FUNCTION INDICATORS
When you press a function button, the selected function indicator appears
on the TV screen for about 3 seconds to confirm your selection.
Example: If you press [PLAY]. PLAY appears on the TV screen for about
3 seconds.
When you select a different channel, the selected channel
number appears on the TV screen for about 2 seconds.
Example: If you select Channel 32, CH 32 appears on the TV screen for
about 3 seconds.
NOTE: If you play back tapes that contain a high level of noise, the
function or channel number does not appear on the VCR's display.
Press [ON SCREEN MODE] to display all the information of your VCR's
current operation mode on your TV screen. Press [ON SCREEN MODE] again
to return to the normal picture.
Tape Motion Indicators - show the direction and speed of the tape.
when the cassette ejects, the indicator goes off.
When you set a QTR, the start and stop times of the QTR appears on the
TV screen.
VISUAL SEARCH
Visual search lets you view a tape in forward or reverse at a fast
playback speed.
To search at the fast speed, begin regular playback of a tape. Then,
press [FAST-F] to screen forward or press [REWIND] to search backward.
Press [PLAY] to return to normal playback speed.
During visual search, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture is lower
in quality than during normal playback. However, the search pictures is best with tapes recorded in the SP or EP mode.
FREEZE-FRAME
Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape and view a single frame.
Press [PAUSE/STILL] during playback to freeze the picture. Press [PAUSE/
STILL] again to return to normal playback.
During freeze-frame, the picture is lower in quality than during normal
playback. However, the two extra video heads and the V-LOCK control
assure the best possible freeze-frame picture for SP- and EP-mode
recordings.
NOTES: If the picture shakes during the freeze-frame mode of an SP- or
EP- mode recording, use the supplied jitter-adjustment tool to
adjust the V-LOCK control until you reduce or eliminate the
shaking.
If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for more than five
minutes, the VCR automatically switches back to the normal play-
back mode.
FRAME ADVANCE (Remote Control Only)
During freeze-frame, you can advance the picture one frame at a time
by pressing [F-AVD].
During frame advance, the picture is lower in quality than during normal
playback. The picture is best with recording made in the SP or EP mode.
VARIABLE SPEED SLOW-MOTION
(Remote Control Only)
During playback, freeze-frame, or the video search mode, press [SLOW] to
reduce the playback speed. The VCR mutes the sound during slow-motion.
You can use [SLOW +] or [SLOW -] to vary the slow speed from 1/30 to 1/5
of normal playback speed.
Press [PLAY] to return to normal playback speed.
NOTE: Adjust the tracking using the TRACKING [DOWN ARROW]/[UP ARROW]
buttons to reduce video noise during slow-motion.
DIGITAL COUNTER WITH MEMORY
(Remote Control Only)
Use the VCR's digital counter and memory functions to mark and return
to specific locations on a video tape. To use either function, press
[COUNTER/CLOCK] so that the counter appears on the VCR's display.
To use the counter most effectively, completely rewind tapes before
you play them. Then, press [RESET] to set the counter to 0000. As
you record or play a tape, note the counter reading at locations you
want to return to. Then, if you start at the beginning of the tape
with a counter reading of 0000 the next time you play the tape, the
numbers are the same (plus or minus a few counts) for the same locations
on the tape.
To use the memory functions, press [RESET] at a tape location that you
want to return to. The counter displays 0000. Then, continue recording
or playback. When you are ready to return to the selected location,
press [MEMORY]. M appears on the display. Then press [REWIND]. The
VCR stops at or close to 0000 on the counter.
NOTES: To return to the clock display, press [COUNTER/CLOCK] again.
The [RESET] button works only when the counter is on the VCR's
display.
You can use the memory function whenever M appears on the VCR's
display, even if the display shows the clock display.
TRACKING CONTROL
The TRACKING [DOWN ARROW]\[UP ARROW] buttons let you adjust your VCR
for the best picture during tape playback. If the picture quality is
poor, adjust this control as needed.
NOTE: Different video cassettes might require different tracking control
adjustments. Therefore, whenever you insert a different cassette,
you might need to re-adjust the tracking control.
FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND
Use [FAST-F] and [REWIND] when the VCR is in the stop mode to quickly
wind the tape in the desired direction. Press and release the appropriate
button. The tape rapidly moves in the chosen direction, but there is
no picture or sound. Use the counter and memory functions to locate
specific sections of the tape.
RECORD PAUSE
Use [PAUSE/STILL] during recording to edit unwanted material, such as
commercials.
Press [PAUSE/STILL] at the beginning of the unwanted material. The tape
temporarily stops. Press [PAUSE/STILL] again to resume recording.
Using [PAUSE/STILL] makes a smooth, almost unnoticeable edit. Using
[STOP] for editing can produce a "glitch" at the edit point.
NOTES: If you leave the VCR in the pause mode for more than five minutes
during recording, the VCR automatically returns to the sound
mode.
[PAUSE/STILL] does not function during automatic timer
recording.
AUTOMATIC PLAY/REPEAT
When you insert a cassette that has its erase-protection tab removed,
playback automatically starts. When the tape reaches the end, the VCR
automatically rewinds the tape.
Set the AUTO FUNCTION switch to PLAY to automatically eject the cassette
and turn of the power after automatic-rewind. Set the AUTO FUNCTION
switch to REPEAT to repeat playback after automatic-rewind.
AUTOMATIC REWIND
When the tape reaches the end during manual recording, playback, or
fast-forward, the VCR automatically rewinds the tape to the beginning
(or to the 0000 counter reading if the counter memory function is activated).
If the counter memory function or automatic-repeat function is not active,
the VCR ejects the cassette and turns off.
BLUE SCREEN (Front Panel Only)
The blue-screen feature replaces audio and video noise when you play
unrecorded portions of a tape or when you tune to a weak broadcast
or cable TV station. The blue screen also appears if you set the
VCR to the Aux mode when no audio/video signals are connected to the
AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks.
The BLUE SCREEN switch is set to ON at the factory. If you do not want
to use this feature, set the switch to OFF.
NOTES: The blue-screen feature does not function when the still, video
search, or tuner programming mode is active.
The blue-screen feature might not function properly if a broad-
cast signal is too strong or too weak.
The blue-screen feature might not function properly if you use
an indoor antenna.
The blue-screen feature does not function during tape playback if
the tape has excessive noise.
YOU cannot record the blue screen.
MODE LOCK (Remote Control Only)
You can lock in any selected mode on the VCR (including power off)
to prevent accidental change to another mode or to prevent small
children from operating the VCR. All modes remain locked until you
release the mode lock.
To activate the mode lock, press [MODE LOCK] on the remote control for
about two seconds. (KEY) flashes on the display, then lights steadily,
showing that the mode lock function is active.
When the VCR locks in the selected mode, other operation buttons are
temporarily inoperative. (Auto-release of the freeze-frame mode and the
record pause mode still function during the mode lock.)
To release the mode lock, press and hold [MODE LOCK] on the remote control
until (key) disappears.
NOTE: If you lose the remote control after you activate the mode lock,
press [ALL CLEAR] in the VCR's control compartment. This also
resets all the clock and timer program settings.
DEW PROTECTION SYSTEM
Condensation inside the VCR can cause tape jams or video head damage.
The dew protection system helps avoid such damage by preventing VCR
operation when the system senses excess moisture.
The VCR displays DEW to shown that the dew protection system is active.
You can resume normal operation only after the condensation is evaporated
and DEW disappears.
