How do I get the most out of my scanner on race day?
Prior to going to the race:
- Familiarize yourself with the radio and how to program it.
- Program the scanner with all known frequencies to save time at the race.
- Take extra batteries, making sure that all rechargeable batteries are fully charged.
- Acquire any accessories you may want or need.
Take to the race:
- All accessories
- Extra batteries
- Frequency List
- User's manual for the scanner
At the race:
- Get there early so you have time to get settled and do any last-minute programming before the race begins.
- Acquire an updated frequency list for that race if you do not already have one.
- Check your frequencies against the updated list and program in any changes.
General Listening Tips:
- Listen to the drivers in second and third rather than the lead driver. The lead driver often has the least communication with his crew, where the second and third-place drivers are discussing tactics and ideas for passing him.
- Shorter tracks generally require more consultation between driver and crew than longer tracks.
- The pit crews can also have scanners, so drivers may use code phrases when communicating with their crew to avoid telling the other drivers exactly what they're doing.
