INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERIES

The remote control requires two AAA batteries (not included) for
operation.  We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555).

Install the batteries as shown below.

1.  Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing the cover in the
    direction of the arrow.

2.  Place two fresh AAA batteries in the compartment, observing the
    polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment.

3.  Replace the compartment cover.

    Note:

    If the remote control does not work or operates erratically, replace
    both batteries.

    Caution:

    Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type.  Always
    remove old or weak batteries.  They can leak chemicals that can damage
    electronic circuits.

USING THE REMOTE CONTROL

Some of the remote control's buttons are duplicated on the VCR's front
panel.  You can use these buttons to perform identical procedures either
at the VCR or by remote control.  The following special-function buttons
appear only on the remote control.

To use the remote control, point it at the VCR and press the desired
button(s).

1.  Number Buttons

    - allow direct selection of any channel within the tuner's range.
      You can also use these buttons to set the clock or enter timer 
      information.

2.  [PROG] Button

    - use to set the clock and automatic program timers.
      This button is explained in detail in "Setting the Clock"
      and "Recording," Faxback Doc. # 38140.

3.  [PROG/QTR/CLEAR] Button

    - use to erase the quick timer recording settings and automatic
      program timers.

4.  [RESET] Button

    - press to reset the counter to 0H 00M 00S.

5.  [TAPE SPEED] Button

    - press to select the desired recording speed.
      The corresponding tape indicator lights.)

6.  [AUDIO OUT] Button

    - press to select the sound you hear during recording and playback.

7.  [TV/VCR] Button

    - press so that VCR appears on the display to watch the signal you
      select using the [INPUT] button.  Press again so that VCR does not
      appear on the display for normal TV viewing.

8.  [CH SCAN] Button

    - press to scan all memorized channels.

9.  [QUICK] Button

    - Press during playback to begin quick-motion playback.
      Press [PLAY] to return to normal playback.

10. [MEMORY/REPEAT] Button

    - press to select the counter memory function in any mode other than
      playback.  Press during playback to activate the repeat function.

11. TRACKING [DOWN ARROW]/[UP ARROW] Buttons

    - let you minimize video noise during playback.

SETTING THE CLOCK

Use the remote control to set the clock.

Set the clock accurately for proper automatic-timer and quick-timer
recording.  We suggest you refer to a TV or radio station to obtain the
correct time.

    Note:

    For "Setting the Clock", the instructions refer to the TV's on-screen 
    display indicators.  Some of the indicators on the VCR's display vary 
    slightly.

In the following example, the clock is set to 9:30 p.m. July 4, 1990.

1.  Plug the VCR's power cord into a standard AC outlet.  The VCR's
    display flashes 88:88.

2.  Press [POWER] to turn on the VCR.

3.  Turn on your TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL
    3/4 switch (located on the back of the VCR).  Then, press [TV/VCR] on
    the remote control so that VCR appears on the VCR's display.

    Note:

    If you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the video mode.

4.  Press [PROG] on the remote control.

    a.  If you are setting the clock for the first time after plugging
        in the VCR, the clock setting mode automatically appears on the
        TV screen with the hour digits flashing.

    b.  If you are not setting the clock for the first time after plugging
        in the VCR, the MENU display appears on the TV screen.  Press [1]
        to enter the clock setting mode.  The first hour digit flashes.

5.  Press the remote control's number buttons to set the correct hour and
    minute ([0], [9], [3], and [0] to set 9:30, for example).

    Precede a single-digit entry with [0].  If you press a wrong number
    button, press [PROG/QTR/CLEAR] and press the correct button.

6.  Press [1] to select a.m. and press [2] to select p.m.  Your VCR uses a
    24-hour a.m./p.m. clock.

7.  Press the number buttons to set the correct date (press [0], [7], [0],
    [4], [9], and [0] to set July 4, 1990, for example.

    Precede a single-digit entry with [0].  If you press a wrong number
    button, press [PROG/QTR/CLEAR] and press the correct button.

    The day of the week is automatically set.

8.  Review the entered information.

    If it is correct, press [PROG].  The clocksetting mode display changes
    to the MENU display and the VCR display changes to the correct clock
    display.

    If the information is not correct, press [PROG/QTR/CLEAR] as necessary
    to erase the wrong information.  Then enter the correct information.

9.  Press [PROG] to store the information.  Then, press [PROG] again to
    clear the MENU display.

    Notes:

    If you enter an invalid date or time (13th month, for example), ?
    flashes.  Enter the correct date or time.

    Seconds begin counting at 00 when you press [PROG] after you set the
    date.

    If the display shows an abnormal reading or no reading, unplug the
    power cord for about 5 minutes.  Then, plug it back in.
