PlusCode number. Check the
PlusCode listing and re-enter the PlusCode number.

DUBBING

The process of recording from one VCR (playback VCR) to another
(recording VCR) is called dubbing.

You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V
outputs in place of the playback VCR.

Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors.
Do not use standard audio patch cords.

CONNECTIONS FOR DUBBING

Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO IN jacks on the Model 53.

If the playback VCR is mono, connect its audio output to the Model 53's
L AUDIO INPUT jack.

Using A/V IN FRONT/REAR

To select the audio and video input signals from the AUDIO/VIDEO INPUT
jacks on the front panel, set A/V IN FRONT/REAR on the VCR to FRONT.

To select the rear input jacks, set A/V IN FRONT/REAR on the VCR to REAR.

DUBBING A VIDEO CASSETTE TAPE

To dub a video cassette, do the following:

1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.

2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
    the Model 53's cassette compartment.

3. Set A/V IN FRONT/REAR to the desired position.
(In this case, set to FRONT.)

4. Press INPUT on the Model 53 until AU appears on the display.

5. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired
recording speed (SP, LP, or EP).

6. Press RECORD on the Model 53.

7. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.

    Note:

For best results during dubbing, hold the Model 53's remote control
close to the Model 53's remote control receiver window (to the left of
the VCR display) when you press TAPE SPEED. Otherwise, the remote
control might affect the playback VCR's operation.

MONITORING DUBBING

Follow these steps to monitor dubbing.

1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 53, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 53's CHANNEL 3/4 switch.

2. Press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR appears on the display,
or set your TV monitor to the video mode.

RECORDING SIMULCASTS

During a simulcast, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the
radio while the TV program is shown. Some cable companies use simulcasts
for stereo programs, but the radio signal is transmitted through the cable
wire instead of the air.

Use the following steps to record the stereo programs.

1. Connect your stereo receiver's tape-out jacks to your VCR's
    AUDIO INPUT jacks.

2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo receiver.

3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the VCR's
    cassette compartment.

4. Set A/V IN FRONT/REAR to the desired position.

5. Press INPUT until SC appears on the display.

6. Press TAPE SPEED to display the desired recording speed.

7. Tune the receiver to the proper radio station.

8. Use CHANNEL Down or Up Arrow or the remote control's number buttons to
    select the proper channel.

9. Press RECORD to record the program.

AUDIO-ONLY RECORDING

Because of the superior quality of VHS hi-fi audio recordings, you might
want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the
audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to
the VCR's AUDIO INPUT jacks.

You can also make live recordings by connecting a preamplifier or mixer to
the VCR's AUDIO INPUT jacks. However, do not directly connect a
microphone to the VCR.

    Note:

You must disconnect the VCR's VIDEO INPUT jack before you make an
    audio-only recording.
