(160-0625) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 39462

Installing the Remote Control Batteries

The remote control requires two AA batteries (not included) for operation.
We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552).

1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing it in the direction
    of the arrow.

2. Place two fresh AA batteries in the compartment as indicated by the
polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside it.

3. Replace the cover.

CAUTION: Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type.

NOTE: If the remote control does not work or operates erratically,
       replace both batteries.

Setting the Channel 3/4 Switch

Set the VCR's channel switch (on the back of the VCR) to channel 3 or 4,
whichever is not an active channel in your area.

When VCR appears on the display, the VCR sends the selected video source
signal from the VCR's VHF/UHF OUT terminal to the TV on the channel you
set. These signals are also sent to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks.

The CHANNEL 3/4 switch has no effect on the TV when the VCR is off, when
VCR does not appear on the display, or if you are using a TV/monitor
(with audio/video input jacks) set to the video mode.

Using TV/CATV

If you have cable service and use a cable box between the cable wire
and the VCR, press TV/CATV on the VCR until C does not appear on the
display. Or, if you do not have cable service and want to receive
up to 68 VHF/UHF channels, press TV/CATV on the VCR until C does not
appear on the display.

If you have cable service and the cable wire is connected directly to the
VCR without a cable box, press TV/CATV until C appears on the display.

Using the Remote Control

Some of the remote control's buttons are duplicated on the VCR's front
panel. You can use these buttons to perform identical procedures either
at the VCR or by remote control. These special-function buttons appear
only on the remote control.

button(s).

Setting the On-Screen Programming Language and Clock

Use the remote control to select the on-screen programming language and
set the clock.

You must set the clock accurately for proper automatic timer recording.
We suggest you refer to a TV or radio station to obtain the correct time.

NOTE: If you use a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode before you set
       the clock.

In the following example, the clock is set to 9:30 PM November 7, 1993.

1. Press POWER to turn on the VCR.

2. Turn on your TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
3/4 switch (see "Setting the Channel 3/4 Switch"). Then press TV/VCR
on the remote control until VCR appears on the VCR's display. The
TV screen shows a blue display.

3. Press PROGRAM on the remote control.

If you are setting the clock after plugging in the VCR, the language
selection menu automatically appears on the TV screen. Go to Step 4.

If you are not setting the clock for the first time after plugging
in the VCR, the menu display appears on the TV screen. Press 1 to
enter the clock-setting mode and go to Step 4.

4. To select English as the on-screen language, press 1: French, press
2; Spanish, press 3. All on-screen prompts now appear in the
    selected language.

5. Press the remote control's number buttons to set the correct hour
    and minute. (Press 0, 9, 3, and 0 to set 9:30.)

Precede a single-digit entry with 0. If you press a wrong number
button, press CLEAR and then press the correct button.

6. Press 1 to select AM or press 2 to select PM. Your VCR uses an AM/PM
    clock.

7. Press the number buttons to set the correct date. (Press 1, 1, 0,
    7, 9, and 3 to set November 7, 1993.)

The date and the corresponding day of the week appear on the screen.

8. Review the entered information.

If it is correct, press PROGRAM. The clock-setting mode display
disappears and the VCR display changes to the correct clock display.

If the information is not correct, press CLEAR as necessary to erase
the wrong information. Then enter the correct information. Press
    PROGRAM to store the information.

NOTES: If you enter an invalid date or time (13:00, for example),
? flashes. Enter the correct date or time.

Seconds begin counting at 00 when you press PROGRAM after
            you set the date.

Standard Daylight Time Adjustment

You can easily set the clock for daylight saving time (add one hour)
or standard time (subtract one hour) using STANDARD/DAYLIGHT inside
the VCR's front compartment.

Insert the tip of a ballpoint pen into STANDARD/DAYLIGHT and press gently.
Each time you press, one hour is added to or subtracted from the current
time.

Using All CLEAR

If the display shows an abnormal reading or no reading, press ALL CLEAR
on the VCR with a ballpoint pen. Then repeat Steps 1-8 in "Setting the
On-Screen Programming Language and Clock" to reset the clock.

CAUTION: Press ALL CLEAR only as a last resort because doing so resets
the VCR and deletes the clock setting and all timer recordings
stored in the Model 55's memory.

Memory Sentinel

Your VCR has a special Memory Sentinel feature that protects clock
settings, timer programming information, and timer memory settings by
providing up to 1 hour of backup power in case a power failure occurs
or if the power cord accidentally becomes unplugged. After about 1
hour of no power, the VCR loses all these settings.

Programming the Tuner's Memory

You can program the tuner's memory so when you press CHANNEL DOWN ARROW
or UP ARROW, the VCR's tuner scans only the active channels in your
area.

Press and hold CH PROG on the remote control and then press AUTO. The
VCR's tuner scans through all the antenna or cable channels in your
area and memorizes them. After scanning all the channels, the tuner
stops on the lower-numbered active channel.

Press CHANNEL DOWN ARROW or UP ARROW to check the memory's contents.
If the tuner stores a channel that you do not want, tune to that
channel and press and hold CH PROG on the remote control and then press
ERASE. The channel number blinks on the VCR's display to show that the
unwanted channel is erased from the tuner's memory.

NOTES: If the AC cord is unplugged or a power failure occurs for more
than about 1 hour, the tuner might lose the information in
        memory.

You can directly select channels that are not in the tuner's
memory using the remote control's number buttons.

Channel Selection

There are three methods of channel selection - manual, auto-scan, and
direct. Before you select a channel, set TV/CATV to the desired band
(see "Using TV/CATV").

To manually select a channel, press CHANNEL DOWN ARROW or UP ARROW.
The tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel in
the direction of the button's arrow.

If you press CHANNEL UP ARROW when the tuner is at the highest programmed
channel, the tuner returns to the lowest programmed channel. If you
press CHANNEL DOWN ARROW when the tuner is at the lowest programmed
channel, the tuner returns to the highest programmed channel.

To directly select a channel, press the remote control's number buttons
for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit channel numbers with
0-01, 02, 03, and so on. For three-digit channel numbers, press 100.
Then enter the second and third digits in the channel number.

NOTES: If you enter a valid but inactive channel number, you see the
blue screen. The blue screen remains until you enter an active
        channel number.

If you enter an invalid channel number, F (fail) appears briefly
on the VCR's display and the channel remains on its current
        setting.

Cable Channel Designation

Your VCR can receive up to 111 cable channels. The VCR displays the
channels as 1-125.

Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable companies
usually number them as they appear on the display.

However, cable companies often designate other cable channels with letters
or letter-number combinations. The following chart shows common cable
designations.
