MODEL l57 4-Head VHS Stereo Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0627) Recording Faxback Doc. # 31727

There are four ways to record using your VCR - immediate recording, quick
timer recording, automatic timer recording, and dubbing.

Your VCR automatically records the audio signal and adjusts the sound
level while it records.

The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection tab
in place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects if you
try to record on it (see "Erase Protection", below).

RECORDING SPEEDS

There are three VHS recording/playback speeds: SP (short play), LP (long
play), and EP (extended play). Your VCR plays LP tapes but does not record
in LP.

SP (short play) is the fastest recording speed and results in the highest
quality picture. EP (extended play) records more slowly and uses less
tape, but the picture quality is not as high as with a recording made at
the SP speed.

However, your Model 57 has a special 26-micron record/play head that
improves the playback quality of recordings made at the EP speed. This
allows you to conserve tape when recording and still enjoy a high quality
picture during playback.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and the
life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official VHS
logo. High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty
video heads and gives the best results.

Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they
contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use T-120
or shorter length tape.

The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length
tapes at the two recording speeds.

      Tape Length SP EP

          T-60 1 hour (60 minutes) 3 hours (180 minutes)

          T-120 2 hours (120 minutes) 6 hours (360 minutes)

          T-160 2 2/3 hours (160 minutes) 8 hours (480 minutes)

NOTE: The Model 57 can play back tapes recorded in LP; however, it does
not record in LP.

ERASE PROTECTION

Video cassettes have an erase-protection tab to prevent accidental erasure
of a tape. To prevent recording, break off the tab using a screwdriver.
The cassette automatically ejects if you try to record on the tape.

If you want to record on a video cassette that does not have the tab, put
a piece of heavy plastic tape over the erase-protection tab hole.

IMMEDIATE RECORDING

You can record the same program you watch or record one program while you
watch another, depending on which connection you choose in "If You are
Using an Antenna" or "If You Have Cable", see Faxback Doc. # 31720.

NOTE: If you want to record from another VCR, a laser disc player, or
other audio/video source with A/V outputs, see "Dubbing", below.

Recording a Program as You Watch It

1. Turn on the VCR and the TV. If you have connected your VCR to the
TV's A/V inputs, set your TV to the video mode and skip steps 2 and 3.

2. Set the TV's tuner to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL
    switch.

3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control so VCR appears on the display.

4. Insert the tape you want to record on into the VCR.

5. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired recording
    speed (SP or EP).

6. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ or use the remote control's number buttons to
    select the desired channel.

7. Select the SAP mode to the desired mode in the SETUP menu. See
"Receiving Stereo/SAP Broadcasts", on Faxback Doc. # 31721.

8. Press RECORD.

You can press PAUSE/STILL during recording to temporarily pause
recording (during commercials, for example). To resume recording,
    press PAUSE/STILL again or RECORD.

NOTE: If you leave the VCR in the record pause mode for 5 minutes,
    the VCR automatically stops.

9. Press STOP to stop recording.

Recording One Program While You Watch Another

1. Follow Steps 1-8 of "Recording a Program As You Watch It", above.

2. Press TV/VCR so VCR does not appear on the VCR's display. If you have
connected your VCR to a TV's A/V inputs, set your TV to the TV mode.

3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch.

4. Press STOP to stop recording.

AUDIO-ONLY RECORDING

Because of the superior quality of VHS Hi-Fi audio recordings, you might
want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the
audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to
the VCR's front or rear AUDIO IN jacks. Then press INPUT to select AV 1
or 2, depending on whether you connected the audio source to the VCR's
rear or front input jacks.

You can also make live recordings by connecting a preamplifier or mixer to
the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. However, do not directly connect a microphone
to the VCR.

NOTE: For an audio only recording, you should make sure the VIDEO IN jack
is disconnected.

QUICK TIMER RECORDING

Quick Timer Recording (QTR) starts recording immediately and then
automatically stops after the length of time you select (from 1 minute to
24 hours within the next 24 hours). You need not supervise the VCR while
it is recording.

You can set the QTR program on the TV screen or on the VCR's display. The
instructions refer to the TV's on-screen display indicators. Some of the
indicators on the VCR's display vary slightly.

1. Follow Steps 1-8 of "Recording a Program as You Watch It", above.

2. Press RECORD. The recording stop time displays. Press RECORD
repeatedly to advance the timer display in 10-minute increments. Then
press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to set the exact end time. To ensure that you
record all of the desired program, set the end time a little later than
    the end of program.

QTR Hints

* QTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted or if the erase
    protection tab is removed.

* You can program QTR only in the stop or recording mode. You cannot
set QTR while a tape is playing back.

* The VCR's power turns off at the end of QTR.

* To cancel QTR in progress, press STOP.

* You can change the QTR end time by pressing RECORD.

* TAPE SPEED is active during QTR but should not be changed while the
    VCR records.

* You can check automatic program timer settings during QTR. See
    "Automatic Timer Recording", below.

* Be sure the tape length you select for QTR is long enough to record
the entire program. Even though you can select up to 24 hours of
recording, the recording time is limited by the tape's length. See
    "Tape Selection", above.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end recording
while you are away. You can set eight program timers to record a combi-
nation of weekly, daily, or one-time TV programs. You can record on a
specific day within a 1-year period (ONCE), the same time Monday through
Friday (DAILY), or the same day every week (WEEKLY).

You can set each program timer to record on a different channel and at a
different speed.

NOTE: You can only make an automatic timer recording when the VCR is off.
You cannot make an automatic timer recording when you are using any of the
VCR's other playback or recording functions.

Automatic timer recording consists of two steps: setting the program
timer and making the automatic timer recording.

Setting the Program Timer

You must use the remote control to set the program timer.

Be sure you correctly set the clock before you use automatic timer
recording.

In the following example, the VCR is set to record Channel 7 from 9:05 PM
to 10:35 PM on December 10, 1994, at the EP speed.

1. Insert the cassette you want to record on into the VCR. The VCR turns
    on.

2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT
CHANNEL switch. If you connected your VCR to the TV's A/V inputs, set
your TV to the video mode and skip step 3.

3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR appears on the display.

4. Set the SAP mode to ON or OFF, depending on whether or not you want to
record a SAP program. See "Receiving Stereo/SAP Broadcasts", on Faxback
    Doc. # 31721.

5. Press MENU on the remote control.

6. Press 1 to select TIMER.

7. Use the remote control's number buttons 1-8 to select the program
number. (Press 1 for program timer number 1.)

8. Use number buttons 1-3 to set the desired timer mode - ONCE, WEEKLY,
or DAILY. (Press 1 for ONCE.)

9. Use the number buttons to set the desired date. Precede single-digit
    entries with 0. (Press 1, 2, 1, and 0 to set December 10.)

NOTE: If you accidentally set the time to record on a date that is
before the VCR's clock date, the VCR considers the set time, date, and
day of the week to be for the next year.

10. Use the number buttons to set the start time. (Press 0, 9, 0, and 5
    to set 9:05.)

11. Press 1 to set an AM hour or press 2 to set a PM hour. (Press 2 to
    select PM.)

12. Press the number buttons to set the end time. (Press 1, 0, 3, and 5
    to set 10:35.)

13. Press the number buttons to select the channel number. (Press 0 and 7
    to select 7.)

14. Press number button 1 or 2 to select the tape speed (SP or EP).
    (Press 2 to select EP.)

15. Double-check all the set information.

* If it is correct, press MENU.

* If an entry is not correct, press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to move the cursor
to the wrong entry, enter the correct information, and then press MENU.

The TV screen displays the timer program settings.

16. Press MENU again to return to the normal display.

NOTE: If you want to exit the programming mode without storing the
    timer settings, press CANCEL.

Making an Automatic Timer Recording

After you set the automatic program timer(s), follow these steps to make
the recording(s).

1. Be sure the tape you want to record on is in the cassette compartment.

2. Press POWER to turn off the VCR. The timer indicator (TIMER) appears
on the display. This shows that the VCR is in the timer standby mode.
When a timer recording begins, the record indicator appears.

NOTE: You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times,
but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is off
at the set start time(s).

Automatic Timer Recording Hints

* If a power failure occurs or the VCR is unplugged for more than about
one hour, the VCR loses the clock setting and all timer settings.

* If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette,
    TIMER flashes.

* If you insert a cassette with its erase-protection tab removed and set
the VCR's timer, the cassette ejects and TIMER flashes on the display.

Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording

To monitor an automatic timer recording, turn on the TV and set it to the
same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch. Press TV/VCR until VCR
appears on the display. If you have connected your VCR to a TV's A/V
inputs, set your TV to the video mode.

Checking/Changing Program Timers

1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT
CHANNEL switch. If you have connected your VCR to a TVs A/V inputs,

3. Use number buttons 1-8 to select the program number you want to clear.

4. Press the CANCEL button on the remote control.

The programmed contents are canceled, and the program confirmation
    screen appears.

5. Press MENU to return to normal screen.

Turn off the VCR to enter the timer standby mode, if you still have timer
program(s) entered.

DUBBING

The process of recording from one audio/video device to another is called
dubbing.

You can use a VCR, camcorder, satellite receiver or other device with A/V
outputs as the dubbing source. Always use video-quality shielded cables
with phono-type connectors to connect the device to the Model 57.

Do not use standard audio patch cords.

NOTE: Most material on prerecorded tapes is copyrighted. Duplication of
copyrighted material could result in fines and/or imprisonment.

Connections for Dubbing (See Faxback Doc. # 31719)

You can connect the video and audio outputs of another VCR (or other
device) to the AV1 AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks on the rear of the VCR or the AV 2
AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks on the front of the VCR.

NOTE: If the playback VCR is mono, use a Y-adapter (available at your
local Radio Shack store) to connect the playback VCR's audio output to both
AUDIO IN jacks on the front or rear of the Model 57.

Dubbing a Video Cassette Tape

NOTE: For the best results during dubbing, hold the Model 57's remote
control close to the its receiver window (to the left of the VCR display)
when you press a button. Otherwise, the remote control might affect the
playback VCR's operation.

1. Prepare the audio/video source.

2. Insert a tape you want to record on into the Model 57's cassette
    compartment. See "Tape Selection", above.

3. Press INPUT on the remote control to select AV1 for the rear input
jacks. Press INPUT again to select AV2 for the front input jacks.

4. Press TAPE SPEED on the remote control to display the desired
    recording speed (SP or EP).

5. Press RECORD to begin recording.

6. Begin playback of the source recording.

7. Press STOP to stop recording on the Model 57. Otherwise, the Model 57
records to the end of the tape. Then stop the audio/video source.

Monitoring Dubbing

Turn on the TV connected to the VCR and set it to the same channel as the
VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch. Press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR
appears on the display.

If you connected the VCR to a TV's A/V inputs, set the TV to the video
mode.
