To eliminate complicated adjustments in most situations, this camcorder
has fully automatic features for focus, white balance, and shutter speed.
All you need to do is press the record/pause button.
The following steps outline the basic procedures for making a recording.
In many of the steps, you are directed to a specific section of this manual
that contains more detailed information. When operating the camcorder for
the first time, read all the steps and the suggested detailed information
before you actually begin.
MAKING A RECORDING
1. Load the supplied date/calendar battery into the camcorder. See
"Loading the Date/Calendar Battery" (see Faxback Doc.# 19177, Power
Sources).
2. Choose and connect a power source. See "Selecting/Using Power
Sources" (see Faxback Doc.# 19177, Power Sources).
3. Slide EJECT to the right to open the cassette compartment. Insert a
standard 8 mm cassette, and close the compartment. See
"Loading/Removing a Video Cassette" (see Faxback Doc.# 19178,
Preparation).
4. Slide VCR/OFF/CAMERA to CAMERA. See "Setting the Power Switch" on
(Faxback Doc.# 19178, Preparation).
Note: If the erase-protection tab on the cassette's spine is closed,
TAPE flashes in the viewfinder for about 5 seconds, then
disappears, and you cannot record on the tape. See "Erase
Protection" (on Faxback Doc.# 19175, Care & Maintainence).
5. Place your right hand between the hand strap and the camcorder. Then
adjust the hand strap so it fits tightly over your hand.
6. Remove the lens cap and hang it on the hand strap clip.
7. Adjust the viewfinder's position until you can look into it
comfortably. Then adjust the viewfinder focus ring behind the rubber
cup on the eyepiece for the sharpest picture. See "Preparing/Adjusting
the Viewfinder" (on Faxback Doc.# 19178, Preparation).
8. Set the data and time (see "Setting/Changing the Date and Time" (on
Faxback Doc.# 19178, Preparation).
9. Point the camcorder at the desired subject, then press W or T on the
power zoom control until you see the desired picture in the viewfinder.

10. To begin recording, press the record/pause button with your right
thumb. During recording, REC appears in the viewfinder with arrows
above it to show the direction of tape travel.
NOTES: When about 3 minutes or less remain on the tape, TAPE END
flashes in the viewfinder.
11. To pause the tape, press the record/pause button again. The tape
pauses, the arrows disappear, and II appears in the viewfinder. To
continue recording, press the record/pause button again.
NOTES: To protect the tape and conserve battery power, the
camcorder turns itself off if you pause the tape for more
than 5 minutes. To turn the camcorder back on, press the
record/pause button.

12. Slide VCR/OFF/CAMERA to OFF to turn the camcorder off.
VIEWFINDER PLAYBACK
After you make a recording, you can play it back through the viewfinder.
1. Slide VCR/OFF/CAMERA to VCR.
2. Press REW << to >> F.F to return the tape to the beginning or move to
the place where you want to begin playback. See "Digital Counter" (on
Faxback Doc. # 19180, Video Recording Features).
3. Press >> RIGHT PLAY to play back the tape.
NOTES: You cannot hear the tape's audio recording during viewfinder
playback. To hear sound, play the tape on an 8 mm VCR, or
connect the camcorder to a TV/monitor and play the tape. See
"Connecting the Camcorder to a TV" (on Faxback Doc.# 19172
VCR Features & Functions). The FOCUS and BRIGHT controls on
the side of the viewfinder have been set at the factory. It
is not necessary to adjust them under normal circumstances.
4. Press [] STOP to end playback.
5. To remove the cassette, slide EJECT to the right. Then slide
VCR/OFF/CAMERA to OFF.
NOTE: Except when you are recording, you can eject a cassette any
time power is connected to the camcorder.
