Model 108 4-Head VHS HQ VCR Hi-Fi Stereo VCR
(160-0545) VCR Setup Faxback Doc. # 31887

SETTING THE VCR'S OUTPUT CHANNEL SWITCH

Set the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (on the back of the VCR) to 3 or 4,
whichever is not an active channel in your area.

When VCR appears on the display, the VCR sends the signal from the video
source connected to its VHF/UHF CATV IN or AUDIO/VIDEO IN terminals to the
TV on the channel you selected.

NOTE: The OUTPUT CHANNEL switch has no effect on the TV when the VCR is
off or if you are using a TV that has separate audio/video input
jacks and that is set to the video mode.

REMOTE CONTROL

Installing the Batteries

The remote control requires two AA batteries (not supplied). For the
longest operation and best performance, we recommend alkaline batteries
(such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-557).

CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.

Never leave dead batteries in the remote control.

Dispose of dead batteries promptly and properly; do not bury or
           burn them.

1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it in the
direction of the arrow to remove it.

2. Insert fresh batteries into the compartment, as indicated by the
    polarity symbols ( + and - ) marked inside.

3. Replace the cover.

NOTE: If the remote control does not work or operates poorly, replace both
batteries. If it does not operate properly even after replacing
batteries, remove the batteries, wait 5 minutes, then re-install
       them.

    2:ESPANOL
    3:FRANCAIS

    SELECT =1-3  END=MENU

7. Either wait 1 minute or press MENU. The language setting menu
disappears, and you might see - - | - - on the VCR's display (see
    "Setting the Clock", below).

SETTING THE CLOCK

NOTE: Your VCR has a special memory sentinel feature that protects clock
settings, tuner programming information, and time memory settings for
up to 1 hour in case a power failure occurs or the power cord is
unplugged. After about 1 hour without power, the VCR loses all
clock, tuner, and memory settings except any VCR Plus+ guide channels
you set (see "Setting the VCR Plus+ Guide Channels").

Using Automatic Clock Setting

The VCR can use Extended Data Service (EDS) signals to automatically set
the VCR's clock. EDS is a service provided by some broadcasters to transmit
various types of information including the current time.

When you plug in the VCR the first time or after a power failure, - - : - -
flashes on the display and the VCR starts to search for a channel that has
an EDS signal. If it finds one, it automatically sets the clock and shows
the current time on the display.

NOTES: When you turn on your VCR, it stops searching for an EDS signal
until you set it to search for a signal or turn the VCR off again.

Make sure you selected the input signal you want to use before you
set the VCR to automatically set the clock (see "Selecting the
        Input/Output Signal", below).

If you are using a cable box, make sure you selected the TUNER, BOX
OUTPUT, and BOX CODE settings before you set the VCR to
automatically set the clock. After you select the settings, leave
the cable box on and turn off the VCR. See "Selecting the Input/Out
       signal", below.

If the channels in your area do not carry EDS signals, or if you
want to use timer recording immediately, you must set the clock
manually (see "Setting the Clock Manually", below).

1. Press MENU on the remote control to select the main menu display. The
menu display appears on the TV screen.

2. Press 4 on the remote control to select SET UP. The set up menu
    appears on the TV screen.

3. Press 6 (for the Model 108) or 8 (for the Model 59) on the remote
control to select AUTO CLOCK SET. AUTO CLOCK SET is highlighted.

4. Press CH (+) or (-) to select the auto clock set up menu. The menu
appears on the TV screen. AUTO CLOCK SET is highlighted, and the
currently set option (ON or OFF) flashes.

NOTE: If OFF flashes, repeatedly press CH (+) until ON flashes.

5. Press 2 on the remote control to select EDS CH SET. EDS CH SET is
highlighted, and the currently set option (AUTO or a channel number)
    flashes.

If you are not sure which channel carries the EDS signal, repeatedly
press CH (+) or (-) until AUTO flashes.

6. If you know which channel carries the EDS signal, repeatedly press CH
(+) and (-) until that channel number is displayed.

7. Either wait 1 minute or press MENU. The screen disappears.

NOTES: If AUTO CLOCK SET is set to ON and you connected a cable box to the
VCR (see " If you Have Cable"), the VCR will send a signal to the
cable box to automatically select a channel that broadcasts an EDS
signal (if available) when you turn the VCR off.

If you select EDS CH SET and enter a channel that does not
broadcast an EDS signal, the VCR does not set the clock
        automatically.

The VCR might not set the clock automatically if the signal from
        your antenna is weak.

If you set EDS CH SET to AUTO in Step 5 and the VCR does not set
the clock automatically after a few hours, there are probably no
channels in your area that carry EDS signals. Set the clock
manually (see "Setting the Clock Manually").

The EDS channel you selected in Step 6 will be erased after a power
failure. You must re-enter the channel number after power is
        restored.

day, and year. For example, to set February 15, 1996, press 0, 2, 1,
    5, 9, and 6.

    NOTES: Precede a single-digit number with a 0- for example, 01, 02,
            etc.

If you enter an incorrect number, repeatedly press CH (+) and
(-) to move the flashing box to the incorrect number, then
            enter the correct number.

9. Use the number keys on the remote control to enter the correct hour
and minute. For example, to set 10:28, press 1, 0, 2, and 8.

10. Press 1 if the hour is an AM hour or 2 if the hour is a PM hour.
     D.S.T. is highlighted.

11. To set daylight saving time (DTS), press 1 (ON) or 2 (OFF).

When D.S.T. is set to ON, the VCR automatically adds one hour to all
displayed times on the first Sunday in April, and subtracts one hour
from all displayed times on the last Sunday in October.

12. Review the entered information.

If it is not correct, repeatedly press CH (+) and (-) to move the
cursor to the incorrect information, then enter the correct
    information.

If it is correct, either wait 1 minute or press MENU. The screen
    disappears.

NOTE: If you enter an invalid date or time (for example, 13:00 for the
time), that entry flashes when you press MENU. Re-enter the correct
       date or time.

SELECTING THE INPUT/OUTPUT SIGNAL

If You Have Cable

If you have cable service and use a cable box, you can set up your VCR so
it automatically selects the cable box's output signal when you record.

If you have cable service and do not use a cable box, you must select one
of the CATV settings (STD, HRC, or IRC) from the TV/CATV menu, depending
on your type of cable service.

NOTE: Most cable systems use STD, but if you are not sure what type of
cable service you have, contact your cable company.

Follow these steps to select the input and output signal.

1. Turn on your TV and VCR.

2. Press MENU on the remote control to select the main menu display. The
menu display appears on the TV screen.

    (-) until VCR flashes.

Note: If you select CABLE BOX, the VCR's tuner is fixed to the cable's
output channel and does not change. When you press CHANNEL (+)/(-) or
CH (+)/(-) to change channels, the VCR sends that signal directly to
    the cable box.

5. Press 2 on the remote control to select TV/CATV. TV/CATV is
highlighted, and the currently selected option (TV, CATV-STD,
    CATV-HRC, or CATV-IRC) flashes.

    (02, 03, or 04) flashes.

9. Repeatedly press CH (+) or (-) to set BOX OUTPUT CH to the same
channel as your cable box's output channel. The output channel you
selected flashes on the screen and appears on the VCR's display.

10. If you cannot use a remote control to control your cable box, press
MENU on the remote control to exit the cable box set up mode, and stop
    here.

If you can use a remote control to control your cable box, press 3 on
the remote control to select BOX CODE. BOX CODE is highlighted, and
the currently selected cable box code (01-58) flashes.

11. Find your cable box's brand name in the chart to the right, then
repeatedly press CH (+) or (-) to select the corresponding code for
your cable box. The cable box code flashes on the display.

Note: Your cable box's brand name is usually listed on it's bottom or
back panel. Contact your cable service provider if you cannot find
    your cable box's brand name.

The following chart lists the available cable box codes.

12. Press 3 on the remote control. If you selected the correct cable box
code, the VCR changes the channel number displayed on your cable box
     from 02 to 09.

NOTES: If the channel number does not change, repeatedly press CH (+) or
(-) to select another code, then repeat Step 12.

Some of the manufacturers listed in the above chart have more than
one code. Try each code for the same manufacturer until the
channel number displayed on your cable box changes from 02 to 09.
If none of the codes work, try the following:

Reposition your VCR closer to, or in a more direct line-of-sight
to, your cable box. The VCR's signal might be blocked.

Try each code (01 through 58).

Ask your cable company for a cable box you can use with your VCR.

If none of the codes work, you can still use your VCR with VCR Plus+.
However, you cannot use the VCR to select the cable box's output
channel. To record cable channels, you must leave the cable box turned
on and manually select the channel you want to record.

13. Either wait 1 minute or press MENU. The setup menu disappears.

SETTING THE CHANNELS YOUR VCR CAN TUNE

You can program the tuner's memory so the VCR tunes only the active
channels in your area.

1. From the main menu display, press 4 on the remote control to select
SET UP. The set up menu appears on the TV screen. You can also press
SET UP on the VCR to display the setup menu.

or CATV) and memorizes all the active channels in your area. AUTO SET
appears on the TV screen, and the current channel number appears on
the TV screen and the VCR's display. After scanning all the channels,
the tuner stops on the lowest numbered active channel.

4. Repeatedly press CH (+) or (-) to review the channels you stored.

NOTE: You can directly select channels that are not in the tuner's memory
using the remote control's number buttons.

Adding/Erasing Channels

If a channel you want did not get automatically memorized, or if a channel
you do not want did get memorized, follow these steps to add or erase a
channel.

1. Use the number keys on the remote control to enter the channel number
you want to add or erase.

    NOTE: Precede a single-digit number with a 0, for example, 01, 02,
           etc.

2. From the main menu display, press 4 on the remote control to select
SET UP. The setup menu appears on the TV screen.

3. Press 4 on the remote control to select ADD/ERASE. ADD/ERASE is

     cable box. Precede a single-digit code with 0 - for example 01,
     02, etc.

NOTES: If you do not enter the code for your TV or cable box within 10
seconds, the remote control does not save the code. Simply start
again from Step 2 or Step 4.

The remote control will not operate some TVs and cable boxes. If
this happens, you must use the original remote control supplied
with your TV or cable box.

The codes you programmed might be erased if you remove the
batteries from the remote control. If the codes were erased, re-
enter the codes after you replace the batteries.

Your TV might have functions that the remote control will not
        operate.

To operate the VCR, TV, or cable box with the remote control, press the
corresponding button (VCR, TV, or CABLE) to switch to the desired device,
then press the desired function button.
