Model 45 VCR
(160-0615) Recording Faxback Doc. # 38150
The remote control has two [RECORD] buttons. You must press both buttons
to activate recording from the remote control. This safety feature helps
prevent accidental erasure of a tape. There is a single [RECORD] button
on the VCR's front panel.
A sophisticated circuits automatically adjust the audio recording level
while maintaining the height dynamic range characteristics of VHS hi-fi
recording.
TAPE SELECTION
The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only tapes that display the official VHS logo.
High-grade tapes give the best results, especially at the EP speed.
They also have better oxide coatings that help prevent dirty video heads.
Although T-160 tapes offer the longest recording time, they contain
thinner tape that is more likely to cause tape jams. We suggest that you
use T-120, or shorter, tapes.
Below is a chart that shows the maximum recording times for different-
length tapes at the three recording speeds.
Cassette Indication T-160 T-120 T-160
SP Mode 1 hour 2 hours 2-2/3 hours
(60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)
LP Mode 2 hours 4 hours 5-1/3 hours
(120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes)
EP Mode 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
(180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)

button. Recording begins immediately and stops automatically after the
length of time you select (30 minutes to four hours or to the end of the
tape).
Delayed QTR lets you start program recording any time within the following
24 hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, the recording stops automatically
after the length of time you select (30 minutes to four hours or to the
end of the tape).
You cannot use immediate QTR when the VCR is programmed for delayed QTR.
Immediate Quick Timer Recording
1. Turn on the VCR.
2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch
on the back of the VCR.
3. Press [TV/VCR] on the remote control so that VCR appears on the
display (or set your TV monitor to the video mode).
Note:
Steps 2 and 3 are not necessary but are suggested because they let you
confirm that you are recording the desired program.
4. Insert a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into the
Model 45's cassette compartment.

(tuner, simulcast or A/V). See "Simulcast Recording."
The automatic timer does not control this setting. You must set
it manually for each timer program.
3. If you are recording an MTS broadcast, set the MTS switch as desired.
4. Press [POWER] to turn off the VCR. The timer indication (TIMER) and
the number(s) of the set timer program(s) appear on the display.
This indicates the VCR is in the timer standby mode. When a timer
recording actually begins, the display changes to T.REC.
You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times, but
the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is off at
the set start-time(s).
Automatic Timer Recording Hints
If there is a power failure or the VCR is unplugged for more than few
seconds, the clock setting and all timer settings are lost.
If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer
recording, the recording is cancelled.
If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts first has priority.
When the first program ends, the VCR switches to record the remainder
of the second program.
If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette,
the timer indicator flashes.
Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording
1. Turn on the TV, and set its tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL
switch on the VCR.
2. Press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on the display. Or set your
TV monitor to the video mode.

program. The new times replace the old ones.
To clear a timer program, press [PROG/QTR CLEAR] when the program
information is displayed in the timer-setting mode.
Timer Auto Rewind
When all the programmed timer recordings have been completed with the
memory counter function activated (M is displayed), the tape automatically
rewinds to the OH 00M 00S counter reading.
See "Special Functions," Faxback Doc. # 38151.
RECORDING FROM ONE VCR TO ANOTHER
The process of recording form one VCR to another is called dubbing.
You can use VHF signals to make such recordings, but separate audio/video
signals are preferred.
Always use video-qualilty shielded cables with RCA-type connectors, such
as Cat. No. 15-1537. Do not use standard hi-fi patch cords.
You can use a video disc player, satellite receiver, or other unit with
A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR.
Connections
Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 45.
If the playback VCR is mono, use a Y-adapter to connect the audio signal
to both AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 45.
Playback VCR Setup
Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.
Model 45 Setup
1. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
the cassette compartment.
2. Press [INPUT SELECT] so that A/V appears on the display.
3. Press [TAPE SPEED] until the desired recording speed is displayed
(EP, LP, or SP).
Recording
1. Press [RECORD] on the Model 45.
2. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.
Monitoring Recording
1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 45, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 45's CHANNEL switch.
2. Press [TV/VCR] on the Model 45 so that VCR appears on the display.
Or set your TV monitor to the video mode.
RECORDING SIMULCASTS
For simulcasts, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the
radio at the same time as the TV program is shown. Some cable companies
use the same procedure for stereo programs, except that the radio signal
is carried through the cable wire instead of through the air.
In either case, use the following steps to record the program with stereo
sound.
1. Connect the tape-out jacks of your stereo receiver to the AUDIO INPUT
jacks of your VCR.
2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo receiver.
3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the cassette
compartment.
4. Press [INPUT SELECT] so that SC appears on the display.
5. Press [TAPE SPEED] until the desired recording speed is displayed.
6. Tune the receiver to the radio station for the audio.
7. Use CHANNEL [/\]/[\/] or the remote control number buttons to select
the channel for the video.
8. Begin recording.
AUDIO ONLY RECORDING
Because of the amazing quality VHS hi-fi audio recordings, you might want
to use the Model 45 as an audio-only recorder, too. To do so, simply
connect the audio outputs of a high-level source (a tape deck, for
example) to the Model 45's audio inputs.
You can also make live recording by connecting a pre-amplifier or mixer
between microphones and the VCR inputs. However, do not directly connect
microphones to the VCR.
Note:
When making an audio-only recording, you must disconnect the
VIDEO INPUT jack. This causes the Model 45 to internally generate the
timing pluses that are normally provided by the video signal. If you
leave the VIDEO INPUT jack connected and there is no video signal,
audio-only recording is not possible.
