 Guide to Wireless Security Systems

Door/Window Transmitters

Door/window transmitters may have a switch marked Door/Window. The difference is in how fast it transmits in case of a violation. In Window mode, the transmitter sends immediately. In Door mode, there is a delay (such as for 45 seconds) to allow you to get to the control panel and enter the code before the alarm goes off. Select the mode which best suits your need. However, unless your system has a remote control, you will need to have one transmitter in Door mode in order to enter the area without triggering the alarm.

Many door/window transmitter allow you to connect multiple sensors, so that you can use a single transmitter to secure multiple windows or doors. The sensors must be wired properly (see below), so that a violation of any sensor triggers the transmitter. The most common type of connection is a three-terminal connector -- N.C, COM and N.O. This connection system allows you to connect either normally-open sensors, normally-closed sensors, or both.

Connecting Normally-Closed Sensors

  • Remove the shorting bar from transmitter's COM and N.C. terminals, if it is attached.
  • Connect one of the sensor's screw terminals to the transmitter's N.C. screw terminal.
  • Connect the sensor's other screw terminal to the transmitter's COM screw terminal.
Note: If you connect more than one sensor to the N.C. terminal, connect them in series.
  • Replace the transmitter's cover.

Connecting Normally-Open Sensor

  • Be sure the shorting bar is attached to the transmitter's COM and N.C. terminals.
  • Connect one of the sensor's screw terminals to the transmitter's N.O. screw terminal.
  • Connect the sensor's other screw terminal to the transmitter's COM screw terminal.
  • Replace the transmitter's cover.
Note: If you connect more than one sensor to the N.O. terminal, connect them in parallel.

Connecting Both Normally-Open and Normally-Closed Sensors

  • Remove the shorting bar from the transmitter's COM and N.C. terminals, if it is attached.
  • Connect one of the screw terminals of the normally-closed sensor to the transmitter's N.C. screw terminal.
  • Connect the other screw terminal of the normally-closed sensor to the transmitter's COM screw terminal.
  • Connect one of the screw terminals of the normally open sensor to the transmitter's N.O. screw terminal.
  • Connect the other screw terminal of the normally open sensor to the transmitter's COM Screw terminal.
  • Replace the transmitter's cover.
