The following instructions outline the basic procedures for making a
camcorder recording.  In many of the steps, you are directed to a specific
section of this manual that contains more detailed information.

CAUTION:  Extreme changes in temperature can affect operation of the
          camcorder.  Let the camcorder adjust to the surrounding
          temperature before using it.  See "Dew Protection System," 
          Faxback Doc. # 18466.

1.  Choose and connect a power source.  See "Power Sources," Faxback Doc.
    # 18464.

2.  Slide [POWER] to the right until the POWER indicator lights.

3.  Remove the lens cap, and snap it onto the hand strap clip.

4.  Slide down [EJECT] to open the cassette compartment.

5.  Insert a standard 8mm cassette.  Then, close the compartment by
    pressing in at the point marked PUSH.

    The camcorder automatically enters the record-pause mode.  PAUSE
    flashes in the viewfinder, and the RECORD indicator flashes.

NOTE:  If CASSETTE flashes in the viewfinder, the cassette might be erase
       protected.  Or, the tape might be wound to the end.  Press [STOP]
       and then [REWIND].

6.  Set the FOCUS switch to AUTO.

7.  Set the WHITE BALANCE switch to AUTO.

8.  Press [HI-SPEED SHUTTER] so that 1000 does not appear in the
    viewfinder.

9.  Place your right hand in the hand strap, and adjust the hand strap to
    fit tightly over your hand.

    NOTE:  If the strap is too loose, the camcorder is difficult to hold
           and control.

10. Adjust the viewfinder so you can look into it comfortably.  Then,
    focus the viewfinder for the sharpest picture.

11. Point the camcorder at the desired object, and press [W] or [T] on the
    power zoom control until you see the desired picture in the viewfinder.

12. To begin recording, press [RECORD START/STOP] with your right thumb.
    REC displays in the viewfinder.

13. To temporarily pause recording, press [RECORD START/STOP] again.
    PAUSE flashes in the viewfinder.

To stop recording for an extended time, press [STOP].

To begin recording after pressing [STOP], press the red [RECORD] button
(on the top of the camcorder) to enter the record-pause mode.  Then, press
[RECORD START/STOP] to begin recording.

NOTES:  Vertical stripes might appear if you try to record with
        candlelight, fluorescent lamps, or mercury-vapor lamps.

        If you are powering the camcorder with the battery pack, it turns
        off automatically after 5 minutes in the pause mode.

        If you are powering the camcorder with standard AC power, it
        enters the stop mode after 5 minutes in the pause mode.
