INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERIES
The remote control requires two AA batteries (not included) for operation.
We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-552).
1. Press down on the battery compartment cover and slide it in the
direction of the arrow to remove it.
2. Place the batteries in the compartment, as indicated by the polarity
symbols (+ and -) marked inside.
3. Replace the cover.
NOTE: If the remote control does not work or operates poorly, replace both
batteries.
CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type.
Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals
that can damage electronic circuits.
USING THE REMOTE CONTROL
Aim the remote control at the device's infrared window, and press the
desired function buttons.
SETTING THE ON-SCREEN PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE AND CLOCK
Use the remote control to select the language and set the clock.
NOTES: Set the clock accurately for proper automatic timer and quick timer
recording. We suggest you refer to a radio station or
time/temperature service for the correct time.
Your VCR has a special memory sentinel feature that protects clock
settings, tuner programming information, and timer memory setting
by providing up to 1 hour of backup power in case a power failure
occurs or if the power cord becomes unplugged. After about 1 hour
without power, the VCR loses all clock, tuner, and memory settings.
In the following example, the language is set to English and the clock is
set to 9:30 PM, December 4, 1994.
1. Press POWER to turn on the VCR.
2. Turn on your TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT
CHANNEL switch located on the back of the VCR (see "Setting the
Output Channel Switch, in Controlling VCR inputs and outputs
Faxback Doc. 19546"). Then press TV/VCR on the remote control so
VCR appears on the VCR's display. The TV screen shows a blue display
if you have not yet selected a channel.
NOTE: If you are using a TV/monitor that is connected to the VCR's
AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set it to the video mode. (See "If Your
TV has Audio/Video (A/V) Input Jacks, in Connections Faxback
Doc. #19545)
3. Press MENU on the remote control
If you have not yet selected a language, the language setting mode
automatically appears on the TV screen. Proceed to Step 4.
If the clock setting mode displays on the TV screen, skip Steps
4 and 5.
4. Select the on-screen instruction language: Press 1 for English, 2 for
Spanish, 3 for French. (Press 1 for English, for example.)
5. Press MENU on the remote control.
If you are setting the clock after plugging in the VCR, the clock-
setting mode automatically appears on the TV screen.
6. Press the remote control's number buttons to set the correct date.
(Press 1, 2, 0, 4, 9, and 4 to set December 4th, 1994.)
Precede a single-digit entry with 0. If you press a wrong number
button, move the cursor to the wrong entry using CHANNEL Down Arrow or
Up Arrow on the remote control and press the correct button.
7. Press the number buttons to set the correct hour and minute.
(Press 0, 9, 3, and 0 to set 9:30)
8. Your VCR uses a 12-hour clock, so press 1 to select AM or 2 to
select PM.
9. Review the entered information.
If it is correct, press MENU. The clocksetting mode display changes
to the normal display.
If the information is not correct, move the cursor to the wrong entry
using CHANNEL Down Arrow or Up Arrow and enter the correct informa-
tion. Press MENU to store the information.
NOTES: If you enter an invalid date or time (for example, 13:00 for the
time), the cursor returns to the incorrect setting when you press
MENU. Enter the correct date or time.
Seconds begin counting at 00 when you press MENU.
If you do not enter anything for about 60 seconds, the display
returns to normal.
If you want to exit the setup menu without changing any
settings, press CANCEL.
SELECTING TV/CATV
Depending on the type of broadcast signals you receive, you must select
the correct TV/CATV setting on the SET UP menu.
If you have cable service and use a cable box between the cable wire and
the VCR, or if you do not have cable service and want to receive up to
68 VHF/UHF channels, select TV.
If you have cable service and the cable wire is connected directly to the
VCR without a cable box, select one of the CATV settings - STD, HRC, or
IRC - depending on your type of cable service. Most cable systems use
STD, but if you are not sure what type of cable service you have, contact
your cable company.
1. Press MENU on the remote control. The menu display appears on the
TV screen.
2. Press 2 to select SET UP.
3. Press 1 to select TV/CATV.
4. Press CHANNEL Down Arrow or Up Arrow to select TV, CATV-STD, CATV-HRC,
or CATV-IRC.
5. Press 5 to exit the SET UP menu.
PROGRAMMING THE TUNER'S MEMORY
You can program the tuner's memory so when you press CHANNEL Down Arrow or
Up Arrow, the VCR's tuner scans only the active channels in your area.
1. Press MENU on the remote control. The menu display appears on the TV
screen.
2. Press 2 to select SET UP.
3. Press 2 to program the tuner's memory.
4. Press CHANNEL Down Arrow or Up Arrow. The tuner scans through the
channels (TV or CATV) and memorizes all the active channels in your
area. After scanning all the channels, the tuner stops on the lowest-
numbered active channel.
5. Press CHANNEL Down Arrow or Up Arrow to check the memory's contents.
NOTE: You can directly select channels that are not in the tuner's memory
using the remote control's number buttons.
Adding/Erasing Channels
If the tuner stores a channel that you do not want, tune to that channel
and press ADD/ERASE. ER appears on the VCR's display, ERASE appears on
the TV screen for about 3 seconds, and the unwanted channel is erased from
the tuner's memory.
If you want to program a weak channel that automatic programming missed,
enter the desired channel number using the remote control's number buttons.
Then press ADD/ERASE Ad appears on the VCR's display, ADD appears on the TV
screen for about 3 seconds, and the channel is added to the memory.
CHANNEL SELECTION
There are two ways to select a channel - manual and direct.
To manually select a channel press CHANNEL Down Arrow or Up Arrow. The
tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel.
NOTE: If you press CHANNEL Up Arrow when the tuner is at the highest
programmed channel or CHANNEL Down Arrow when the tuner is at the
lowest programmed channel, the VCR enters the audio/video mode and
the display shows AV (see "Selecting the Input Mode in Controlling
VCR inputs and outputs Faxback Doc. #19546"). Pressing either
button again tunes to the highest or lowest programmed channel.
To directly select a channel, press the remote control's number
buttons for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit channel
numbers with 0 - 01, 02, 03, and so on. For three digit channel
numbers, press 100. Then enter the second and third digits in the
channel number.
Cable Channels
Your VCR can receive up to 125 cable channels. The VCR displays the
channels as 1-125.
Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable companies
usually number them as they appear on the display.
However, cable companies often designate other cable channels with letters
or letter-number combinations.
For more information, contact your cable company. You still might have to
experiment to determine the proper cable channel designations for your
cable system.
