RadioShack's On-line Battery Guidebook

Specific Battery Issues: Charging Cordless Telephone Batteries

It is an accepted rule that if a battery-powered device is designed to automatically recharge an installed Ni-Cd battery, NiMH batteries can not be used in the device, as the charge cycle could cause the battery to leak, overheat, expand and/or burst. However, every rule has an exception.

The exception to this rule occurs when you are charging cordless telephone batteries inside the handset. Because the charge rate on cordless telephones is extremely low, the built-in charger can safely recharge either Ni-Cd or NiMH batteries. Cordless telephones are the only device for which we recommend substituting NiMH for Ni-Cd.
