VHS Hi Fi VCR/4hd Mod 46
(160-0616) Recording Faxback Doc. # 38185
Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level while it
maintains the high dynamic range characteristics of VHS hi-fi recording.
TAPE SELECTION
The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official
VHS logo.
High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty
video heads. This tape gives the best results, especially in the EP
mode.
Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest that you
use T-120 or shorter length tape.
The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length
tapes at the three recording speeds.
Cassette Indication T-60 T-120 T-160
SP Mode 1-hour 2 hours 2-2/3 hours
(60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)
LP Mode 2 hours 4 hours 5-1/3 hours

EP Mode 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
(180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)

RECORDING SIMULCASTS
In a simulcast, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the

for stereo programs, but the radio signal moves through the cable wire
instead of the air.
Use the following steps to record the stereo programs.
1. Connect your stereo receiver's tape-out jacks to your VCR's AUDIO IN
jacks.
2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo amplifier/receiver.
3. Insert a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over,
into the VCR.

6. Tune the receiver to the proper radio station.
7. Use CHANNEL [UP ARROW]/[DOWN ARROW] or the remote control's number
buttons to select the proper channel.
8. Record the program.
AUDIO-ONLY RECORDING
Because of the superior quality of VHS hi-fi audio recordings, you might
want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the
audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to
the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. You can also make live recordings by connecting
a pre-amplifier or mixer to the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. However, do not
directly connect a microphone to the VCR.
NOTE: You must disconnect the VCR's VIDEO IN jack before you make an
audio-only recording.
QUICK TIMER RECORDING
You VCR includes two types of quick recording (QTR) - immediate and
delayed.
Immediate QTR lets you start recording manually by pressing [REC TIME].
Recording immediately begins and stops after the length of time you
select or when you press [STOP].
Delayed QTR lets you start recording any time within the following 24
hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, recording automatically stops after
the length of time you select. The QTR programming information appears
only on the TV screen.
1. Insert a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over,
into the VCR. The VCR automatically turns on.
If a cassette is already in the VCR, press [POWER] to turn on the
VCR.
2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
SELECT switch, or set the TV monitor to the video mode.
3. Press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on the VCR's display.
4. Press [SP/LP/EP] until the VCR displays the desired recording speed.
5. Press CHANNEL [UP ARROW] or [DOWN ARROW] or use the remote control's
number buttons to select the channel you want to record.
If you want to immediately record and set only the stopping time, skip
Steps 6 and 7.
6. Press [START TIME] on the remote control. The QTR indicator (symbol)
appears on the VCR's display, and the current time flashes on the TV
screen. Then, repeatedly press [START TIME] to set the approximate
starting time. The timer display advances in 10-minute increments.

time.
8. Press [REC TIME] on the remote control to set the approximate end
time. The timer display advances in 10-minute increments.

Recording automatically starts at the set time. When recording ends,
the VCR automatically rewinds the tape to the beginning of the recording,
ejects the cassette, and turns off.
To stop recording before the set length of time, press [STOP] or [CLEAR].
The TV screen's program display automatically turns off a few seconds
after you set the VCR for delayed QTR. You can manually operate the VCR
in the delayed QTR standby mode. The VCR's QTR indicator flashes to show
you that delayed QTR is programmed. If you want to clear the delayed
QTR setting, press [CLEAR] on the remote control.
Quick Timer Recording Hints

cancelled.
All functions not mentioned in this section are inoperative during QTR.

use standard audio patch cords.
You can use a video disc player, satellite receiver, or other unit
with A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR.
Your local Radio Shack store sells a full line of audio/video components
and connection accessories.
Connections
Connect the audio and video outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding AUDIO and VIDEO and VIDEO IN jacks on the Model 46.
