For the purpose of broadcasting weather information, the NWS (National Weather Service) has divided the United States into regions by state, county or parish, and assigned each a six digit code for identification. Preceding each weather alert is a SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) signal. This signal contains information about the message type, the affected counties, the length of the alert and where the alert originates from. SAME signals also include FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) codes which identify regions (state, county or parish). Each code consists of six numbers, the first number indicates the county subdivision, the second and third numbers indicate the state and the last three indicate the county. Ten of these codes can be programmed and stored into your scanner so that you can specify for which counties you can be alerted. A list codes can be found on the NOAA WEATHER RADIO County by County Coverage webpage. |
