FUNCTION INDICATORS

When you press a function button, the selected function indicator appears
on the TV screen for about 3 seconds to confirm your selection.

Example: If you press PLAY, PLAY appears on the TV screen for about 3
          seconds.

When you select a different channel, the selected channel number appears
on the TV screen for about 3 seconds.

Example: If you select Channel 32, 32 appears on the TV screen for about
          3 seconds.

NOTE: If you play back tapes that contain a high level of noise, the
function or channel number does not appear on the VCR's display.

Press ON SCREEN to display all the information of your VCR's current
operation mode on the TV screen. Press ON SCREEN a second time to
display the counter only. Press ON SCREEN again to return to the
normal picture.

When you set a QTR, the start and stop times of the QTR appear on the TV
screen.

VHS INDEX SEARCH SYSTEM

When you start a recording, your VCR automatically marks the tape with
an index signal and DPSS ENTER flashes on the VCR's display.

The VCR can search for up to 9 index signals. We recommend that you list
the index numbers for the recordings on the VHS cassette box.

The index search function advances or rewinds a tape directly to the
beginning of a desired recording by locating the recording's index
signal. If there are several recordings on a tape, index search skips
the undesired recordings to locate the desired recording. Follow these
steps to use index search.

1. Count the number of recordings you want to skip.

If you want to search forward, count the next recording as the first
    recording you skip.

If you search backward, count the current recording as the first
    recording you skip.

2. While in the stop or play mode, press DPSS > (to search forward) or
DPSS < (to search backward) on the remote control repeatedly until
the number of the recording you want to skip appears on the TV's
    screen.

Search starts immediately as you release the button. When the VCR detects
an index signal, the counter display reduces by one. When the counter
reaches the number of recordings you specified to skip, the search stops
and playback automatically starts.

VARIABLE SPEED SLOW-MOTION

For programs recorded at the SP or EP speed, press SLOW on the remote
control to reduce the playback speed. The VCR mutes the sound during
slow-motion.

You can use SLOW UP ARROW or SLOW DOWN ARROW to vary the slow-motion
speed from 1/5 to 1/30 of the normal playback speed.

Press PLAY to return to normal playback.

NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes,
the VCR automatically switches back to playback mode.

If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking control.
        See "Manual Tracking Control."

FREEZE-FRAME

Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape and view a single frame.

Press PAUSE/STILL on the remote control during playback to freeze the
picture. Press PAUSE/STILL or PLAY to return to normal playback.

During freeze-frame, the picture is lower quality than during normal
playback. However, the picture is best with recordings made at the SP
or EP speed.

NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, the
VCR automatically switches back to playback mode.

If the picture jitters during freeze-frame, adjust the v-lock
by pressing CH DOWN ARROW/UP ARROW on the remote control or
        V-LOCK -/+ in the VCR's compartment.

FRAME ADVANCE

During the freeze-frame mode (pause/still), you can advance the picture
one frame at a time by pressing F-ADV on the remote control. This feature
works best with video cassettes recorded at the SP or EP speed.

RECORD PAUSE

Use PAUSE/STILL on the remote control during recording to edit unwanted
material, such as commercials.

Press PAUSE/STILL at the beginning of the unwanted material. The tape
temporarily stops. Press PAUSE/STILL again to resume recording.

NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the pause mode for 5 minutes during
        recording, the VCR automatically stops.

PAUSE/STILL does not function during automatic timer recording.

AUTO TRACKING SYSTEM

The auto tracking system automatically adjusts the tracking when you
start playback. The TRACKING indicator flashes while the system is in
operation.

When the tape has parts recorded at different speeds, the VCR
automatically re-adjusts the tracking at the beginning of each portion.

If you need further adjustments, see "Manual Tracking Control."

MANUAL TRACKING CONTROL

If the VCR's picture is poor, press and hold down CH DOWN ARROW/UP ARROW
on the remote control or TRACKING -/+ in the VCR compartment as needed,
to adjust the picture during tape playback. Press both UP ARROW and DOWN
ARROW or - and + to re-activate the automatic tracking system.

NOTES: If the sound of a recording made on another VHS hi-fi VCR is
poor, you might improve the sound by adjusting the tracking
control. If tracking is incorrect, the L/R indicators do not
        appear on the display.

You might need to readjust the control for each tape you load.

QUICK-MOTION

When you play a tape, press x2 on the remote control to double the
playback speed.

During quick-motion, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture is lower in
quality than during normal playback. The picture is best with recordings
made at the EP speed.

Press PLAY to return to normal playback speed.

AUTOMATIC PLAYBACK AND REWIND

When you load a cassette with the erase-protection tab removed, playback
begins automatically.

When the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or
fast-forward, the VCR automatically rewinds to the beginning of the
tape and then ejects cassette and turns off the power.

REAL-TIME COUNTER WITH MEMORY

Your VCR's counter shows the actual tape run time, not a reference tape
count. Press DISPLAY until the counter appears on the VCR's display.

Use the counter and zero back functions to mark and return to specific
locations on a tape. To use the counter most effectively, completely
rewind tapes before you play them. Then press CANCEL to set the counter
to 0:00.00. As the tape plays, the counter displays the run time.
If you rewind the tape past the zero point, the display shows the time
with a minus (-) sign.

To use the zero back function, follow these steps.

1. Press CANCEL on the remote control at the location you want to return
    to. The counter displays 0:00.00.

2. When you want to return to the selected location, press ZERO
BACK. The tape rewinds or fast-forwards and automatically stops
    at 0:00.00 on the display.

NOTES: The counter uses special signals on a recorded tape.
Therefore, the counter does not work with blank tapes or
blank portion of partially recorded tapes.

To return to the clock display, press DISPLAY again.

CANCEL works only when the counter is on the display.

FAST-FORWARD/REWIND AND VISUAL SEARCH

When the VCR is in the stop mode, press FAST/F or REWIND to quickly fast-
forward or rewind the tape. (There is no place or sound.) Use the
counter to locate a specific section of tape.

To view a tape in forward or reverse at a fast playback speed, begin
regular playback of a tape. Then, press FAST-F or REWIND.

Press PLAY for normal playback.

NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display for visual search.

During visual search, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture
is lower in quality than during normal playback. However, the
search picture is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed.

SKIP SEARCH

This function lets you advance the tape in 30-second increment so you
can locate a particular portion of recording quickly.

Press SKIP SEARCH on the remote control during playback. The display
shows 0.30. Press the button as many times as necessary to display the
ship time you desire. You can only set the skip time in 30-second
increments from 30 seconds to 120 seconds.

The VCR performs visual search for the playback time you specify, then
resumes normal playback.

MODE LOCK

You can lock in any selected mode on the VCR (including power off) to
prevent accidentally changing to another mode or to prevent small
children from operating the VCR. All modes remain locked until you
release the mode lock.

To activate the mode lock, press MODE LOCK on the remote control for about
two seconds. (key) flashes on the display, then lights steadily, showing
that the mode lock function is active.

When the VCR locks in the selected mode, other operation buttons are
temporarily inoperative, (Auto-release of the freeze-frame mode and the
record pause mode still function during the mode lock.)

To release the mode lock, press and hold down MODE LOCK on the remote
control until (key) disappears.

NOTE: If you lose the remote control after you activate the mode lock,
press ALL CLEAR on the VCR. This also erases all the clock and
       timer program settings.

BLUE-SCREEN DISPLAY

The blue-screen feature replaces audio and video noise when you play
unrecorded portions of a tape or when you tune to a weak broadcast or
cable TV station. The blue screen also appears if you set the VCR to
the A/V mode when no audio/video signals are connected to the AUDIO/
VIDEO IN jacks.

The BLUE SCREEN switch in the VCR's compartment is set to ON at the
factory. If you do not want to use this feature, set the switch to OFF.

NOTES: The blue-screen feature does not function when the still, video
search, or tuner programming mode is active.

The blue-screen feature might not function properly if a
broadcast signal is too strong or too weak.

The blue-screen feature might not function properly if you use
        an outdoor antenna.

The blue-screen feature does not function during tape playback
if the tape has excessive noise.

You cannot record the blue screen.

REPEAT PLAYBACK

Follow these steps to repeat any section of the tape.

1. During playback, press REPEAT at the beginning of the section you
want to repeat. (symbol) flashes on the TV's screen.

2. At the end of the section you want to repeat, press REPEAT again.
(Symbol) lights steadily and VCR rewinds the tape to the beginning
of the repeatedly section and plays the section.

3. Press STOP to temporarily stop repeat playback. To cancel repeat
    playback, press CANCEL.

NOTE: If the start and end counter numbers are the same or if the
end counter number is smaller than the start counter number,
the repeat playback function is cancelled and (symbol)
           disappears.

FAST-RESPONSE SYSTEM

When you load a video cassette tape with its erase-protection tab intact,
the VCR positions the tape next to the record/playback head for about
5 minutes. Within this period, you can start playback or recording the
moment you press the appropriate button. This is useful any time you need
a precise start for playback or recording.

When you stop a tape during playback or recording, the tape remains
positioned next to the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. After
5 minutes, the fast-response system releases to protect the tape.
