press a function button (such as STOP), the selected function's indicator
appears on the TV screen.

    STOP

When you change the channel, the new channel number appears on the TV
screen for about 3 seconds.

NOTE: If you play back a poor quality (worn) or damaged tape, the
function indicator might not appear on the VCR's display.

CHANGING THE TAPE'S DIRECTION/PLAYBACK SPEED

You can use the shuttle dial on the VCR and buttons on the VCR and remote
control to change the tape's direction and vary the playback speed.

NOTE: The shuttle dial does not rotate 360 (degrees). Do not force it
past the point where it stops.

Fast-Forward/Rewind

To advance the tape quickly when it is stopped, press FF on the remote
control, or turn the shuttle dial fully clockwise then release it.

To rewind the tape quickly when it is stopped, press REW on the remote
control, or turn the shuttle dial fully counterclockwise then release it.

Note: You cannot view the tape or hear the tape's sound while you fast
-forward and rewind it.

Quick-Motion

To double the VCR's playback speed during playback, turn the shuttle dial
fully clockwise then release it.

To return to the normal playback speed, press PLAY.

NOTES: During quick-motion, the VCR mutes the sound and the picture
quality is lower than during normal playback. The picture quality
is best with recordings made at the SP speed.

If you leave the tape in quick-motion, it plays until it reaches
the end of the tape. Then the VCR automatically stops, rewinds
then ejects the tape, then turns itself off.

Freeze-Frame

Freeze-frame lets you stop the tape to view a single frame.

To freeze a frame during playback, press PAUSE/STILL. To advance the
picture one frame at a time, repeatedly press PAUSE/STILL.

To return to the normal playback speed, press PLAY.

NOTES: During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than during
normal playback. The picture quality is best with recordings made
        at the SP speed.

If you leave the VCR in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, the
VCR automatically returns to normal playback to protect the tape.

If a horizontal bar appears, adjust the tracking in the slow-
motion mode (see "Adjusting the Tracking Manually" and "Variable-
        Speed Slow Motion", below).

To reduce or eliminate jitter during freeze-frame, press and hold
down CHANNEL (+) or (-) on the VCR until the picture is clear.

Visual Search

Visual search lets you view a recording either forward or backward at a
faster speed so you can find a specific section of the tape. The VCR has
slow and fast visual search speeds. You can use the shuttle dial or
remote control to control the search speed.

To slowly search forward during playback, press FF once on the remote
control or turn the shuttle dial clockwise about halfway and hold it. To
increase the search speed, press FF again on the remote control or turn
the shuttle dial fully clockwise.

To slowly search backward during playback, press REW once on the remote
control or turn the shuttle dial counterclockwise about halfway and hold
it. To increase the search speed, press REW again on the remote control
or turn the shuttle dial fully counterclockwise.

To stop visual search and play the tape, press PLAY or release the shuttle
dial.

NOTES: VCR must appear on the VCR's display to use visual search.

During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture quality
is lower than during normal playback. The search picture is best
with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed.

You can also search backward from the freeze-frame mode. During
freeze-frame, turn the shuttle dial counterclockwise about halfway
and hold it to search backward. Release the shuttle dial to
return to freeze-frame. You cannot search forward from the
        freeze-frame mode.

Variable-Speed Slow Motion

You can use the shuttle dial or the remote control to start slow motion
and vary the playback speed.

To start slow-motion at 1/30 of the normal playback speed, press PAUSE/
STILL to pause the tape during playback, then turn the shuttle dial
clockwise about halfway and hold it. For playback at 1/10 of the normal
playback speed, turn the shuttle dial fully clockwise and hold it.

To return to normal playback, release the shuttle dial, then press PLAY.

To control variable speed slow motion using the remote control, press SLOW
on the remote control during playback, freeze-frame, quick-motion, or
visual search. Then press SLOW/DPSS (+) or (-) to vary the speed from
1/30 to 1/5 of the normal playback speed.

Press PLAY to resume normal playback.

NOTES: During slow motion, the sound is muted and the picture quality is
lower than during normal playback. The slow motion picture
quality is best with tapes recorded at the SP or EP speed.

If you leave the VCR in the slow-motion mode for 5 minutes, the
VCR automatically returns to normal playback, to protect the VCR's
        heads.

If the slow-motion picture is poor, adjust the tracking on the VCR
by repeatedly pressing CH (+) and (-) (see "Adjusting the Tracking
        Manually" below).

To reduce or eliminate jitter in a slow-motion picture, press
PAUSE/STILL, then press and hold down CHANNEL (+) OR (-) on the
VCR until the picture is clear.

FAST-RESPONSE SYSTEM

When you load a tape that still has its erase-protection tab (see "Erase
Protection" on Faxback Doc. # 31884), the VCR positions the tape next to
the record/playback head for about 5 minutes. Within this period, you can
immediately start playback, recording, rewind, or fast-forward by pressing
the appropriate button.

When you stop the tape during playback, recording, rewind, or fast-
forward, the tape remains positioned next to the record/playback head for
about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, the fast-response system releases to
protect the tape.

USING THE REAL-TIME COUNTER

Your VCR's real-time counter shows how long a tape has been running. To
display the real-time counter, repeatedly press DISPLAY on the remote
control until the counter appears on the VCR's display.

NOTES: The real-time counter might stop if you fast-forward or rewind
through a blank section on the tape. This is normal.

You can press CANCEL on the remote control to reset the counter to
        0:00:00.

Using the Zero Back Function

You can reset the real-time counter to 0:00:00 at any position on the
tape, then return to that position.

Follow these steps to use the zero back function.

1. During playback, repeatedly press DISPLAY on the remote control to
    display the real-time counter.

2. When you see the location on the tape that you want to return to
later, press CANCEL on the remote control. The real-time counter
    resets to 0:00:00.

3. To return to the location you selected in Step 2, press ZERO BACK. The
tape rewinds or fast-forwards and automatically stops at 0:00:01 on
    the display.

NOTES: If you rewind the tape past 0:00:00, the display shows the count
        with a minus (-) sign.

The counter does not work with blank tapes or blank portions of
partially recorded tapes, or if you remove the tape.

TRACKING

Auto Tracking

The VCR automatically adjusts tracking when you play a tape. TRACKING
flashes on the TV screen while the VCR is adjusting the tracking.

When different parts of the tape are recorded at different speeds, the VCR
automatically readjusts the tracking at the beginning of each recording.

Adjusting the Tracking Manually

If the VCR's picture is poor, press and hold down CHANNEL (+) or (-) on
the VCR to manually adjust the tracking. Press CHANNEL (+) and (-) on the
VCR at the same time to return to automatic tracking.

NOTES: If the sound of a recording made on another VHS Hi-Fi VCR is poor,
you might be able to improve it by adjusting the tracking. If the
tracking is set incorrectly, the L/R stereo indicators do not
        appear on the display.

If a tape you are watching was recorded at the EP speed on another
VCR, the picture might jitter even after you set the tracking
manually. To reduce or eliminate the jitter, press and hold down
        PLAY for about 2 seconds.

When you eject a tape, the VCR resets to auto tracking and erases
any manual tracking adjustments you made.

IMPROVING PLAYBACK OF OLDER (WORN)/DAMAGED TAPES

The VCR's A.I. (artificial intelligence) picture system reduces the on-
screen noise you might see when you play back older, partially
demagnetized tapes (such as tapes with a high frequency of usage, like
rental videos).

NOTE: When A.I.PICTURE is ON, the image itself might not be as sharp.

Follow these steps to improve playback of older/damaged tapes.

1. From the main menu display, press 4 on the remote control to select
    SET UP.

2. Press 5 on the remote control to select A.I.PICTURE. A.I.PICTURE is
highlighted, and the currently selected option (OFF or ON) flashes.

3. Press CH (+) or (-) on the remote control to select the option you
    want.

4. Either wait 1 minute or press MENU. The screen disappears.

USING SKIP SEARCH AND INSTANT REPLAY

Skip search and instant replay quickly move the tape during playback so
you can quickly skip past commercials on a prerecorded tape or replay
certain scenes.

During playback, press SKIP SEARCH on the remote control to search forward
for 30 seconds. Repeatedly press SKIP SEARCH to advance the search time
in 30-second increments, up to 120 seconds.

During playback, press INSTANT REPLAY on the remote control to search
backward for 30 seconds. Repeatedly press INSTANT REPLAY to advance the
search time in 30-second increments, up to 120 seconds.

The VCR resumes normal playback at the end of the search.

USING INDEX SEARCH

Your VCR has the Digital Program Search System (DPSS). When you start
recording, the VCR automatically marks the tape with an index signal, and
DPSS ENTER might flash on the TV screen (see "Recording" on Faxback
Doc. # 31884).

You can use the index search function to:

Return to the beginning of the current recording

Skip to the beginning of the next program

Locate a particular recording, if there are several recordings on a
    tape

The VCR can search for up to 9 index signals.

NOTE: To make it easier to locate a particular recording, we recommend
you list the index numbers of each recording on the tape's box.

While the VCR is stopped or during playback, repeatedly press SLOW/DPSS
(+) (to search forward) or SLOW/DPSS (-) (to search backward) on the
remote control until the number of recordings you want to skip appears on
the TV's screen.

For example, if the tape is at recording 2 and you want to watch recording
8, press SLOW/DPSS (+) 5 times (to skip past recordings 3 through 7). Or,
if the tape is at recording 9 and you want to watch recording 4, press
SLOW/DPSS (-) 6 times (to skip past recordings 9 through 5).

Each time you press SLOW/DPSS (+) or (-), the VCR finds the next index
signal and automatically starts playback.

NOTE: The only way to add an index signal to a tape is to start a new
recording. The only way to erase an index signal is to record over
       it.

USING MODE LOCK

You can lock in any selected operating mode on the VCR (including power
off) to prevent accidentally changing to another mode or to prevent small
children from operating the VCR. All modes remain locked until you
release the lock using the remote control.

NOTE: The VCR still automatically releases a tape from freeze-frame and
record/pause when mode lock is turned on.

To turn on mode lock, press and hold down MODE LOCK on the remote control
until (key symbol) lights steadily on the VCR's display.

If any button on the VCR or remote control (except MODE LOCK) is pressed,
(key symbol) flashes and the button does not function. If you try to load
a tape, the VCR draws it in, then ejects it.

To release mode lock, press and hold down MODE LOCK until (key symbol)
disappears.
