(160-0625) Operation Faxback Doc. # 39463
VIEWING TV
Viewing TV using the TV's Tuner
Turn off the VCR, or press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR
does not appear on the VCR's display. The antenna or cable signals
pass through the VCR unaffected, as if the antenna or cable were connected
directly to the TV. Use the TV as you normally would.
NOTE: If you use a TV/monitor, set it to the TV mode.
Viewing TV using the VCR's Tuner
1. Turn on the VCR and the TV.
2. Press TV/VCR until VCR appears on the VCR's display.
3. Select a channel using the VCR's tuner.
Playing a Tape
Follow these steps to play a pre-recorded tape.
1. Turn on the TV.
2. Set the TV's tuner to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4
switch-either 3 or 4. See "Preparation," Faxback Doc. # 39462.
If you use a TV/monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT
jacks, set it to the video mode. See "Connections," Faxback Doc. # 39461.
3. Press TV/VCR so VCR appears on the display.
CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the
cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal
mechanisms.
NOTE: If you press PLAY, FAST-F, or REWIND when the VCR is off or in the
timer recording stand-by mode, the power automatically turns on and
the function begins.
NOTE: You can press EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The
VCR's power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects, then
automatically turns off.
4. Hold the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label
facing out from the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the
compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine
until the VCR completely draws it in.
The VCR automatically turns on and the tape indicator (symbol) lights.
If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, play-
back automatically begins. See "Care and Maintenance," Faxback Doc.
# 39467.
5. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY.
6. Press STOP to stop playback before the end of the tape.
7. Press EJECT on the VCR to eject the cassette.
If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP, the VCR automatically
stops the tape and completely rewinds it. If the erase-protection
tab has been removed, the VCR ejects the cassette after the tape fully
rewinds.
Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs
The CHANNEL 3/4, MTS, TV/VCR, INPUT, and AUDIO OUT controls select the
input and output signals of your VCR. This section explains how to use
these switches and buttons to choose the signals you watch, record, and
hear.
How the VCR's Tuner Works
The VCR's 179-channel PLL tuner is active when you turn on the VCR,
set TV/VCR to VCR, and set INPUT to the tuner mode. The tuner has
two functions:
It lets you select what the VCR records.
It lets you select the VCR's output when VCR appears on the VCR's
display (when the VCR is neither playing nor recording a tape).
The tuner has no effect on recording or VCR output when you set INPUT
to the A/V mode or when the power is off. See "Using INPUT."
Using INPUT
NOTES: The input selection affects the VHF/UHF OUT signals only when you
press TV/VCR until VCR appears on the display.
INPUT has no effect during tape playback, when you have set TV/VCR
to TV, or when the VCR is turned off.
To view the signal sent from the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks to a
TV/monitor, set the TV/monitor to the video mode.
Press INPUT to select the signals you record and send to the VCR's AUDIO/
VIDEO OUT jacks. The VCR displays the channel number (and C if you select
CATV) when you select the tuner, the channel number and SC when you select
a simulcast, or AU when you select the signals from the AUDIO/VIDEO IN
jacks.
INPUT MODE VCR DISPLAY VIDEO SOURCE AUDIO SOURCE
Tuner Channel Tuner Channel Tuner Channel
Number
Simulcast SC and Channel Tuner Channel Audio Input
Audio/Video AU Video Input Audio Input
Stereo and SAP Broadcasts
The MTS (multichannel television sound) decoder built into your VCR's
tuner automatically shows when the VCR receives stereo or SAP (special
audio program) signals.
ST appears on the display when the VCR receives a stereo signal.
SAP appears on the display when the VCR receives a SAP signal with a
mono main signal.
ST and SAP appear on the display when the VCR receives a SAP signal
with a stereo main signal.
Setting the MTS Switch
NOTES: The MTS setting has no effect on A/V, SIML, or mono broadcast
signals.
If you set the MTS switch to MONO, the recorded signal is mono,
even if ST appears on the VCR's display.
When you play back a tape that was recorded using regular stereo
signals (not Hi-Fi) or when you select NOT (a normal track) using
AUDIO OUT, you hear only monaural signals.
Standard (non-Hi-Fi) VCRs record audio signals on a separate
track from the video signals. Hi-Fi VCRs record audio signals
on the same track as video signals. To make recordings that
are compatible with standard VCR's the Model 55 records audio
signals on both the video and regular audio tracks.
Set the VCR's MTS switch as follows to select the audio signal you record.

SAP MTS Stereo+SAP L+R SAP SAP
STEREO MTS Stereo+SAP L R L+R
Using AUDIO OUT
To select the sound you hear during recording or playback, press AUDIO
OUT on the remote control. This button is especially useful when you
recorded the main signal on the left channel and a different SAP signal
on the right channel.
The AUDIO OUT indicators light and Hi-Fi appears on the display for the
VHF/audio settings shown in the following chart.
AUDIO AUDIO Hi-Fi VHF OUTPUT AUDIO
OUT OUT Indicator OUTPUT
Setting Indicator
ST (Stereo) LEFT and On Left and Right Left channel
RIGHT On channels from L output,

L (Left) LEFT On On Left channel Left channel

outputs
R (Right) RIGHT On On Right channel Right channel
only from L and R
outputs
NOR Off Off Regular audio Regular audio
(Normal) track track from L
and R outputs
NOTES: AUDIO OUT has no effect on recording.
When you use the NOR position of AUDIO OUT, you listen to the
playback from the regular (non-Hi-Fi) audio track.
If you play a recorded SAP broadcast with AUDIO OUT set to NOR,
you hear only monaural SAP signals.
If you play a tape recorded on a standard VCR, the Model 55 plays
the regular (non-Hi-Fi) audio track, regardless of the AUDIO OUT
setting. The Hi-Fi indicator does not light and the sound does
not change.
