MODEL l57 4-Head VHS Stereo Hi-Fi VCR
(160-0627) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 31717

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Please read this owner's manual carefully. It has been prepared to help
you with initial setup procedures and in the everyday operation of your
VCR.

ACCESSORIES

Your VCR includes the following accessories. Be sure to remove these
items before you store the packing material.

* Remote Control - controls most of your VCR's functions.

* 75-ohm Coaxial Cable - connects the VCR's VHF/UHF OUT terminal to the
    TV's antenna terminals.

MOISTURE CONDENSATION

Condensation inside the VCR can cause tape jams or video head damage.
When you first install the Model 57 or when you move it from a cold area
to a warm one, let it sit for about 2 hours before you plug it in and begin
operation. This allows complete evaporation of any moisture inside the VCR
that could damage it.

NOTE: Do not use the Model 57 in areas of high humidity.

USING THIS MANUAL

This manual is organized into these major sections:

* Connections - describes the connections required to begin using your
    VCR.

* Preparation - includes procedures for preparing the remote control,
setting the on-screen programming language, setting the clock,
selecting TV/CATV, programming the tuner memory, and selecting a
    channel.

* Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs - explains how to select and view
the channels you watch and/or record.

* Viewing TV - explains how to watch TV using the VCR's or TV's tuner.

* Playing a Tape - gives basic instructions for playing tapes in your VCR
    and describes some special functions.

* Special Functions - describes special playback, display, search, and
    operation features.

* Recording - describes the different types of recordings and gives
    instructions for making each one.

* Additional Information - includes a troubleshooting section, care and
maintenance procedures, and the Model 57's specifications.

MANUAL CONVENTIONS

When reading through this manual, keep the following in mind:

* Some buttons on the remote control are duplicated on the VCR: you can
use these buttons to perform identical procedures. Other procedures
use only the VCR's buttons, or only the remote control's.

* The CHANNEL buttons on the VCR are labeled + and - and \/ and /\ on the
remote control. Since you use the remote control most often to change
settings and functions, the manual only refers to CHANNEL \/ and /\.
But you can use either the remote control's or the VCR's CHANNEL
    buttons interchangeable.

* All buttons and switches are in BOLD UPPERCASE letters.

* What appears on the TV screen or on the VCR's display is shown in this
    typeface: VCR

INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERIES

The remote control requires two AA batteries (not included) for operation.
We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552).

1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it in the
direction of the arrow to remove it.

2. Place the batteries in the compartment, as indicated by the polarity
symbols + and - marked inside.

3. Replace the cover.

NOTE: If the remote control does not work or operates poorly, replace
both batteries.

CAUTIONS:

* Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.

* Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that can
    damage electronic circuits.
