Answer: Telephone Pickup Detection operates on a drop in telephone line voltage. When a telephone is picked up, the voltage on the line drops because the telephone now in use is using some of the original voltage. When the TAD sees that drop, it activates the feature that cuts off the outgoing message. However, if the line voltage is already low, the TAD may not see a significant enough drop to tell a telephone has been picked up. For example, if there are already several telephone devices connected to the line, particularly cordless telephones, the line voltage may be at or below the TAD's threshold, so that any subsequent drop is virtually unseen by the TAD, thus the telephone detection feature is not activated.
