Model 43 Stereo Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0613) Operation Faxback Doc. # 32917

PLAYING A PRE-RECORDED TAPE

1. Plug in and turn on the TV and the VCR.

2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the CHANNEL switch on the back
of the VCR - either 3 or 4.

    See "CHANNEL SWITCH", below.

3. Insert a pre-recorded VHS tape into the cassette compartment. If the
erase prevention tab has been removed from the cassette, playback
    begins automatically.

    See "Video Cassette Handling", below.

4. If the tape is recorded with stereo hi-fi sound, set the PB SELECT
switch to Hi-Fi (AUTO) and the Hi-Fi OUTPUT MODE switch to STEREO.
See "Controlling VCR Inputs & Outputs", below.

5. If playback does not begin automatically, press (PLAY).

6. Adjust the PICTURE control to obtain the desired picture quality. See
"Special Recording/Playback Functions", on Faxback Doc. # 32923.

Press (STOP) to stop playback. Press (EJECT) to remove the tape.

NORMAL TV VIEWING

To watch TV as usual:

1. Turn on the TV.

2. Turn off the VCR, or press (TV/VCR) so that VCR does not appear on the
display. The antenna or cable signals pass through the VCR unaffected,
as if they are connected directly to the TV.

3. Select the desired channel, using the TV tuner or the cable box.

VIDEO CASSETTE HANDLING

1. Insert the cassette into the cassette compartment with the side label
up and the spine label facing out.

CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the
              cassette compartment.

2. Push in gently on the center of the cassette spine until the VCR draws
the cassette in completely. The tape-in (SYMBOL) indicator lights
steadily when the tape is in.

If power is not already on, it turns on automatically when a tape is
    inserted.

NOTE: Occasionally a tape is wound too tightly. It might not load
properly, and ejects automatically. You can loosen the tape by
pressing the brake-release plunger located on the bottom-center
of the cassette. Use the tip of a pen or pencil to press the
           plunger.

Removing a Cassette

1. With the power on, press (EJECT).

2. When the tape-in indicator (SYMBOL) goes off, remove the cassette from
    the compartment.

NOTE: Unless you are making an automatic timer recording, eject and
store the cassette before turning off the VCR.

Cassette Storage

Store video cassettes in their protective boxes in a cool, dry, dust-free
environment. Use video cassette racks that hold the cassettes on end,
not on their sides. This prevents improper settling of the spool of tape.

Erase Protection Tab

Video cassettes have an erase protection feature to prevent accidental
erasure of a tape. If the erase protection tab is missing, the VCR cannot
record on the tape. The tape is ejected if you try to record on it.

If you want to record on a tape that does not have the tab, put a piece of
heavy plastic tape over the tab hole.

CONTROLLING VCR INPUTS & OUTPUTS

The CHANNEL switch, (TV/VCR) button, INPUT SELECT switch, MTS switch, Hi-Fi
OUTPUT MODE SELECT switch, and the PB SELECT switch work together to
control the input and output signals of the Model 43. This is important
during recording or when you use the VCR tuner to select the program you
want to watch. Be sure you understand the function of each control and how
each one affects the others.

CHANNEL SWITCH

During playback, the video tape signals are sent from the VHF/UHF OUTPUT
terminal to the TV on the channel you select using the CHANNEL switch
(Channel 3 or 4). The tape signals are also sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT
jacks.

If a video tape is not playing and you press (TV/VCR) so that VCR appears
on the display, the signals you select using the INPUT SELECT switch are
sent to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal on the channel you select using the
CHANNEL switch. The same signals are sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks.

The CHANNEL switch has no effect on VHF/UHF output signal when the VCR is
off or when VCR does not appear on the display.

TV/VCR BUTTON

When VCR appears on the display, the source you select using the INPUT
SELECT switch is sent to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal (Channel 3 or 4).

When VCR does not appear on the display, antenna or cable signals connected
to the VHF/UHF INPUT terminal pass through to the VHF/UHF OUTPUT terminal
unaffected. You can use the TV tuner to select channels as if the signals
were directly connected to the TV.

If the VCR is turned on, the source you select using the INPUT SELECT
switch is sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, regardless of the TV/VCR mode.

INPUT SELECT SWITCH

Use the INPUT SELECT switch to select the signals you want to record and,
when power is on, the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT signals. The INPUT SELECT switch
controls the VHF/UHF OUTPUT signals only when you press (TV/VCR) so that
VCR appears on the display. The effects of the three INPUT SELECT settings
are shown in the following chart.

Switch Setting Video Source Recorded Audio Source Recorded

TUNER TUNER channel TUNER channel

SIMULCAST TUNER channel AUDIO INPUT signal

MTS SWITCH

Use the MTS switch to select the audio that is recorded when you set the
INPUT SELECT switch to TUNER and MTS stereo signals are received. The MTS
switch has no effect on A/V or SIMUL-mode recording, or on mono broadcast
recordings. The following chart shows the left and right channel content
for each of the switch settings.

Switch Setting Type of Broadcast Tuner Selected Audio Regular

* Special Audio Program

The sound you hear during recording or playback might also be affected by
the Hi-Fi OUTPUT MODE switch or the PB SELECT switch. See "How the Tuner
Works", below, for more information about MTS and SAP signal reception.

HI-FI OUTPUT MODE SWITCH

Use the HI-FI OUTPUT MODE switch to control the sound you hear during
recording or playback. The switch is especially useful when the main signal
is on the left channel and a different SAP signal is on the right. The
following chart shows the available audio options.

VCR Output Switch Setting

STEREO Left and right channels combined
                                          (mono)

VHF Output L Left channel only

                     R Right channel only

STEREO Left channel from L output,
                                          right from R

AUDIO OUTPUT L Left channel from L and R
                                          outputs

                     R Right channel from L and R
                                          outputs

The HI-FI OUTPUT MODE switch has no effect on mono signals.

PB SELECT SWITCH

Use this switch to select monitoring of the signal from the stereo HI-FI
audio tracks or from the normal mono audio track.

If a tape has only a normal audio track, it is played regardless of the
setting of the PB SELECT switch.

HOW THE TUNER WORKS

The Model 43's 111-channel PLL is active when you set the INPUT SELECT
switch (located in the front-panel control compartment) to TUNER and the
power is on. The tuner has two functions.

It lets you select what is recorded by the VCR.

It lets you select the output of the VCR when neither recording nor
playback is in progress and you press (TV/VCR) so that VCR appears on
    the display.

The tuner has no affect on recording or VCR output when you set the INPUT
SELECT switch to A/V or the power is off.

SETTING THE TV/CATV SWITCH

The tuner is capable of receiving VHF/UHF channels (2-83) or cable channels
(1-36 and 95-99), depending on the setting of the TV/CATV switch. (The TV/
CATV switch is in the control compartment on the front panel.

When you set the TV/CATV switch to TV, the tuner selects VHF/UHF channels
- when you set it to CATV, the tuner selects cable channels.

CHANNEL SELECTION

There are two methods of channel selection: scanning and direct.

To scan for a channel press one of the CHANNEL (/\ \/) buttons. The tuner
automatically advances to, and locks on, the next active channel in the
direction of the button's arrow.

When the tuner reaches the top of its range (channel 83, for example) the
tuner wraps to the bottom of the range. And, when the tuner reaches the
bottom of its range, (channel 2, for example) the tuner wraps to the top
of the range.

The tuner does not lock onto scrambled cable channels.

To directly select a channel you must use the remote control. Simply press
the number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit
channel numbers with a zero (01, 02, 03, and so on).

With direct selection, you can choose any channel in the tuner's range,
even if there is no broadcast present or if the channel is scrambled. (The
tuner does not unscramble the channel).

CABLE CHANNEL DESIGNATIONS

The Model 43 VCR is capable of receiving 41 cable channels. The channels
are displayed as 1-36, and 95-99.

Channels 2-13 are actually the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable
companies usually number them as they appear on the display.

However, cable companies often designate the other channels with letters or
letter-number combinations.

We suggest that you call your cable company for more information. Even so,
you still might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel
designations for your cable system.

STEREO AND SAP BROADCAST RECEPTION

The MTS (multi-channel television sound) decoder built into the VCR tuner
automatically indicates when stereo and/or SAP (special audio program)
signals are received.

The STEREO Indicator lights when a stereo signal is received.

The SAP Indicator lights when an SAP signal is received with a mono
    main signal.

The STEREO and SAP indicators light when an SAP signal is received with
    a stereo main signal

However, the MTS switch, the HI-FI OUTPUT MODE switch, and the PB SELECT
switch control what you hear and/or what is recorded. For example, if the
MTS switch is set to MONO, the recorded signal is mono, even if the STEREO
indicator is on.

See "Controlling VCR Inputs & Outputs", above.
