Model 55 4-Head Stereo Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0625) Recording Faxback Doc. # 39464
Recording
There are four ways to record using your VCR - immediate recording,
automatic timer recording, quick timer recording (QTR), and dubbing
(copying).
The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection
tab in place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects
if you try to record on it. See "Care and Maintenance," Faxback Doc.
# 39467.
NOTE: Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level.
Tape Selection
The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official
VHS logo.
High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty
video heads. This type of tape gives the best results.
Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use
T-120 or shorter length tape.
The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-
length tapes at the three recording speeds.
Cassette T-60 T-120 T-160
Recording
Speed
SP 1 hour 2 hours 2 2/3 hours
(60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)
LP 2 hours 4 hours 5 1/3 hours
(120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes)
EP 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
(180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)
Power-Failure Auto-Rewind
If a power failure occurs when a video cassette is loaded, the VCR is
in the stop mode, and the fast-response system is activated, the VCR
rewinds for about 10 seconds after power is restored to protect the
tape.
Before you make a recording, check the memory counter. If it shows a
negative reading, press MEMORY. Then fast-forward the tape to O H OO
M OO S on the display to position the tape as it was before the power
failure. See "Special Functions," Faxback Doc. # 39465.
Immediate Recording
You can record the same program you watch or record one program while
you watch another. If you have connected an antenna or cable as described
in "Connections," Faxback Doc. # 39461.
NOTE: If you want to record from another VCR, a laser disc player,
or other source with A/V outputs, see "Dubbing."

Automatic Timer Recording
Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end
recording while you are away. Your VCR has six program timers that
let you record on a specific day within 1-year period (ONCE), the same
day every week (WEEKLY), or once a day at the same time every day
(DAILY).
Each program timer can be set to record on a different channel and at a
different speed.
Making an Automatic Timer Recording
You must use the remote control to set the program timer. Make sure you
correctly set the clock before setting an automatic timer recording.
NOTE: You must use a tape that has its erase-protection tab in place.
If it has been removed, put a piece of heavy tape over the hole.
In the following example, the VCR is set to record Channel 10 from 9:00
PM to 10:30 PM on November 9, 1993 at the EP speed.
1. Insert a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over, into
the VCR. The VCR turns on.
2. If you plan to record an MTS broadcast, set the MTS switch on the
VCR as desired.
3. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
3/4 switch.
If you use a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode.
4. Press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR appears on the display,
5. Press PROGRAM on the remote control. The program timer menu appears
on the TV screen.
6. Press 2 to select the timer setting.
7. Use the number buttons to set the desired date. (Press 1, 1, 0, and
9 to set November 9.) Precede single-digit entries with 0.
NOTE: If you accidentally set the timer to record on a date that is
before the VCR's clock date, the VCR considers the set time,
date, and day of the week to be for next year. If you set the
timer to record on the same day as on the VCR's clock, but at
an earlier time, the VCR does not keep the entry.
8. Use the number buttons to set the start time. (Press 0, 9, 0, and
0 to set 9:00.) Precede single-digit entries with 0.
9. Press 1 to set an AM hour or press 2 to set a PM hour. (Press 2
to set PM.)
10. Press the number buttons to set the end time. (Press 1, 0, 3, and
0 to set 10:30.)
11. Press 1 to set an AM hour or press 2 to set a PM hour.
12. Press the number buttons to select the channel number. (Press
1 and 0 to select 10.)
13. Press 0 twice if you want to set an A/V recording.
NOTE: For a regular recording, perform Step 12 and skip Step 13.
For A/V recording, skip Steps 12 and perform Step 13.
14. Press TAPE SPEED to select the tape speed (SP, LP, or EP). (Press
TAPE SPEED to select EP.)
15. Use number buttons 1-3 to set the desired timer mode - ONCE,
DAILY, or WEEKLY. (Press 1 to set ONCE.)
16. Double-check all the set information.
If it is correct, press PROGRAM.
If it is not correct, press CLEAR as needed to erase the wrong
program number. Enter the correct information, and then press
PROGRAM.
NOTE; You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set
times, but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s)
only if the power is off at the set start time(s).
The menu display reappears.
To store other program(s), press 2 and repeat Steps 7-16.
17. Press PROGRAM again to exit the menu display.
18. Press POWER to turn off the VCR. The timer indicator (symbol)
appears on the display. This shows that the VCR is in the timer
standby mode. When a timer recording begins, the record indicator
(symbol) appears.
Automatic Timer Recording Tips:
The VCR's power automatically turns off at the end of an automatic timer
recording.
If two program times overlap, the one that starts first has priority.
When the first program ends, the VCR records the reminder of the second
program.
If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette,
the timer indicator (symbol) flashes.
If the end of a tape is reached during an automatic timer recording,
the VCR's power turns off.
Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording
To monitor an automatic timer recording, turn on the TV and set it

Quick Timer Recording
Your VCR is capable of two types of quick timer recording (QTR) -
immediate and delayed.
You can set the QTR program on the TV screen or on the VCR's display.
The instructions below refer to the TV's on-screen display indicators.
Some of the instructors on the VCR's display vary slightly.
Immediate QTR starts recording immediately and stops at the time you
select. Delayed QTR starts recording at the time you select within the
following 24 hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, recording stops at
the time you select.
NOTES: For proper QTR recording, be sure the VCR's clock is correctly
set.
You cannot use immediate QTR if the VCR is programmed for delayed
QTR.
Immediate QTR
1. Insert a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over,
into the VCR. The VCR automatically turns on.
If a cassette is already in the VCR, press POWER to turn on the
VCR.
2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
3/4 switch.
If you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode.
3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control so VCR appears on the display.
4. Press INPUT to select the signal you want to record.
5. If you want to record an MTS broadcast, set the MTS switch as desired.
6. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired
recording speed.
7. Press CHANNEL DOWN ARROW or UP ARROW or use the remote's number
buttons to select the desired channel.
8. Press QTR OFF TIME twice to begin recording. Then, press QTR OFF TIME
repeatedly until the VCR displays the desired recording end time
within the next 24 hours. You can set the end time only in 30-minute
increments within the next 24 hours.
To ensure that you record all of the desired program, set the end time
a little later than the end of the program.
Delayed QTR
1. Perform Steps 1-7 in "Immediate QTR."
2. Press QTR ON TIME repeatedly to display the desired start time (08:00
AM, for example). You can set the start time only in 30-minute
increments within the next 24 hours.
3. Press QTR OFF TIME repeatedly to display the desired QTR and time.
Be sure to press QTR OFF TIME within about 10 seconds after you press
QTR ON TIME. Otherwise, the VCR exits the QTR mode.
The VCR automatically turns off about 10 seconds after you set the VCR
for delayed QTR.
NOTE: If you turn on the VCR manually, QTR is cancelled.
QTR Hints:
QTR cannot function if a video cassette is not inserted. If the erase-
protection tab is removed, or if an automatic timer recording is in
progress.
To cancel QTR during the delayed QTR standby time, press CLEAR on the
remote control or press EJECT on the VCR.
To cancel a QTR in progress, press STOP or CLEAR.
You can change the QTR end time by pressing QTR OFF TIME during the
QTR standby time.
The VCR's power turns off at the end of QTR.
TAPE SPEED is active during QTR. Do not change the tape speed while
the VCR records.
You cannot check automatic program timer settings during QTR.
To temporarily stop the tape during QTR, press PAUSE/STILL. Press
PAUSE/STILL again or press RECORD to resume recording. If you leave
the VCR in the pause mode for 5 minutes, the VCR automatically exits
QTR.
Recording Simulcasts
During a simulcast, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the
radio at the same time that the TV program is shown.
Follow these steps to record a stereo simulcast.
1. Connect your stereo receiver's audio output jacks to your VCR's AUDIO
IN jacks using shielded A/V cables with phono connectors.
2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo receiver.
3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the VCR's
cassette compartment.
4. Press INPUT until SC appears on the display.
5. Press TAPE SPEED to display the desired recording speed.
6. Tune the receiver to the radio station.
7. Use CHANNEL DOWN ARROW OR UP ARROW on the remote control's number
buttons to select the TV channel.
8. Press RECORD to record the program.
Audio-Only Recording
Because of the superior quality of VHS Hi-Fi audio recordings, you might
want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the
audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to
the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks, and press INPUT so the display shows AU.
NOTES: You must disconnect the VCR's VIDEO IN jack before you make
an audio-only recording.
Use shielded A/V cables with phono connectors for the best
results.
You can also make live recordings by connecting a preamplifier or
mixer to the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. However, do not directly connect
a microphone to the VCR.
Dubbing
The process of recording from one VCR (playback VCR) to another (recording
VCR) is called dubbing.
You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V
outputs in place of the playback VCR.
Connections for Dubbing
Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO IN jacks on the Model 55, as shown below.
Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors
for dubbing connections. Do not use standard audio patch cords.
If the playback VCR is mono, connect its audio output to the Model
55's L AUDIO IN jack.
Dubbing a Video Cassette Tape
NOTE: For best results during dubbing, hold the Model 55's remote
control close to the Model 55's remote control receiver window
(to the left of the VCR display) when you press TAPE SPEED.
Otherwise, the remote control might affect the playback VCR's
operation.
1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.
2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
the Model 55's cassette compartment.
3. Press INPUT on the Model 55 until AU appears on the display.
4. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired
recording speed (SP, LP, or EP).
5. Press RECORD on the Model 55.
6. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.
Monitoring Dubbing
Follow these steps to monitor dubbing.
1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 55, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 55's CHANNEL 3/4 switch.
2. Press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR appears on the display,
or set your TV/monitor to the video mode.
