Fast-Response System

When you load a video cassette with its erase-protection tab intact, the
VCR positions the tape next to the record/playback head for about 5
minutes. Within this period, you can start playback, recording, or any
other tape motion the moment you press the appropriate button. This is
useful any time you need a precise start for playback or recording.

When you stop a tape during playback, recording, rewind, or fast-forward,
the tape remains positioned next to the record/playback head for about
5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the fast-response system releases to protect
the tape.

Automatic Playback, Rewind, and Eject

When you load a cassette with the erase-protection tab removed, playback
begins automatically.

When the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or
fast-forward, the VCR automatically rewinds to the beginning of the
tape. If the erase-protection tab has been removed, the cassette ejects.

If the memory function is activate, the tape stops at OH OOM OOS but
does not eject. (See "Real-Time Counter with Memory.")

Tape Motion Display

The tape motion display shows you the tape motion during tape playback
or recording.

recording, the VCR automatically exits the recording mode.

temporarily stops. Press PAUSE/STILL again or RECORD to resume recording.

Real-Time Counter With Memory

Your VCR's counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape
count. Use the counter and memory functions to mark and return to
specific locations on a tape.

NOTE: The counter uses special signals on a recorded tape. Therefore,
the counter does not work blank tape or blank portions of
       partially recorded tapes.

When you load a cassette, the counter resets to O H O O M O O S on the
display. As the tape plays, the counter displays the run time. If
you rewind the tape past the zero point, the display shows the time
with a minus (-) sign.

To mark and return to a point on a tape:

1. Press RESET on the remote control when you reach the location to
which you want to return. The counter displays O H OO M OO S.
    Continue recording or playback.

2. When you want to return to the selected location, press MEMORY
until M appears on the display.

3. Press STOP and then REWIND or FAST-F. The tape rewinds and then
automatically stops at O H OO M OO S on the display.

When the VCR is stopped, press FAST-F or REWIND to quickly fast-forward or
rewind the tape. Use the counter to locate a specific section on the
tape. When the counter shows the approximate location, press FAST-F
or REWIND again to begin visual search. The VCR plays the tape at a
faster than normal speed so you can find the exact section you want
to view.

NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display for visual search.

During visual search, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture
quality is lower than during normal playback. The visual
search picture is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP
        speed.

You can alternate between fast-forward and rewind visual search by
repeatedly pressing FAST-F or REWIND.

You can also press FAST-F or REWIND during playback to begin a visual
search.

program or skips to the beginning of the next program, and then starts
playback.

NOTE: Model 55 automatically records an index signal at the beginning
of the recording. If, you play back a tape recorded on a VCR
that does not have this feature, the index search function does
       not operate.

While in the stop or play mode, press INDEX on the remote control.
Then press FAST-F or REWIND.

Slow Motion

For programs recorded at the SP or EP speed, you can press SLOW on the
remote control to reduce the playback speed to 1/10 of its normal speed.
The VCR mutes the sound during slow-motion play.

Press PLAY to return to normal playback.

NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes, the
VCR automatically stops and exits the playback mode.

If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking control.
        See "Tracking Control."

press PAUSE/STILL. Press and hold down TRACKING DOWN ARROW or
UP ARROW, and then press SLOW.

Freeze-Frame lets you stop the tape and view a single frame.

Press PAUSE/STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PLAY
to return to normal playback.

NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes,
the VCR automatically stops and exits the playback mode.

If a horizontal bar appears during freeze-frame, adjust the
tracking in the slow-motion mode. See "Slow Motion."

To reduce or eliminate jitter in the freeze-frame picture of an
SP or EP speed recording, press and hold down TRACKING DOWN ARROW
        or UP ARROW.

During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than during normal
playback. The picture quality is best with recordings made at the SP
or EP speed.

Frame Advance

During the freeze-frame mode, you can advance the picture one frame
at a time by pressing PAUSE/STILL. This feature works best with video
cassettes recorded at the SP or EP speed.
