PRO-96 (200-0526) Tutorial: How To Use The Weather Band Functions

This tutorial will show you how to program and store FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) Codes and how to operate your scanner in SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) standby mode.
The FCC (Federal Communication Commission) has allocated the NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) channels for reporting weather conditions. These channels are also used by local reporting authorities.
For additional information on this product, see the links below:

Listen to the Weather (WX) Band

Enter the Weather (WX) Mode

Press WX. The scanner will scan through the weather band and will stop on the strongest transmission.

Set the SAME Standby Mode

For the purpose of broadcasting weather information, the NWS (National Weather Service) has divided the United States into regions by state, county or parish, and assigned each a six digit code for identification. Preceding each weather alert is a SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) signal. This signal contains information about the message type, the affected counties, the length of the alert and where the alert originates from. SAME signals also include FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) codes which identify regions (state, county or parish). Each code consists of six numbers, the first number indicates the county subdivision, the second and third numbers indicate the state and the last three indicate the county. Ten of these codes can be programmed and stored into your scanner so that you can specify for which counties you can be alerted. A list codes can be found on the NOAA WEATHER RADIO County by County Coverage webpage.

Step 1: Enter the Weather Mode

Press WX. Do this until you find the weather station that has the strongest signal. In the case the strongest transmission was frequency 162.55000 on channel 7.

Step 2: Access the FIPS Table

To access the FIPS code entry table, press FUNC then PGM.

Step 3: Select FIPS Code Location

Press the up and down arrow keys to select the location that you want to store the FIPS code.

Step 4: Enter and Store the FIPS Code

Press the number keys to enter the FIPS code. The code for Tarrant County, Texas is 048439. To store the code, press ENTER.

Note: If you want to label the code, press TEXT and enter the label information.

Step 5: Lock Out/Enable FIPS

Press L/OUT to lock out selected stored FIPS codes. Press L/OUT again to enable them.

Step 6: Exit FIPS Table

To exit the FIPS code entry table, press WX.

Step 7: Enter/Exit the SAME Standby Mode

To enter the SAME standby mode press FUNC and then WX. Press these two buttons again to exit. While in SAME standby mode the scanner monitors the selected weather station for alerts with FIPS codes that match those that have been stored in the FIPS code table.
