(160-2513) Operation, VideoCipher Faxback Doc. # 34194
VideoCipher Module Operation
NOTE: The operating instructions in this section are for the VideoCipher
Renewable Security (VCRS) module, the latest advance in VideoCipher
technology. If you have an older VideoCipher module, follow the
instructions that came with it or call your program provider.
When properly authorized, the VCRS module lets you view VideoCipher
encoded programs and also provides access to the new and expanding
world of pay-per-view programming (see "VideoPal Instant Pay-Per-
view" on Faxback Doc. # 34195).
Other features include:
Additional Data and Audio Channels for future services and greatly
expanded on-screen displays (OSDs). These new displays provide more
information about your system and the types of satellite programming
you watch.
Built-In VideoPal Instant Pay-Per-View. If you choose to use this
feature, you can access pay-per-view programming and be automatically
billed each month only for the programs you watch.
Renewable Security with the TV-Pass Card provides an easy way for
program providers to upgrade Security for their programming without
requiring a new VideoCipher module. This feature is not used by any
subscription service at this time, but when it is, you will be given a
card that slides into the slot on the back of your VCRS module.
Non-Scrambled or Clear Programming. The VCRS module does not affect
your access to non-scrambled programs.
MODULE AUTHORIZATION
After you install a VCRS module, see "Installing a VideoCipher Module," on
Faxback Doc. # 34199, perform the following steps to activate it.
1. Turn on your TV and satellite receiver and select a VideoCipher encoded
channel. VCII appears on the display.
2. Press SET UP, 1, 1 to access the INSTALLATION DATA screen.
Two ID numbers appear on the screen. These are your module's unique
identification numbers and are used by your program providers to authorize
program reception. Write the numbers in the spaces provided.
Unit ID: ___________________________________________________
Phone ID ___________________________________________________
NOTES: The information on your screen might be different from that in the
illustrations in this manual.
Press VIEW to leave this screen and resume normal viewing.
3. One of the installation data items is Signal Quality. This value must
be greater than 60.
If it is less than 60, you might experience difficulty authorizing the
module. Adjust dish alignment and/or receiver video fine tuning to
increase the signal quality value.
4. Call the program provider you plan to use and follow their instructions
to complete authorization of your module.
If you are replacing an old VideoCipher module, you must transfer your
service to the new module. The program provider might ask for the ID
numbers from your old module in addition to the new numbers.
5. After starting or transferring services, leave the receiver tuned to a
VideoCipher scrambled channel until the module receives authorization
and you can view the programs you ordered.
Once your module has received subscription authorization, you might want to
take the time to become familiar with the many different features,
capabilities, and on-screen displays (OSDs) that your VCRS module provides.
The features are described in the following pages. They allow you to:
See how well your system is functioning on VideoCipher channels
Receive important messages from your program provider
Limit access to programs with mature subject material
Use the optional VideoPal features of your module
NOTE: These features are available only on VideoCipher channels.
AVAILABLE SERVICES MENU
Once you authorize your VideoCipher module, you can use all the module's
available menus and features. The first menu you use is the Available
Services Menu.
Press SETUP to access this menu. It has four choices - Unit Setup, Personal
Messages, VideoCipher Audio/Video, and System Information Service.
NOTE: Press VIEW at any time to return to normal television viewing.
Unit Setup
From the Available Services Menu, you press 1 to access the VideoCipher
Unit Setup menu. There are eight choices. Choices 1 through 4 are
described here because they affect both normal VideoCipher operation and
VideoPal pay-per-view operation. Choices 5 through 8 affect only VideoPal
operation, and so they are described in "VideoPal Instant Pay-Per-View."
Installation Data - Press 1 at the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu to see the
INSTALLATION DATA screen.
This screen provides information about unit and system operation. Press
HELP for additional information about the INSTALLATION DATA screen.
Press VIEW to leave this screen and continue normal viewing, or press ENTER
to return to the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu.
The INSTALLATION DATA menu contains the following information.
Lines 1 and 2 contain your unique identification numbers, used by the
program provider to authorize programming.
Line 3 is blank unless the VCRS module's renewable security element,
the TV Pass Card, is installed. It then displays a TV Pass Card ID
number.
NOTE: The TV Pass Card was not used by any program provider when this
manual was prepared.
Line 4 tells you what version of module and TV Pass Card is in your
system.
NOTE: The TV Pass Card version appears only when you install a card.
Line 5 tells you the scrambling status of the channel the receiver is
tuned to. The following table shows possible displays.
MODEL TYPE SCRAMBLING STATUS AUTHORIZED STATUS
DES=Module inserted F=Fixed Key Subscribed
into a standalone
scrambler
IRD=Module inserted P=Processed, Unscrambled Purchased
into an integrated
receiver descrambler
Line 6 shows if your new module has been authorized for VideoPal pay-
per-view operation.
Line 7 contains the unique Provider ID code for each channel.
Line 8 is Signal Quality. The maximum Signal Quality is 100. As noted
earlier, if this number is less than 60, you might have difficulty
authorizing the module and your satellite system might need tuning or
maintenance to operate properly.
Line 9 shows how many authorization change requests your module has
received since you began viewing this screen.
Line 10 shows if your module is receiving a clear signal from your
satellite dish. The clearest signal is indicated by a 10.
Line 11 shows if your system has received its monthly authorization
update from the programmer. These numbers should be the same on all
working descramblers, and they change on a monthly basis.
Line 12 shows that the program provider has your unit identification
number stored properly, so you can receive the programming you have
ordered.
Audio Selection - From the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu, press 2 to select
the AUDIO SELECTION screen.
This screen displays the current audio selection - Primary Or Alternate.
(The alternate audio could be a second language.) The normal setting is
Primary. Not all scrambled channels broadcast an alternate audio. Pressing
1 changes the audio setting. Pressing ENTER returns you to the previous
menu.
Press VIEW at any time to resume normal viewing.
Set Rating Ceiling - From the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu, press 3 to see
the SET RATING CEILING screen.
The PROGRAM RATING line on this screen shows the rating of the current
program. The NR in the example means this is an adult program that has not
been rated by the motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).
The RATING CEILING line indicates the highest rating the module lets anyone
view without entering a password. For example, if you set your rating
ceiling to PG13, your module requires a password (if one has been set)
before letting anyone view any movie with an R, or higher, rating. You
cannot lock out programs with a G or NONE rating.
The following movie ratings are used by premium satellite services:
NONE ........................................................No Rating
G ...................................................General Audiences
PG ........................................Parental Guidance Suggested
PG13 ..........................Parental Guidance for children under 13
R ..........................................................Restricted
NR ...................Not Rated. Used for Non-Rated Adult Programming
NC17 ..........................................No Children 17 or Under
X ..............................................Adult, No One Under 18
To set the level, press either VOL button until the rating ceiling reaches
the desired level. You must set a password to enforce a rating level. If
you do not want to lock out any programs, choose the X setting.
To change your rating ceiling, press 3 at the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu,
and enter your rating password. After you enter the password, you can
change your rating ceiling the same way you set it the first time.
You must press ENTER to save the changes.
Press HELP for additional information about the SET RATING CEILING screen.
Press VIEW to return to normal viewing.
Set Rating Password - From the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu, press 4 to
access the SET RATING PASSWORD screen.
To set a rating password:
1. ENTER an easy-to-remember number of up to 8 digits; the screen displays
an asterisk (*) for each number you enter. Then press ENTER.
The module asks you to enter your password again for confirmation. If
you make a mistake, Press VIDEO to erase the entry.
2. Enter the same number and press ENTER. Your new rating ceiling
password is stored.
3. Press VIEW to resume normal viewing.
To remove a rating password:
1. Press 4 at the VideoCipher Unit Setup menu to access the SET RATING
PASSWORD screen.
2. Enter your existing password and press ENTER.
3. Press ENTER two more times to remove your rating ceiling password. If
you want to set a new password, follow the instructions above.
4. Press VIEW to resume normal viewing.
Personal Messages
From the Available Services Menu, press 2 or MESG to select the Personal
Messages screen. Unless your program service has sent you a message, this
screen displays No Personal Messages.
Press HELP for additional information about the Personal Messages screen.
NOTE: You cannot disable your VCRS module from receiving messages. To
remove the blinking message indicator, display the messages by
pressing MESG.
Press VIEW to leave this screen and resume normal viewing.
VideoCipher Audio/Video
From the Available Services Menu, press 3 to view the programming currently
offered on the VideoCipher channel that you have selected.
Pressing VIEW is the same as pressing 3 at the Available Services Menu.
System Information Service
From the Available Services Menu, press 4 to view the VideoCipher Text
Service screen. This text service is broadcast at the program provider's
option and might not be available on many channels.
Press HELP for further information about this text service. Press VIEW to
leave this screen and return to normal viewing.
VCRS FUNCTIONS
In addition to the SET UP functions, your VCRS module offers the following
functions:
HELP - provides on-line information about the screen you are viewing.
MESG - displays messages from your programming service.
NEXT - displays information about the next program on the channel you are
viewing. This information is transmitted at the programmer's option.
VIEW - displays information about the current program. This might include
the program name and how much time is left in the program. In
addition, it returns you to normal viewing from any other on-screen
display. The information displayed disappears after 5 seconds if
the key is not pressed again.
NOTE: Not all programmers broadcast VIEW or NEXT information.
THE TV PASS CARD OPERATION
A program provider might decide to use the VCRS module's card authorization
feature. A TV Pass Card is a plastic smart card about the size of a credit
card. The card fits into the slot in the back of the VCRS module.
If your program provider ever requires a TV Pass Card, you will need the
information about additional on-screen displays provided on this page.
NOTE: These displays only appear when you use the TV Pass Card system and
tune to a VideoCipher channel. The TV Pass Card is not currently
used by any program service and is not included with a VCRS module.
TV Pass Card Not Installed
"PLEASE INSERT A TV PASS CARD"
If PLEASE INSERT A TV PASS CARD appears on your screen, your program
provider has changed to the TV Pass Card system. If you do not have a TV
pass card, call your program provider.
Insert your TV pass Card into the opening in the back of the VCRS module
following the instructions that come with the card.
TV Pass Card Installation Error
