ZipZaps: Customizing the Car

One of the cool features of the ZipZaps is that you can modify a ZipZaps car in order to modify its appearance or tweak its performance.. You can modify the car's appearance by changing the car body or hubcaps, and you can tweak the car's performance by changing the tires, the suspension, the gears or the motor. Additional information is available on the main ZipZaps page and our how-to pages on tweaking your car's performance and assembly of the Grand Prix Barrier Wall Kit. You can modify your vehicle using the upgrade kits listed below.

Step 1: Removing the Body

Removing the Body from the ChassisIf you are tweaking an assembled ZipZaps car, you will first need to remove the car body. It is easier to snap the front off first and then to snap off the rear part. When the body is loose from the chassis, pull the wire through the hole in the back glass of the car.

Step 2: Removing the Rear Wheels

Removing the Wheels from the ChassisThe next step is to remove the rear wheels. Pull lightly on the rear axle to unsnap it from the two slots holding it in place.

If you want to change out the tires and/or hubcaps, remove the tire and unsnap each hubcap, then go to Assembling the Wheels.

Step 3: Changing the Suspension

SuspensionThe suspension is the white bar on the front of the chassis, above the front wheels. This can be changed out at this time by simply lifting up on the installed suspension and replacing it with the new suspension.

The suspension comes in two-pin, four-pin and six-pin configurations. Changing the suspension adds tension and improves the car's performance in the turns as the number of pins increases.

Step 4: Removing the Motor Cover

Removing the Motor CoverIn order to remove the motor cover, you will need to use the small screwdriver (stored in your remote) to unscrew the small screw indicated at left.

When the screw is loose from the chassis, remove the metal motor cover plate.

Step 5: Selecting the Motor and Gear

Selecting the Motor and/or GearWith the motor cover removed, your ZipZaps car should resemble the image at left, although the color of the gear may vary.

You are now ready to tweak the car by changing out the motor and/or gear.

The ZipZaps Gear Ratio Calculator offers an interactive menu which allows you to select the motor and gear for the performance level that you want.

Step 6: Replacing the Motor and Gear

Replacing the Motor and/or GearTo change out the motor (indicated by the arrow), you will need to first remove the gear.

Once you have the motor you want installed in the chassis, put the gear you want onto the chassis in the same place as the original gear. Be sure that the gear teeth mesh with the teeth on the motor.

Put the motor cover plated back onto the chassis and screw it into place.

When the motor cover is re-attached, go to Attaching the Rear Wheels to the Chassis.
