| An air ionizer has many advantages over an air filter system. Not only are most air ionizers less expensive than an air filter system, but they are also a lot more compact. There are more technical differences, though. Air ionizers can remove particles as small as .01 microns from the air. The best air filter systems can only remove .3 microns from the air. This is not effective because about 80% of all floating particles are smaller than .1 microns. Some of the pollutants and small particles that air ionizers can remove and air filter systems can't are: viruses, bacteria, fine dust, chemicals, gases, cigarette smoke, odors, and mold/mildew.
In most cases, all the air in a room will pass through a stationary filter. Air filter systems will usually draw the air in that is near them, but not the air on the other side of the room. They only work well if air is forced through them. An air ionizer will emit thousands of ozone and negative ion molecules into the air. This will allow the entire room to be reached. This is one reason it is much more effective to get an air ionizer.
Air filter systems also require replacement of old filters. Some of these units will have to have filters replaced two or three times a year. This increases the cost of air filter systems. Air ionizers simply require wiping the unit down and little maintenance.
In some air filter systems, a motor is used to draw additional air through the unit. These motors take a lot more electricity and raise the cost of the system even more. An air ionizer will only cost you about $5 per year in electricity costs. Not only is the motor in the air filters more expensive, but it is a lot noisier. Some can sound like a lawn mower. Air ionizers can only be heard if you are within a few feet from them and then it is only a small hissing sound.
