VHS Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0614) Operation Faxback Doc. # 38074
RECORDING
The remote control has two [RECORD] buttons. You must press both buttons
to activate recording from the remote control. This safety feature helps
prevent accidental erasure of a tape.
Although they do not affect recording, the Hi-Fi OUTPUT MODE switch and
the PB SELECT switch do affect what you hear when monitoring the
recording. See "Controlling VCR Inputs & Outputs."
A sophisticated circuit automatically adjusts the audio recording level
while maintaining the high dynamic range characteristics of VHS Hi-Fi
recording.
TAPE SELECTION
The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and
the life of the VCR. Use only tapes that have the official (VHS) logo.
High-grade tapes give best results, especially at the EP speed. They also
have better oxide coatings that help prevent dirty video heads.
Although T-160 tapes offer the longest recording time, they contain
thinner tape that is more likely to cause tape jams. We suggest that you
use T-120, or shorter, tapes.
Below is a chart that shows the maximum recording times for
different-length tapes at the three recording speeds.
Cassette Indication T-60 T-120 T-160
SP Mode 1 hour 2 hours 2-2/3 hours
(60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes)
LP Mode 2 hours 4 hours 5-1/3 hours
(120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes)
EP Mode 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours
(180 minutes) (360 minutes) (480 minutes)

of time you select (30 minutes to four hours).
Delayed QTR
lets you start program recording any time within the next 24-hours.
Then, as with immediate QTR, recording stops automatically after the
length of time you select (30 minutes to four hours).
You cannot use immediate QTR when the VCR is programmed for delayed
QTR.
Immediate Quick Timer Recording
In the following example, the VCR is set to record Channel 8 for two
hours.
1. Press [POWER] to turn on the VCR.
2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch

Model 44's cassette compartment.
The erase prevention tab must be in place, or the hole must be covered

To be safe, make the recording length a little longer than the program

The [TAPE SPEED] button is active during QTR, but you should not
change the speed while a recording is in progress.
You can check automatic timer program settings during QTR.
See "Automatic Timer Recording."
If the dew protection system stops VCR operation, quick timer
recording is cancelled.

Recording."
Making an Automatic Timer Recording
After you set the automatic timer program(s), follow the steps below to
make the recording(s).

into the cassette compartment.
If the erase prevention tab has been removed, place a piece of plastic
tape over the hole.

the set start-time(s).
Automatic Timer Recording Hints
If there is a power failure or the VCR is unplugged for more than
30 minutes, the clock setting and all timer settings are lost.
If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer
recording, the recording is cancelled.
If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts first has priority.

RECORDING FROM ONE VCR TO ANOTHER
The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing.
You can use VHF signals to make such recordings, but separate audio/video
signals are preferred.
Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors, such
as Cat. No. 15-1537. Do not use standard Hi-Fi patch cords.
You can use a video disc player, satellite receiver, or other unit with
A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR.
Connections
Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding VIDEO and AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 44.
If the playback VCR is mono, use a Y-adapter to connect the audio signal
to both AUDIO INPUT jacks on the Model 44.
Playback VCR Setup
Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.
Model 44 Setup
1. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into
the cassette compartment.
2. Set the INPUT SELECT switch to A/V.

RECORDING SIMULCASTS
For simulcasts, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the
radio at the same time as the TV program is shown. Some cable companies
use the same procedure, except that the radio signal is carried through
the cable wire instead of through the air.
In either case, use the following steps to record the program with stereo
sound.
1. Connect the tape-out jacks of your stereo receiver to the AUDIO INPUT
jacks of you VCR.
2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo receiver.
3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the cassette
compartment.

6. Tune the receiver to the radio station for the audio.
7. Use the [CHANNEL] buttons or the remote control number buttons to
select the channel for the video.
8. Begin recording.
AUDIO ONLY RECORDING
Because of the amazing quality of Hi-Fi VCR audio recordings, you might
want to use the Model 44 as an audio only recorder, too. To do so, simply
connect the audio outputs of a high level source (a tape deck, for
example) to the Model 44's audio inputs.
You can also make live recording by connecting a pre-amplifier or mixer
between microphone and the VCR inputs. However, do not directly connect
microphones to the VCR.
