Getting Started
Choosing A Location
Place your TC-1010 in a location that provides free airflow over all its
sides. There should also be an AC power outlet close by.
Note: Do not plug in the power cord until you have made all other
connections.
Connecting An Indoor Antenna
For best reception in any area, we recommend a high quality outdoor
antenna. RadioShack offers a wide selection of TV antennas. Ask the
salesperson the size and type best for your area.
If you do not yet have an outdoor antenna, you can use the supplied indoor
antennas. They provide adequate reception in many areas.
1. Insert the post of the VHF dipole into the socket on top of the TV,
and snap the UHF bow-tie antenna onto one element of the VHF antenna.
2. Connect the VHF lead to the supplied 300-to-75 Ohm transformer.
3. Press the transformer onto the TV's 75 Ohm jack.
4. Connect the UHF leads to the two UHF screw terminals on the back of
the TV.
5. Position both antennas for best reception.
Connecting An Outdoor Antenna
1. If you are using a combination VHF/UHF antenna, connect the VHF/UHF
splitter supplied with your antenna to the antenna lead.
If your antenna was not supplied with such a splitter. Radio Shack
sells several types for this purpose.
Note: Do not connect an outdoor and an indoor antenna to the same
terminals (VHF or UHF) at the same time.
2. Connect the antenna or splitter's VHF lead to the 75-Ohm input on the
back of the television. Use the supplied 300-to-75 Ohm transformer if
necessary.
3. Connect the antenna or splitter's UHF lead to the two UHF screw
terminals.
Basic Operation
After making the basic antenna connections, plug the power cord into an
AC outlet.
1. Turn the TC-1010 on by pressing the front panel (POWER) button.
2. Press (TV/VIDEO) so that a two-digit channel number appears.
3. Set (TV/CATV) out for TV.
4. Press a channel selector button (Up or Down Arrow) on the TC-1010 to
scan through the channels until the desired channel number appears.
5. Adjust VOL, PICTURE, TINT, COLOR, and BRIGHTNESS for best picture and
sound.
Selecting The Cable System Type
If you use the built-in cable-ready tuner and some cable channels tune
poorly, you might improve reception by setting the CATV switch, on the
back of the TV, to the HRC or IRC position, rather than the STD position.
This switch matches your tuner to different types of cable systems. Set
the switch to the position that gives best reception and easiest tuning.
Cable TV Connections
There are two things to consider when connecting your TV to a cable system.
Are you receiving scrambled channels?
Does the system use more channels than the TV can tune (40 channels for
the TC-1010)?
If you do not receive scrambled channels, and the cable company uses 40 or
fewer channels, connect the cable TV coaxial lead directly to the TV's VHF
antenna terminal as shown in Connection A. Press (TV/CATV) in to CATV,
and select stations using the TC-1010 built-in tuner.
CAUTION: Some cities and states have laws restricting direct connections
to cable wires (connections that do not go through the cable
box). Check the laws in your area before making any connections.
If you receive scrambled channels or the cable company uses channels
outside the TV's tuning range, use Connection B.
To tune non-scrambled channels, press the (A) button on the switch, and
press (TV/CATV) in to CATV. To tune premium pay cable channels
(or channels outside the TV's tuning range), set the TV to Channel 3 or
4, press the (B) button on the switch, and use the cable box to select
your channel.
If the (HRC/IRC/STD) switch is set to HRC, you might have to set the
(TV/CATV) switch to TV when using the cable box to select your channel.
"Note to CATV system installer"
This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer's attention to
Article 820-22 of the National Electrical Code that provides guidelines
for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground
shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to
the point of cable entry as practical."
Connecting To The Video/audio Inputs
To connect video or audio components to the TC-1010, connect the separate
AUDIO and VIDEO IN/OUT jacks to the audio and video jacks on the video
equipment, using shielded video cable with RCA-type connectors. Do not
use audio cable for this connection.
When you use separate audio/video signals, you can use one or more audio/
video processors. These devices can greatly improve the quality of your
viewing and listening.See the instruction manuals for your VCR and other
audio/video equipment for details on connections.
Notes: Do not connect an antenna or cable TV signal to the AUDIO/VIDEO
jacks.
When using separate audio/video signals, select the video input
mode by pressing (VIDEO) - a P appears on the channel display.
Processing Antenna/Cable Broadcasts
The station selected by the TC-1010's tuner is always available at the
AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks. This makes it possible to use audio/video
processors to improve broadcast/cable programs directly, without going
through a VCR.
The drawing above shows one way you can do this - the processors are
connected in a loop between the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT and AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks.
Select the channel you want to process. Then press (VIDEO) to view the
processed signal - a P appears on the channel display.
Note: Because most audio/video processors have two inputs (A/B), you can
use this setup for direct processing of broadcast/cable programs
and still process the playback signals from your VCR or disc player
without changing connections.
