Distributed Control Method vs. Dedicated Control Method

There are two different methods used to control trunking:
  • The Distributed Control Method used by LTR.
  • The Dedicated Control Method used by Motorola.

Disadvantages of the Dedicated Method:

  • Throughput constraint - when a dedicated control channel is used, all access must be made through the control channel.
  • The control channel must process all calls in sequential order, as loading increases and fewer channels are available, accesses rise exponentially and mobiles must compete with each other on only one channel.

Advantages of the Distributed Method:

  • In LTR systems, access can be made on any channel that is idle. Each repeater maintains its own data stream and handles all accesses on its channel.
  • Collision avoidance is handled by the mobiles
  • Uses all channels for voice communications.
