OPTIMUS MODEL 54 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0624) Operation Faxback Doc. # 39350
Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs
The CH3/CH4 switch and the TV/VCR and TU/SC/AV buttons control the input
and output signals of your VCR. This section explains how to select the
channels you view and record.
Setting The CH3/CH4 Switch
Set the VCR's CH3/CH4 switch (on the back of the VCR) to CH3 or CH4,
which-ever is not an active channel in your area.
When VCR appears on the display, the VCR sends the selected video source
from its OUT TO TV terminal to the TV.
The CH3/CH4 switch has no effect on the TV when the VCR is off, when VCR
does not appear on the display, or if you are using a TV which has
separate audio/video input jacks and which is set to the TV mode.
Using The TV/VCR Button
The Model 54's 181-channel (68 VHF/UHF channels, 113 cable channels) tuner
is active anytime you turn it on.
Press TV/VCR on the remote control so VCR appears on the display, and you
can then use the VCR's tuner to select the channel you view.
To select a channel with the TV's tuner, press TV/VCR so VCR does not show
and set the TV to the TV mode.
Whenever the VCR is on, the signals from the VCR are sent to the AUDIO/
VIDEO OUT jacks, regardless of the TV/VCR setting.
Using The TU/SC/AV Button
Press TU/SC/AV on the remote control to select the signals you want to
record and send to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks. This input selection
affects the VHF/UHF OUT signals only when VCR appears on the display.
The VCR displays the channel number when you select TU or SC, or AV when
you select AV for the signals from the AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks.

NOTE: The TU/SC/AV button has no effect during tape playback or when the
VCR's power is off.
Viewing TV Using The TV's Tuner
Turn off the VCR, or press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR does not
appear on the VCR's display.
If your TV has A/V units, be sure to set it to the TV mode. The antenna or
cable signals pass through the VCR unaffected, as if the antenna or cable
were connected directly to the TV. Use the TV as you normally would.

Cable Channel Designations
Your VCR can receive up to 113 cable channels. The VCR displays the
channels as 1-125.
Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable companies
usually number them as they appear on the display.
However, cable companies often designate other cable channels with letters
or letter-number combinations. The following chart shows common cable
channel designations.

Playing a Pre-Recorded Tape
1. Turn on the TV.
2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the VCR's CH3/CH4 switch (3 or
4). (See "Setting the CH3/CH4 Switch", above) If your TV has A/V
input jacks, set it to the video mode.
3. Hold the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label
facing out from the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the cassette
compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine
until the VCR completely draws it in.
The VCR automatically turns on and the tape indicator (tape symbol)
lights.
If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette,
playback automatically begins. (See "Erase Protection" on Faxback Doc.
# 33519).
CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the
cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal
mechanisms.
4. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY (X2).
5. Press STOP to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then press
STOP/EJECT on the VCR to eject the cassette.
If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP, the VCR automatically
stops and completely rewinds the tape. If the erase-protection tab has
been removed, the VCR then ejects the cassette and turns off.
NOTE: You can press STOP/EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off.
The VCR's power temporarily turns on to eject the cassette.

Storing Your Video Cassettes
Unless you are making an automatic timer recording, eject and store the
cassette before you turn off the VCR. This helps protect your cassette
and the VCR's internal mechanisms from dust.
Place your video cassettes in their protective boxes and store them in a
cool, dry, dust-free area. Store the cassettes on end, not on their
sides. This prevents improper setting of the cassette's spools.
NOTE: Tape can become wound too tightly around the cassette's spools
after numerous playings. This can cause the cassette to improperly
load and automatically eject when you insert it. On most cassettes
there is a brake-release plunger on the bottom center of the
cassette. Use the tip of a pen or pencil to press the plunger.
This loosens the tape.
