Video Cassette Recorder
(160-0617) Recording Faxback Doc. # 38140

Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level. The video
cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection tab in
place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects if you
try to record on it.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official
VHS logo.

High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video
heads. This tape gives the best results.

Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use
T-120, or shorter length tape.

The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length
tapes at the three recording speeds.

Cassette Recording Speed T-60 T-120 T-160

          SP 1 hour 2 hours 2 2/3 hours
                          (60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)

          LP 2 hours 4 hours 5 1/3 hours
                          (120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes)

          EP 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
                          (180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)

IMMEDIATE RECORDING

You can record the same program you watch or record one program while you
watch another. Use one of the connections shown in "Connections," Faxback
Doc. # 38138.

    Note:

If you want to record from another VCR, a laser disc player, or other
source with A/V outputs, see "Dubbing."

You can press [PAUSE/STILL] during recording to temporarily pause
recording (during commercials, for example). To resume recording,
press [PAUSE/STILL] again or [RECORD]. See "Record Pause."

11. Press [STOP] to stop recording.

To record one program while you watch another:

1. Follow Steps 1-10 in the previous section.

2. Press [TV/VCR] so that VCR does not appear on the VCR's display. If
you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode.

3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch.

4. Press [STOP] to stop recording.

Power-Failure Auto-Rewind

If a power failure occurs when a video cassette is loaded, the VCR is in
the stop mode, and the quick-response system is activated, the VCR rewinds
to protect the tape for about 10 seconds after power is restored.

Before you make a recording, check the memory counter. If it shows a
negative reading, fast-forward the tape to 0H 00M 00S on the display to
position the tape as it was before the power failure.

QUICK TIMER RECORDING

Your VCR is capable of two types of quick timer recording (QTR) -
immediate and delayed.

Immediate QTR starts recording immediately and stops after the length of
time you select.

Delayed QTR starts recording at the time you select within the following
24 hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, recording stops after the length
of time you select.

    Note:

You cannot use immediate QTR if the VCR is programmed for delayed QTR.

Immediate QTR

1. Inset a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
the VCR. The VCR automatically turns on.

If a cassette is already in the VCR, press [POWER] to turn on the VCR.

2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
    3/4 switch.

If you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode.

3. Press [TV/VCR] on the remote control so that VCR appears on the
    display.

4. Press [INPUT] for the desired input.

5. If you want to record an MTS broadcast, set the MTS switch as desired.

6. Press [TAPE SPEED] on the remote control to display the desired
    recording speed.

7. Select the channel you want to record, or prepare the A/V source you
    want to record.

    Note:

The tuner does not affect A/V source recording.

8. Press QTR [REC TIME] twice to begin recording. The QTR indicator
(SYMBOL) and 0:30 appear on the display. Then, press QTR [REC TIME]
repeatedly until the VCR displays the desired recording length. The
recording lengths are displayed as follows:

    0:30 - 1:00 - 1:30 - 200 - 2:30 - 3:00 - 3:30 - 4:00 - End - 0:00

If you select End, QTR continues until the VCR reaches the end of the
    tape.

To ensure that you record all the desired program, make the recording
length a little longer than the program material.

Delayed QTR

1. Perform Steps 1-7 in "Immediate QTR."

2. Press QTR [START TIME] to display the desired start time
(AM 11:10, for example). The QTR indicator (QTR) lights to show
that delayed QTR is programmed. You can set the start time only
    in 10 minute increments.

3. Press QTR [REC TIME] repeatedly to display the desired QTR length.

Be sure to press [REC TIME] while the QTR indicator (QTR) is on the
display - within about 10 seconds after you press [START TIME].

The VCR automatically turns off about 10 seconds after you set the VCR
    for delayed QTR.

    Note:

If you turn on the VCR manually, QTR is cancelled.

QTR Hints

QTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted, if the
erase-protection tab is removed, or if automatic timer recording
    is in progress.

The remaining recording time appears on the display during QTR.

To cancel QTR during the delayed QTR standby time, press
[PROG/QTR/CLEAR] on the remote control or press [EJECT] on the VCR.

To cancel QTR in progress, press [STOP] or [PROG/QTR/CLEAR].

You can change the QTR length by pressing [REC TIME] during the QTR
    standby time.

The VCR's power turns off at the end of QTR.

[TAPE SPEED] is active during QTR but should not be changed while the
    VCR records.

You cannot check automatic program timer settings during QTR.

If the dew protection system stops the VCR's operation, QTR is
    cancelled.

To stop the tape temporarily during QTR, press [PAUSE/STILL]. Press
[PAUSE/STILL] again or press [RECORD] to resume recording. If you
leave the VCR in the pause mode for five minutes, the VCR stops
    automatically.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

DUBBING

(See Illus.)

The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing.

You can use VHF signals to make such recordings, but separate audio/video
signals are preferred.

Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors. Do not
use standard audio patch cords.

You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V
outputs in place of the playback VCR.

Connections for Dubbing

Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 47.

If the playback VCR is mono, use a Y-adapter (available at your local
Radio Shack store) to connect the playback VCR's audio output to both
AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 47.

To Dub a Video Cassette

1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.

2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
    the Model 47's cassette compartment.

3. Press [INPUT] so that A/V appears on the display.

4. Press [TAPE SPEED] on the remote control to display the desired
recording speed (SP, LP, or EP).

5. Press [RECORD on the Model 47.

6. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.

    Note:

For best results during dubbing, use the VCR's front panel controls
whenever possible. The Model 47's remote control might affect the
    playback VCR's operation.

Monitoring Dubbing

1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 47, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 47's CHANNEL 3/4 switch.

2. Press [TV/VCR] on the remote control so that VCR appears on the
display, or set your TV monitor to the video mode.

RECORDING SIMULCASTS

In a simulcast, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the
radio while the TV program is shown.

Some cable companies use simulcasts for stereo programs, but the radio
signal is transmitted through the cable wire instead of the air.

Use the following steps to record the stereo programs.

1. Connect your stereo receiver's tape-out jacks to your VCR's
    AUDIO INPUT jacks.

2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo receiver.

3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the VCR's
    cassette compartment.

4. Press [INPUT] so that ST appears on the display.

5. Press [TAPE SPEED] to display the desired recording speed.

6. Tune the receiver to the proper radio station.

7. Use CHANNEL [\/] or [/\] or the remote control's number buttons to
    select the proper channel.

8. Record the program.

AUDIO-ONLY RECORDING

Because of the superior quality of VHS hi-fi audio recordings, you might
want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the
audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to
the VCR's AUDIO INPUT jacks.

You can also make live recordings by connecting a preamplifier or mixer to
the VCR's AUDIO INPUT jacks. However, do not directly connect a
microphone to the VCR.

    Note:

You must disconnect the VCR's VIDEO IN jack before you make an
    audio-only recording.
