There are three basic elements you will need to create your Home Theater System: a Source, a Decoder and Speakers.
- Source: You will need is one or more program sources equipped with either a Dolby* Digital output (such as a DVD player, digital television receiver, digital satellite and digital cable) or Dolby Surround output (regular analog stereo sources such as a TV receiver, VHS deck, satellite receiver, or cable box).
- Decoder: You will need an A/V (Audio/Video) receiver or other device that incorporates a 5.1-channel Dolby Digital decoder (for Dolby Digital soundtracks) and/or a Dolby surround Pro Logic* or Pro Logic II* decoder (for analog Dolby Surround soundtracks).
- Speakers: You will need a minimum of five speakers and five amplifier channels from the deocder to hear Dolby Digital and Dolby Surround soundtracks. The minimum five speakers are Left Front, Right Front, Center, Left Rear and Right Rear. Depending on your amplifier, you can also use a sixth speaker (a subwoofer).
The center channel speaker is the main speaker used for voices. The rear speakers handle special effects and the front speakers play the main music. The subwoofer adds low-frequency effects, such as explosions. If you decide to add a subwoofer, you will find that you feel rather than hear the effect. |
