Model 45 VCR
(160-0615) Connections Faxback Doc. # 38147
GETTING STARTED
This section shows the most basic connections and procedures necessary to
begin using your VCR. We urge you to read the owner's manual completely,
so you can get acquainted with all of the Model 45's features.
When this unit is first plugged in, the clock flashes. You can operate
the VCR manually without setting the clock. Or, if you prefer,
see "Preparation," Faxback Doc. # 38148 before proceeding.
Caution:
In areas of high humidity or when the VCR has been moved from a cold
area to warm one, it is necessary to plug lin the VCR and allow it to
warm up for one to two hours before operating it. This allows
complete evaporation of any moisture inside the VCR that could prevent
operation by activating the DEW sensor. See "Special Functions,"
Faxback Doc. # 38151.
BASIC CONNECTIONS
1. Disconnect the antenna or cable wires from the antenna terminals on
your TV.
2. Connect the antenna or cable wires to the combined VHF/UHF INPUT
terminal on the VCR.
If you have cable service, see "Connections for Cable TV."
If you have 300-ohm antenna wire, use a 300-to-75 ohm adapter
(Radio Shack Cat. No. 15-1253) to complete the connection to the
VHF/UHF INPUT terminal.
If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas, use a signal combiner
(Cat. No. 15-1294) between the antenna cables and the VCR's VHF/UHF
INPUT terminal.
3. Attach the single-connector end of the supplied 75-ohm cable to the
VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal on the VCR.
4. Connect the other end of the cable to the antenna terminal(s) on
the TV.
a. If your TV has separate terminals for VHF and UHF, connect the
cable's 300-ohm UHF output to the TV's UHF terminals; connect the
cable's 75-ohm or 300-ohm VHF output to the TV's VHF terminal(s) -
do not use both VHF outputs.
b. If your TV has a combined VHF/UHF antenna terminal, connect the
cable's 75-ohm combined VHF/UHF output to the TV's terminal.
PLAYING A PRE-RECORDED TAPE
1. Plug in and turn on the TV.
2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the back
of the VCR - either 3 or 4.
See "Setting the CHANNEL Switch."
If you are using a TV monitor that is connected to the AUDIO/VIDEO
OUTPUT jacks of the VCR, set your TV monitor to the video mode.
See "Connections for TV Monitors."
3. Insert a pre-recorded VHS tape into the cassette compartment.
If necessary, the VCR turns on when you insert the tape. If the erase
prevention tab has been removed from the cassette, playback begins
automatically.
See "Video Cassette Handling," Faxback Doc. # 38149.
4. If playback does not begin automatically, press [PLAY].
5. If the tape is recorded with stereo hi-fi sound, select the audio
output mode by pressing [AUDIO OUT] on the remote control.
See "Controlling VCR Inputs & Outputs."
When the tape reaches the end, the VCR automatically rewinds the tape to
the beginning. If the cassette does not have an erase prevention tab,
the VCR ejects it.
Press [STOP] to stop playback before the end of the tape. Press [EJECT]
to remove the tape.
NORMAL TV VIEWING
1. Turn on the TV.
2. Turn off the VCR, or press [TV/VCR] on the remote control so that VCR
does not appear on the display. The antenna or cable signals pass
through the VCR unaffected, as if they were connected directly to the
TV.
If you're using a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode.
3. Select the desired channel, using the TV tuner (or the cable box).
CONNECTION FOR CABLE TV
There are two basic questions to consider when connecting your VCR to a
cable system.
Are you receiving any scrambled channels?
Does the cable system have more channels than the VCR can tune
(52 channels, for Model 45)?
If the answer to both of these questions is no, use Connection A.
If the answer to either of these questions is yes, use Connection B.
Caution:
Some states have laws restricting direct connections to cable wires
(connections that don't go through the cable box). Check the laws in
your area before making any connections.
Note to CATV system installer:
This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer's attention to
Article 820-22 of the National Electrical Code. This article provides
guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the
cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building,
as close to the point of cable entry as practical.
Connection A
With Connection A, you can watch one channel while recording another. To
do this, press [TV/VCR] so that VCR does not appear on the display. Of
course, you can watch the channel you are recording.
If your TV does not have a cable-compatible tuner, you must connect the
cable box between the VCR and the TV.
Note:
Because the cable wire is connected directly to the VCR, set the
TV/CATV switch to CATV.
Connection B
With Connection B, you can record from any cable channel you subscribe to
while watching any channel that you can select using the TV tuner.
Use the cable box to select the channel you want to record. Use the A/B
switch to choose between viewing the non-scrambled channels that you can
directly tune on your TV or the channel you select using the cable box.
If you are recording a scrambled channel, you can watch a different
scrambled channel only if you have a second cable box.
Note:
Because the output of the cable box is a regular VHF channel
(usually 3 or 4), set the TV/CATV switch to TV.
CONNECTIONS FOR TV MONITORS
TV monitors are units that have only separate audio and video inputs.
However, most home units old as monitors are actually combination
receiver/monitors that have antenna connections and separate audio/video
inputs. All Radio Shack monitors are the combination type.
If you have a combination receiver/monitor, we suggest the following
connections for playback and monitoring of recording. Direct audio/video
connections usually result in better picture and sound for tape playback.
Set the TV/VIDEO switch on your TV/monitor to VIDEO to watch video tapes
of channels you select using the VCR's tuner.
Note:
Use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors
(such as Cat. No. 15-1537). Do not use standard audio cables.
Of course, if you have a combination receiver/monitor, you should also
make VHF/UHF connections to allow viewing of those signals.
See "Basic Connections." Set the TV/VIDEO switch TV to view these
signals.
CONNECTIONS FOR STEREO HI-FI
Stereo signals from the VCR tuner or from a stereo hi-fi recording are
available from the AUDIO OUTPUT jacks. If you want to connect the
AUDIO OUTPUT jacks to your existing stereo system, follow the drawing
below.
The settings of the MTS switch and [AUDIO OUT] button on the remote
control affect the stereo output of the VCR.
See "Controlling VCR Inputs & Outputs."
CONNECTIONS FOR VIDEO PROCESSORS
You can use any video processors with your Model 45. Video processors can
improve playback quality and help maintain quality when dubbing tapes.
Connect the processors between the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUTPUT jacks and the
TV's terminals.
Some processors use only separate audio/video signals. With a regular TV
(not a monitor), you need a processor with a built-in RF modulator, or you
need a separate RF modulator (Cat. No. 15- 1273).
CONTROLLING VCR INPUTS & OUTPUTS
The CHANNEL switch, [TV/VCR] button, [INPUT SELECT] button, MTS switch,
and [AUDIO OUT] button work together to control the input and output
signals of the Model 45. This is important during recording or when you
use the VCR's tuner to select the program you want to watch. Be sure you
understand the function of each control and how each one affects the
others.
SETTING THE CHANNEL SWITCH
During playback, the video tape signals are sent from the VCR's VHF/UHF
OUTPUT terminal to the TV on the channel you select using the CHANNEL
switch (on the back of the VCR). The tape signals are also sent to the
VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUTPUT jacks.
If a video tape is not playing and you press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears
on the display, the signals you select using the VCR's [INPUT SELECT]
button are sent to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal on the channel you select
using the CHANNEL switch. The same signals are sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO
OUTPUT jacks.
The CHANNEL switch has no affect when the VCR is off or when VCR does not
appear on the display.
USING THE INPUT SELECT BUTTON
Press [INPUT SELECT] to select the signals you want to record and the
signals you want to send to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUTPUT jacks. The input-
select setting affects the VHF/UHF OUTPUT signals only when you press
[TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on the display. The input-select setting is
indicated on the VCR's display as follows:
Input Mode Display Video Source Audio Source
Tuner Channel display Tuner channel Tuner channel
Simulcast SC+channel display Tuner channel Audio input
Audio/video A/V Video input Audio input
Note:
The [INPUT SELECT] button has no affect when the VCR is turned off.
SETTING THE MTS SWITCH
Use the MTS switch to select the audio signal that is recorded when you
set [INPUT SELECT] to the tuner mode (TU) and MTS stereo signals are
received. The MTS switch has no effect on A/V or SIMUL signals, or on
mono broadcast signals. The following the chart shows what is recorded on
the left- and right-channel for each of the switch settings.
Switch Setting Type of Broadcast Tuner Selected Audio Regular Track
L Ch. R Ch.
MONO MTS Stereo L+R L+R L+R
STEREO MTS Stereo L R L+R
MTS Stereo + SAP L R L+R
SAP* MTS Stereo + SAP L+R SAP SAP
*Special Audio Program
The sound you hear during recording or playback might also be affected by
the [AUDIO OUT] button. See "How the Tuner Works" for more information
about MTS and SAP signal reception.
When you play back a tape that was recorded using regular stereo signals
(not hi-fi) or when you use [AUDIO OUT] to select NORM, you hear only
monaural signals. If you record a SAP broadcast, you hear only the
monaural SAP signal when you select NORM.
USING THE AUDIO OUT BUTTON AND AUDIO OUTPUT MODE INDICATORS
Use [AUDIO OUT] on the remote control to select the sound you hear during
recording or playback. The button is especially useful when you record
the main signal on the left channel and a different SAP signal on the
right. By pressing this button repeatedly, the output audio signal
changes as follows.
Relation between [AUDIO OUT], the Hi-Fi AUDIO OUTPUT MODE indicator, and
Hi-Fi indicator.

[AUDIO OUT] has no effect on mono signals and it effects only the signals
you hear. Recording signals are controlled by the MTS switch.
If you play back a tape recorded by non hi-fi VCR, the Hi-Fi indicator
does not light, and the sound does not change even if you press
AUDIO OUT].
HOW THE TUNER WORKS
The Model 45's 122-channel, PLL tuner is active when the VCR is turned on
and you set [INPUT SELECT] (located in the control compartment on the
front panel) to the tuner (TU) or simulcast (SC) mode. The tuner has two
functions.
It lets you select what is recorded by the VCR.
It lets you select the output of the VCR when neither recording nor
playback is in progress and you press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on
the display.
The tuner has no affect on recording or VCR output when you set the VCR to
the A/V mode or when the power is off.
SETTING THE TV/CATV SWITCH
Depending on the setting of the TV/CATV switch, the tuner is capable of
receiving VHF/UHF channels (2-83) or cable channels (1-47 and 95-99).
(The TV/CATV switch is in the control compartment on the front panel.)
When you set the TV/CATV switch to TV, the tuner selects VHF/UHF channels.
When you set it to CATV, the tuner selects cable channels.
PROGRAMMING THE TUNER MEMORY
You can program the tuner's memory so the VCR scans only the channels used
in your area when you use CHANNEL [/\]/[\/].
You can select channels that are not in the memory using the remote
control's DIRECT ACCESS TUNING.
1. Set the TV/CATV switch for the type of signals you plan to receive.
Note:
There is one memory for tuner programming and you can enter either
broadcast TV stations or CATV stations, not both.
2. Press TUNER PRESET [AUTO].
The tuner automatically scans the entire range of the selected band
(TV or CATV) and memorizes all the active channels in your area.
After scanning all the channels, the tuner stops on the lowest-
numbered active channel.
3. Press either CHANNEL [/\]/[\/] to check the memory's contents.
4a. If a channel that you do not want to scan is stored in memory, press
TUNER PRESET [DELETE] while that channel is displayed. The deleted
channel remains on the display, but is erased from the scanning
memory.
4b. If you want to program a channel that automatic programming missed,
enter the desired channel number using the remote control number
buttons, and press TUNER PRESET [MANUAL].
Note:
If the AC cord is unplugged or a power failure occurs for more than a
few seconds, the memory information is lost.
CHANNEL SELECTION
There are three methods of channel selection - manual scan, auto-scan, and
direct.
To manually scan for a channel, press one of CHANNEL [/\]/[\/] buttons.
The tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel in the
direction of the button's arrow.
When the tuner reaches the top of its range, it wraps to the bottom of the
range. And, when the tuner reaches the bottom of its range, it wraps to
the top of the range.
To auto-scan for a channel, you must use the remote control. Press
[CHANNEL SCAN] once. The tuner begins scanning the channels stored in the
tuner's memory, stopping on each channel for about 2 seconds. To stop
auto-scanning, press [CHANNEL SCAN] again when the desired channel is
displayed. Auto-scan automatically stops when all channels are scanned
one time.
To directly select a channel, you must use the remote control. Simply
press the number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede
one-digit channel numbers with a zero (01, 02, 03 and so on).
With direct selection, you can choose any channel in the tuner's range,
even it there is no broadcast present. (The tuner does not unscramble
cable channels.)
CABLE CHANNEL DESIGNATIONS
The Model 45 is capable of receiving 52 cable channels. The channels are
displayed as 1-47, and 95-99.
Channels 2-13 are actually the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable
companies usually number them as they appear on the display.
However, cable companies often designate the other channels with letters
or letter-number combinations. The following is a chart of common cable
channel designations.

We suggest that you call your cable company for more information. Even so
you might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel
designations for your cable system.
STEREO AND SAP BROADCAST RECEPTION
The MTS (multi-channel television sound) decoder built into your VCR
tuner automatically indicates when stereo and/or SAP
(special audio program) signals are received.
The STEREO indicator lights when a stereo signal is received.
The SAP indicator lights when an SAP signal is received with a mono
main signal.
The STEREO and SAP indicators light when an SAP signal is received
with a stereo main signal.
However, the MTS switch and the [AUDIO OUT] button control what you hear
and/or what is recorded. For example, if the MTS switch is set to MONO,
the recorded signal is mono, even if the STEREO indicator is on.
See "Controlling VCR Inputs & Outputs."
