BATTERY INSTALLATION FOR THE REMOTE CONTROL

The remote control is powered by two AAA batteries (not included)
We recommend alkaline batteries (Cat. No. 23-555).

Install the batteries as shown below. If the remote control does not work
or operates erratically, replace both batteries.

1. Remove the battery compartment cover.

2. Place two AAA batteries in the compartment, observing the polarity
(+ and -) marked in the compartment.

3. Replace the compartment cover.

CONTROLLING VCR INPUTS & OUTPUTS

The CHANNEL switch, [TV/VCR] button, INPUT SELECT switch, MTS switch,
HI-FI OUTPUT MODE SELECT switch, and the PB SELECT switch work together to
control the input and output signals of the Model 44. This is important
during recording or when you use the VCR tuner to select the program you
want to watch. Be sure you understand the function of each control and
how each one affects the others.

CHANNEL SWITCH

During playback, the video tape signals are sent from the VHF/UHF OUTPUT
terminal to the TV on the channel you select using the CHANNEL switch
(Channel 3 or 4). The tape signals are also sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT
jacks and the SPEAKER terminals.

If a video tape is not playing and you press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears
on the display, the signals you select using the INPUT SELECT switch are
sent to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal on the channel you select using the
CHANNEL switch. The same signals are sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks
and the SPEAKER terminals.

The CHANNEL switch has no effect when the VCR is off or when VCR does not
appear on the display.

TV/VCR BUTTON

When VCR appears on the display, the source you select using the
INPUT SELECT switch is sent to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal
(Channel 3 or 4).

When VCR does not appear on the display, antenna or cable signals
connected to the VHF/UHF INPUT terminal pass through to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT
terminal unaffected. You can use the TV's tuner to select channels as if
the signals were directly connected to the TV.

If the VCR is turned on, the source you select using the INPUT SELECT
switch is sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks and the SPEAKER terminals,
regardless of the TV/VCR mode.

INPUT SELECT ILLUS

Use the INPUT SELECT switch to control the signals you want to record and
the signals you want to send to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT and the SPEAKER
terminals. The INPUT SELECT switch controls the VHF/UHF OUTPUT signals
only when you press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on the display. The
effects of the three INPUT SELECT settings are shown in the following
chart. The INPUT SELECT switch has no affect when the VCR is turned off.

Switch Setting Video Source Selected Audio Source Selected

TUNER TUNER channel TUNER channel TUNER channel

A/V VIDEO INPUT signal AUDIO INPUT signal

SIMULCAST TUNER channel AUDIO INPUT signal

MTS SWITCH

Use the MTS switch to select the audio that is recorded when you set the
INPUT SELECT switch to TUNER and MTS stereo signals are received. The MTS
switch has no effect on A/V or SIMUL signals, or on mono broadcast
signals. The following chart shows the left and right channel content for
each of the switch settings when you are receiving MTS stereo signals.

Switch Setting Type of Broadcast Tuner Selected Audio Regular
                                        Left Ch. Right Ch. Track

MONO MTS Stereo L + R L + R L + R

STEREO MTS Stereo L R L + R
                   MTS Stereo + SAP L R L + R

SAP* MTS Stereo + SAP SAP

* Special Audio Program

The sound you hear during recording or playback might also be affected by
the Hi-Fi OUTPUT Mode switch or the PB SELECT switch. See "How the Tuner
Works" for more information about MTS and SAP signal reception.

HI-FI OUTPUT MODE SWITCH

Use the Hi-Fi OUTPUT MODE switch to control the sound you hear during
recording or playback. The switch is especially useful when the main
signal is on the left channel and a different SAP Signal is on the right.
The following chart shows the available audio options.

VCR Output Switch Setting

STEREO Left and right channels combined (mono)

VHF Output L Left channel only

               R Right channel only

STEREO Left channel from L output, right from R

AUDIO L Left channel from L and R outputs

R Right channel from L and R outputs

The Hi-Fi OUTPUT MODE switch has no effect on mono signals.

PB SELECT SWITCH

Use this switch to select monitoring of the signal from the stereo HI-FI
audio tracks or from the normal mono audio track.

If a tape has only a normal audio track, it is played regardless of the
setting of the PB SELECT switch.

HOW THE TUNER WORKS

The Model 44's 122-channel PLL tuner is active when the VCR is turned on
and you set the INPUT SELECT switch (located in the front-panel control
compartment) to TUNER or SIMUL. The tuner has two functions.

It lets you select what is recorded by the VCR.

It lets you select the output of the VCR when neither recording nor
playback is in progress and you press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on
    the display.

The tuner has no affect on recording or VCR output when you set the
INPUT SELECT switch to A/V or the power is off.

SETTING THE TV/CATV SWITCH

Depending on the setting of the TV/CATV Switch, the tuner is capable of
receiving VHF/UHF channels (2-83) or cable channels (1-47 and 95-99).
(The TV/CATV switch is in the control compartment on the front panel.)

When you set the TV/CATV switch to TV, the tuner selects VHF/UHF channels.
When you set it to CATV, the tuner selects cable channels.

PROGRAMMING THE TUNER MEMORY

You can program your favorite channels into tuner memory, so that the VCR
scans only those channels when you use the front panel or remote control
[CHANNEL] (\///\ buttons.

Other seldom used channels are skipped. You scan still access these
skipped channels by entering the channel number on the remote control
[DIRECT ACCESS TUNING] buttons.

1. Set the TV/CATV switch for the type of signals you plan to receive.

    Note:

There is only one tuner memory. The memory contents are lost when you
change the setting of the TV/CATV switch.

2. Press the [TUNER PRESET AUTO] button.

The tuner automatically scans the entire range of the selected band
(TV or CATV) and memorizes all the active channels in your area.
After scanning all the channels the tuner stops on the lowest-numbered
    active channel.

3. Press either of the [CHANNEL] (\///\) buttons to confirm the memory
    contents.

4a. If a channel that you do not want to store is memorized, press
[DELETE] while that channel is displayed. The deleted channel is
still on the display, but next time you scan the channels it is
    skipped.

4b. If you want to program a channel that the automatic programming
missed, enter the desired channel number using the remote control
    number buttons, and press [MANUAL].

    Note:

If the AC cord is unplugged or a power failure occurs, for more than
30 minutes, the memory information is lost.

CHANNEL SELECTION

There are two methods of channel selection:

scanning and direct.

To scan for a channel, press one of the [CHANNEL (\///\ buttons. The
tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel in the
direction of the button's arrow.

When the tuner reaches the top of its range the tuner wraps to the bottom
of the range. And, when the tuner reaches the bottom of its range, the
tuner wraps to the to of the range.

To directly select a channel, you must use the remote control. Simply
press the number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede
one-digit channel numbers with a zero (01, 02, 03, and so on).

With direct selection, you can choose any channel in the tuner's range,
even if there is no broadcast present. (The tuner does not unscramble
cable channels.)
