Model-84 VHS HQ VCR
(160-0522) Recording Faxback Doc. # 31340

The remote control has two [RECORD] buttons. You must press both buttons
to begin manual recording using the remote control. This safety feature
helps prevent accidental erasure of a tape.

TAPE SELECTION

The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and the
life of the VCR. Use only tapes that have the official VHS logo.

High-grade tapes give the best results, especially at the EP speed. They
also have a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video heads.

Although T-160 tapes offer the longest recording time, they contain thinner
tape that is more likely to stretch or cause tape jams. We suggest that
you use T-120, or shorter, tapes.

Below is a chart that shows the maximum recording times for different-
length tapes at the three recording speeds.

   Cassette T-60 T-120 T-160

QUICK TIMER RECORDING

Quick timer recording lets you start a recording manually by pressing a
single button. Recording begins immediately and stops automatically after
the length of time you select (30 minutes to four hours).

1. Be sure a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over, is in
the cassette compartment. The VCR automatically turns on.

If a cassette is already in the VCR, press [POWER], to turn on the VCR.

2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the VCR's 3CH/4CH
    switch.

If you have a TV monitor, set it to the video mode.

3. Press [TV/VCR] on the remote control unit so that VCR appears on the
    display.

4. Set the INPUT SELECT switch for the desired input.

5. Press [TAPE SPEED] to display the desired recording speed.

6. Select the channel you want to record, or prepare the A/V source you
    want to record.

NOTE: The tuner does not affect A/V source recording.

7. Press [QTR] twice to begin recording. The QTR indicator and 0:30
appears on the display. Then, press [QTR] repeatedly until the VCR
displays the desired recording length. The recording lengths are
    displayed as follows:

              0:30 - 1:00 - 1:30 - 2:00 - 2:30
              ...... 8:00 - clock display - 0:30 etc.

To ensure that you record all of the desired program, make the
recording length a little longer than the program material.

NOTE: Normal recording occurs when the clock display is shown.

QTR HINTS

QTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted, if the erase-
protection tab is removed, or if automatic timer recording is in
    progress.

During QTR recording, the display shows the remaining recording time
unless you press [CLOCK/COUNTER] to change the display mode. Press
[QTR] once to return to the remaining-time display.

    To cancel QTR, press [STOP].

VCR power turns off at the end of QTR.

You can use the [TV/VCR] button during QTR.

You can check automatic timer program settings during QTR. See
    "Automatic Timer Recording."

If the dew protection system stops VCR operation, QTR is cancelled.

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end recording
while you are away. Your VCR has six program timers. You can set five
events to record on a specific day within the next 14 days or once a day.
The sixth timer is for weekly recording to let you record the same day
every week. You can set each program to record on a different channel and
at a different recording speed.

Automatic timer recording consists of two steps: setting the timer and
making the automatic timer recording.

SETTING THE TIMER PROGRAMS

Be sure the clock is set to the correct time before you use automatic timer
recording.

In the example, timer program No. 1 is set to record Channel 32 at the EP
speed from 7:30 a.m. to 8:50 a.m. next Tuesday.

1. Insert a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over, into the
cassette compartment. The VCR turns on.

Turn on the TV, set it to set the same channel as the VCR's 3CH/4CH
switch, and press [TV/VCR] so that VCR appears on the display. If you
use a TV monitor, set it to the video mode.

2. Press [PROG.CHECK] on the VCR or [PROG.] on the remote control. The
programming menu for the first three programs appear on the TV screen.

3. Press [SET] repeatedly until the desired program number flashes (1, for
    example).

NOTES: You can display only three programs at a time on the TV screen
            (1-2-3 or 4-5-W).

To program a weekly recording, select program W.

4. Press [SELECT]. The day indicator flashes. Press [SET] repeatedly to
display the desired day (TUE, for example).

To program a recording to take place more than a week away, press [SET]
until the desired day and 2 appear on the screen.

To program a daily recording, press [SET] until DAY appears on the
    screen.

5. Press [SELECT]. The start-time hour digits flash.

Then, press [SET] repeatedly to display the desired start-time hour (AM
    7:00, for example).

6. Press [SELECT]. The start-time minute digits flash.

Then, press [SET] repeatedly to display the desired start-time minute
    (AM 7:30, for example).

7. Press [SELECT]. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 to set the end-time.

8. Press [SELECT]. The channel number digits flash.

Then, press [SET] to display the desired recording channel
    (32, for example).

NOTE: The preceding procedure lets you program recording only on
channels stored in the tuner's memory. If you want to record
a channel that is not stored in memory, use the remote control's
number buttons to select the channel BEFORE you press
           [PROG.CHECK] in Step 2.

9. Press [SELECT]. The tape speed indicator flashes.

Then, press [SET] to display the desired recording speed (EP, for
     example).

10. Check the programmed information to double-check all the set
     information.

If any item is not correct, press [SELECT] repeatedly until the
incorrect information flashes, then press [SET] to correct it.

If you want to program another timer recording, press [SELECT] so that
the program number flashes, and press [SET]. Then repeat Step 4
     through 10.

If you do not want to program another recording, press [PROG.CHECK] to
     exit the programming mode.

MAKING AN AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

After you set the automatic timer program(s), follow these steps to make
the recording(s).

1. Be sure a blank video cassette, or one that you want to record over, is
    in the cassette-compartment.

If the erase-protection tab has been removed, place a piece of plastic
    tape over the hole.

2. Set the INPUT SELECT switch to the desired position (TUNER or A/V).

3. Press [TIMER REC]. VCR's power goes off.

The TIMER indicator and the number(s) of the programmed event appear on
    the display.

You cannot turn on and operate the VCR manually when the VCR is in the
timer-record mode. If you want to use manual operation, press [TIMER REC]
to exit the timer-record mode. Then, be sure to press [TIMER REC] to
return the VCR to the timer-record mode before the set start-time(s).

AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING HINTS

If there is a power failure or the VCR is unplugged for more than a
few seconds, the clock setting and all timer settings are lost.

If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts first has priority.
When the first programs ends, the VCR switches to record the remainder
    of the second program.

You cannot press [TIMER REC] to enter the timer-record mode during QTR.

If you find that an automatic timer recording is going to end too soon,
you can press QTR to lengthen the recording time. QTR takes over
    without interruption.

If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer
    recording, the recording is cancelled.

If a tape is not loaded or the erase-protection tab is removed, the
TIMER indicator flashes and automatic timer recording cannot occur.
Press [TIMER REC] to stop the flashing. Then load a tape that allows
    recording.

MONITORING AN AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING

To monitor an automatic timer recording, turn on the TV and set its tuner
to the same channel as the VCR's 3CH/4CH switch. Press [TV/VCR] so that
VCR appears on the display. Or, if you use a TV monitor, set it to the
video mode.

CHECKING TIMER PROGRAMS

To check a timer on the TV screen when the VCR is in the timer-record mode,
turn on the TV. Press [TIMER REC] to exit the timer-record mode. Then,
press [PROG.CHECK]. The set information for Programs 1-3 appears.

Press [SET] repeatedly to display the information for programs 4-W. Be
sure to reactivate the timer-record mode by pressing [TIMER REC].

To check program information on the VCR display while in the timer mode,
press [PROG.CHECK]. Then press [SET] until the desired program number
appears. The start- and end-times for the selected program each appears on
the display for a few seconds. The recording channel and recording speed
also appear.

Press [SELECT] to manually switch between the display of the start-time and
end-time. Press [PROG.CHECK] again to return the display to the clock
mode.

To check a program when the VCR's power is on, perform the same steps you
used in setting the program. You can change program settings during this
procedure.

CHANGING A TIMER PROGRAM

To change a timer program, simply repeat the steps for setting the program.
The new times replace the old ones.

CLEARING A TIMER PROGRAM

A one-time (not daily or weekly) timer programs are automatically cleared
when the set start- and end-times occur, whether or not a recording is
made. However, if you want to clear a program manually:

1. With VCR's power on, press [PROG.CHECK].

2. Press [SET] until the desired program number appears.

3. Press [CANCEL]. The program information is erased.

4. Press [PROG.CHECK] to exit the timer-setting mode.

DUBBING

The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing.

You can use VHF signals to make such recordings, but separate audio/video
signals are preferred.

Always use video-quality shielded cables with RCA-type connectors. DO NOT
USE STANDARD AUDIO PATCH CORDS.

You can use a video disc player, satellite receiver, or other audio/video
component with A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR.

Connect the VIDEO and AUDIO IN jacks of the Model 84 to the corresponding
video and audio out jacks on the playback VCR.

TO DUB A VIDEO CASSETTE

1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR.

2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the
    Model 84's cassette compartment.

3. Set the INPUT SELECT switch to A/V.

4. Press [TAPE SPEED] to select the desired recording speed (EP, LP, or
    SP).

5. Press [RECORD] on the Model 84.

6. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR.

NOTE: For best results during dubbing, use the VCR's front panel controls
whenever possible. The Model 84's remote control might affect the
       playback VCR's operation.

MONITORING RECORDING

1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 84, and set it to the same
channel as the Model 84's 3CH/4CH switch.

2. Press [TV/VCR] on the Model 84 so that VCR appears on the display. Or,
set your TV monitor to the video mode.

TRACKING CONTROL

The TRACKING control lets you adjust your VCR for best playback of tapes
made on other machines. If the picture quality is poor, adjust this
control for best results. The center position is usually best for
recording and playback of tapes made on the Model 84.

FAST-FORWARD AND REWIND

Use [FAST-F] and [REWIND] when the VCR is in the stop mode to move the tape
quickly in the desired direction.

There is no picture or sound when you use [FAST-F] or [REWIND], but you can
use the counter and memory functions to locate specific sections of the
tape.

RECORD PAUSE

Use [PAUSE/STILL] during recording to edit out unwanted material, such as
commercials.

Simply press the button at the beginning of the unwanted material. The
tape stops temporarily. Press [PAUSE/STILL] again to resume recording.

Using [PAUSE/STILL] makes a smooth, almost unnoticeable edit. If you use
[STOP], there will be a glitch at that point.

NOTES: Pressing [PAUSE/STILL] during automatic timer recording has no
        effect.

If you leave the VCR in the record-pause mode for more than five
minutes, the VCR automatically returns to the record mode.

AUTOMATIC REWIND SYSTEM

When the tape ends during manual recording, playback, or fast-forward, it
automatically rewinds to the beginning (or to the 0000 counter reading if
the memory function is activated), ejects, and the VCR turns off.

DEW PROTECTION SYSTEM

Moisture condensation inside the VCR can cause tape jams or video head
damage. The dew protection system helps avoid such damage by preventing
VCR operation when it senses excess moisture.

Activation of the dew protection system is indicated by a flashing stop
indicator (DEW). You can resume normal operation only after the moisture
is gone and the indicator stops flashing.
