Model 52 Hi-Fi VHS VCR
(160-0622) Recording Faxback Doc. # 39441
There are four ways to record using your VCR - immediate recording, quick
timer recording, automatic timer recording, and dubbing. Your VCR
automatically adjusts the audio recording level.
The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection
tab in place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects
if you try to record on it. (See "Operation," Faxback Doc. # 39440.)
Copyright Information
Unauthorized recording or use of broadcast television programming, video
tape, film, or other copyrighted material may violate applicable copyright
laws. Radio Shack assumes no responsibility for the unauthorized
duplication, use, or other acts which infringe upon the rights of
copyright owners.
TAPE SELECTION
The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only video cassette that display the official
VHS logo.
High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty
video heads. This type of tape gives the best results.
Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use T-120
or shorter length tape.
The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length
tapes at the three recording speeds.
Cassette T-60 T-120 T-160

SP 1 hour 2 hours 2 2/3 hours

AUDIO-ONLY RECORDING
Because of the superior quality of VHS hi-fi audio recordings, you might
want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the
audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to
the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks.
You can also make live recordings by connecting a preamplifier or mixer
to the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. However, do not directly connect a
microphone to the VCR.
NOTE: You must disconnect the VCR's VIDEO IN jack before you make an
audio-only recording.
QUICK TIMER RECORDING
Your VCR is capable of two types of quick timer recording (QTR) - immediate
and delayed.
Immediate QTR starts recording immediately and stops at the time you select.
Delayed QTR starts recording at the time you select within the following
24 hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, recording stops at the time
you select.
NOTES: You must set the clock before using the QTR feature.
You cannot use immediate QTR if the VCR is programming for
automatic timer recording.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING
Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end recording
while you are away. Your VCR has eight program timers that let you record
on a specific day within a 1-year period (NORMAL), the same day every
week (WEEKLY), or once a day, the same time every day (DAILY). You can
set each program timer to record on a different channel and at a different
speed.
Automatic timer recording consists of two steps, setting the program timer
and making the automatic timer recording.
Setting the Program Timers
You must use the remote control to set the program timers.
Be sure you correctly set the clock before you use automatic timer
recording.
In the following example, Timer No. 1 is set to record Channel 7 from
9:05 pm to 10:35 pm on Thursday, December 10th, 1992 at the SP speed.
1. Insert a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over,
into the VCR. The VCR turns on.
If the cassette's erase-protection tab is removed, place a piece of
plastic tape over the hole to allow recording on the tape.
2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's
OUTPUT CHANNEL switch. Or, if you have a TV/monitor, set the monitor
to the video mode.
3. Press TV/VCR until VCR appears on the display.

Precede single-digit entries with 0.
NOTE: If you accidentally set the timer to record on a date that is
before the VCR's clock, date, the VCR considers the set time,
date, and day of the week to be for the next year.
9. Use the number buttons to set the start time. (Press 0, 9, 0, and
5 to set 9:05.)
Precede single-digit entries with 0.

settings, press CANCEL.
Making an Automatic Timer Recording
After you set the automatic program timer(s), follow the steps below to
make the recording(s).
1. Be sure a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over,
is in the cassette compartment.
2. If you record an MTS broadcast, set the SAP ON/OFF on the VCR as
desired.
3. Press POWER to turn off the VCR. TIMER appears on the display. This
shows that the VCR is in the timer standby mode. When a timer
recording begins, the record indicator appears.
You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times,
but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is
off at the set start time(s).
Automatic Timer Recording Hints
If a power failure occurs or the VCR is unplugged for more than about
one hour, the VCR loses the clock setting and all timer settings.
If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts later has priority.
The VCR begins recording the second program at the start time you set,
before the first program ends.
If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette,
TIMER flashes.
If you insert a cassette with its erase-protection tab removed and set
the VCR's timer, the cassette ejects and TIMER flashes on the display.

Be sure to turn off the VCR to enter the timer standby mode if you still
have timer program(s).
DUBBING
The process of recording from one VCR (playback VCR) to another (recording
VCR) is called dubbing.
You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V
outputs in place of the playback VCR.
Always use video-quality shielded cables with phono connectors. Do not
use standard audio patch cords.
Connections for Dubbing
Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO IN jacks on the front or rear of the Model
52.
If the playback VCR is mono, use an Y-adapter (available at your local
Radio Shack store) to connect the playback VCR's audio output to both
AUDIO IN jacks on the front or rear of the Model 52.
NOTE: When you connect cables to both AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks on front
and rear, the front jacks have priority.
Dubbing a Video Cassette Tape
To dub a video cassette, do the following:
1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.
2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over,
into the Model 52's cassette compartment.
3. Select the A/V mode using CH UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW, or by entering
00 on the remote control until AV appears on the display.
4. Press SP/LP/EP to display the desired recording speed.
5. Press RECORD on the Model 52.
6. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.

control receiver window. Otherwise, the remote control might
affect the playback VCR's operation.
Monitoring Dubbing
Follow these steps to monitor dubbing.
1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 52, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 52's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch.
2. Press TV/VCR until VCR appears on the display, or set your TV
