Model 43 Stereo Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0613) Recording Faxback Doc. # 32921

The remote control has two (REC) buttons. You must press both buttons to
activate recording from the remote control. This safety feature helps
prevent accidental erasure of a tape.

Although they do not affect recording, the HI-FI OUTPUT MODE switch and the
PB SELECT switch do affect what you hear when monitoring the recording. See
"Controlling VCR inputs & Outputs", on Faxback Doc. # 32917.

The level meters are controlled by a sophisticated circuit that
automatically adjusts the recording level while maintaining the high
dynamic range characteristics of VHS Hi-FI recording. You can turn off the
meters by setting the LEVEL METERS switch to OFF, but the recording level
is still automatically controlled.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and the
life of the VCR. Use only tapes that have the official VHS logo.

High-grade tapes give best results, especially at the EP speed. They also
have better oxide coatings that help prevent dirty video heads.

Although T-160 tapes offer the longest recording time, they contain thinner
tape that is more likely to cause tape jams. We suggest that you use T-120,
or shorter, tapes.

Below is a chart that shows the maximum recording times for different
length tapes at the three recording speeds.

Cassette Indication T-60 T-120 T-160

and delayed.

Immediate QTR lets you start the recording manually by pressing a single
button. Then, recording stops automatically after the length of time you
select - 30 minutes to four hours.

Delayed QTR allows you to set recording to start any time within the
following 24-hour period. Then, as with immediate QTR, the recording stops automatically after the length of time you select - 30 minutes to four
hours.

You cannot use immediate QTR when the VCR is programmed for delayed QTR.

Immediate Quick Timer Recording

In the following example, the VCR is set to record Channel 8 for two hours.

1. Press (POWER) so that the POWER indicator lights.

2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on
    the back of the VCR.

3. Press (TV/VCR) so that VCR appears on the display.

NOTE: Steps 2 and 3 are not necessary but are suggested because they
allow you to confirm recording of the desired program.

4. Insert a blank cassette, or one you want to record over, into the
    cassette compartment.

The erase prevention tab must be in place, or the hole must be covered
with tape. See "Video Cassette Handling", on Faxback Doc. # 32918.

5. Set the INPUT SELECT switch for the desired input.

6. If you are recording an MTS broadcast, set the MTS switch as desired.

if automatic timer recording is in progress, the QTR indicator flashes,
    and recording cannot take place.

During QTR recording, the display shows the remaining recording time
unless you press (CLOCK) or (MEMORY/COUNTER) to change the display
mode. Press (REC TIME) once to return to the remaining-time display.

You can clear the QTR memory by pressing (CLEAR).

VCR power remains on at the end of QTR.

You can press (PAUSE) to stop QTR but the timer recording is canceled.

The (TAPE SPEED) button is active during QTR, but you should not change
the speed while a recording is in progress.

    SIMUL.

4. If you are recording an MTS broadcast, set the MTS switch as desired.

5. Press (POWER) to turn off the VCR. The timer indicator (SYMBOL) and
the numbers of the set timer programs appear on the display. This is
the timer mode and timer recordings are made at the set times.

You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times, but
the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is off at
the set start-time(s).

Automatic Timer Recording Hints

If there is a power failure or the VCR is unplugged for more than five
minutes, the clock setting and all timer settings are lost.

If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer
    recording, the recording is canceled.

If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts first has priority.
When the first program ends, the VCR switches to record the remainder
    of the second program.

Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording.

1. Turn on the TV, and set its tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL
    switch on the VCR.

2. Press (TV/VCR) so that VCR appears on the display.

Checking Timer Programs

1. Press (PROG). The on-screen menu appears on the TV and/or TIMER CHECK
    flashes on the VCR display.

2. Press (ENTER). Programs No. 1's settings are displayed on the TV
screen and/or on the VCR display.

3. Press (DOWN) or (UP) until the desired program information is
    displayed.

Changing/Clearing a Timer Program

To change a timer program, simply repeat the steps for setting the program.
The new times replace the old ones.

To clear a timer program, press (CLEAR) when the program information is
displayed in the timer-setting mode.

RECORDING FROM ONE VCR TO ANOTHER

The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing.

You can use VHF signals to make such recordings, but separate audio/video
signals are preferred.

Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors, such as
Cat. No. 15-1537. Do not use standard Hi-Fi patch cords.

You can use a video disc player, satellite receiver, or other unit with A/V
outputs in place of the playback VCR.

Connections

Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the
corresponding video and AUDIO IN jacks on the Model 43.

Playback VCR Setup

Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.

Model 43 Setup

1. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the
    cassette compartment.

2. Set the INPUT SELECT switch to A/V.

3. Press (TAPE SPEED) until the desired recording speed is displayed - EP,
    LP, or SP.

Recording

1. Press (RECORD) on the Model 43.

1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 43, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 43 CHANNEL switch.

2. Press (TV/VCR) on the Model 43 so that VCR appears on the display.

RECORDING SIMULCASTS

For simulcasts, the stereo sound for a TV program is broadcast on the radio
at the same time as the TV program is shown. Some cable companies use the
same procedure, except that the radio signal is carried through the cable
wire instead of through the air.

In either case, use the following steps to record the program with stereo
sound.

1. Connect the tape-out jacks of your stereo receiver to the AUDIO INPUT
    jacks of your VCR.

2. Turn on the TV, VCR, and stereo receiver.

3. Insert a blank tape, or one you want to record over, into the cassette
    compartment.

4. Set the INPUT SELECT switch to SIMUL.

5. Press (TAPE SPEED) until the desired recording speed is displayed.

6. Tune the receiver to the radio station for the audio.

7. Use the (CHANNEL) buttons or the remote control number buttons to
select the channel for the video.
